Insurance - Who have I missed who's worth a Call ?

Oh deep Joy.

I have been insured through snowball for years, and over that time the quality of the service has got worse and worse, but I have stuck with them due to the PITA it is to get re-insured. Now they are selling themselves / being bought out / some other nonsense, and I just decided that maybe I should look about elsewhere.

I have always been very hot on making sure all the mods are known, and want to be properly covered, so far the calls have only mainly wound me up as the idiots on the end of the phone have no idea at all, or right at the end after 20 mins say "Oh my god a front rollcage is completely uninsurable"

Muppets

So, Some are better than others, some are truly hopless, but so far these are the companies I have rung (with mixed results)

Sureterm Direct

Adrian Flux

Glynwood

Footman James

Lancaster Insurance

Peter Best

Heritage Insurance

Graham Sykes

Firebond ...........A Classic Call - Full Page advert on the back of a Magazine but are "Closing Down Sir" ? WTF

Who have I missed / who is worth a call ?

Co Name and Phone number would be loverley ta muchly :)

Funnily enough house stuff done through them, but bear in mind that the 90 is "erm just a Tad" modified" it will need a specialist insurer.

Spoke to A Plan he actaully said "We would only waste your time nige :)" which I actaully liked for the honesty !

im amazed firebond said they were closing down - they have been bought by AON about 2-3 months ago!

youve got all the ones i have spoken to (if you add nfu - which is selling Norwich Union products IIRC) in the past.

Might be worth trying firebond again - as they were always the cheapest for me - you may find you had a disgruntled employee who was made redundant this morning ! - Might be worth asking if they have an alternative number for you to call - afterall - I am sure somebody will be writing to all existing policyholders at renewals time - so why wouldnt they want new business !!

Just did a search on the web and found this:- its from 2006 but may be worth anther call:

"Highway Insurance are specialist Land Rover insurers, but you will have to ring a broker who knows about them. I went through SureTerm direct, a few others on this forum have gone through other brokers and we've all ended up with the same policy.

£138 plus brokerage fees, recovery etc. Fully Comprehensive insurance, 6000 mile limit, full cover for greenlaning, shows, exhibitions etc, and this is on a modified 90 with Range Rover running gear"

Don't waste the cost of a call with NFU, they will not insure modified vehicles.

At least, not if you're honest about the mods ;)

i am honest to the NFU about all my mods and they have taken them all and insured both my trucks (£480) but have been with them 10 years, i never mention modified just list the additions with a description of what it does. (................... ie sits in the garage broken and never goes out.............)

I take it that you have a limited milage policy. less than 5m a month :P . So really your insurance is quite expensive

if thats 5mins of use a month then thats about right, if its 5miles then no, theres no way it could go that far!

I was being kind. I meant 5 miles. That'll teach me to be generous.

Should find out tomorow which day over the weekend I'll be down. Have to visit you, Dave and Tony to pick up bits

FYI

1999 T Defender 110, 9 Seater, J Fearn Chip upgrade and intercooler - no other mods, with wife on with provisional license  , insured for 30k miles, insured with NFU for £450. Halifax wanted £1500 to cover.

Found their level of service very good.

im with NFU too. no complaints. everything declared. they dont sell norwich union products at all either. plus theyre a mutual so any profit they make has to go back to the members, in lower premiums (policy holders. a small part of your first premium makes you an NFU member (think it was about 20-30 quid))

I've got everything insured with the NFU. I think it helps if they either have all your business (house, vehicles etc) or if you can get referred to them by someone who does a lot with them - they seem to be expensive if you just ring up out of the blue for a price (they gave my sister a very good price - the cheapest we could find - on a Clio 1 week after she passed her test, but only when I rang and pointed out the family connection!).

I stand corrected then !! I just thought I remembered reading some time ago that they 'backed their car insurance business off' - and kept everything else in house...

Apologies for misleading comment!

NFU need some coaxing (and it helps to speak to the right office too) for increased power engines. Never had any problems with Defender mods though. I know that they are not keen on bobtails and stuff. The service is second to none IMHO.

They paid out promptly, fully and without fuss on SimonR's highly modded 90.

I've just renewed with NFU (was with Adrian Flux). I needed business use only on and as and when basis, as my employer may sometimes send me elsewhere for a meeting or training. AF wanted an extra £40 or so for the year. NFU were happy to cover on an ad hoc basis for next to nothing. And they were about £70 cheaper. All mods declared - the only thing the underwriters weren't too happy about were the bigger tyres, but everything esle was ok. I spoke to their call centre in Glasgow and the guy was a Land Rover owner and knew exactly what I was talking about (unlike AF, who incidently lost two e-mails updating them with details of new modifications halfway through the term).

NFU even managed to sell me home contents insurance... ;)

Depend s who your loacl office is! Ours is very very good, My 130 is seriously modded for work and the NFU haven't batted an eye lid. Also have a mate that has a seriously modded 110 with lots of engine tweaks and is seriously well equiped, and again the NFU were more than happy infact there are 8 of us insured with our local office.

I had to claim when I wrote the 90 off, I called the claim line minutues after the accident they took my details and that was it, no more hassle, I went off to hospital and they sorted everything, I came out of casualty 4 hrs later to 5 messaages from the NFU updating me on the recovery process and where they were taking my motor. The engineer had inspected it in two days, rang me with his fiqure and told me I had 24 hrs to remove any mods I'd fitted that were salvageable. Cheque arrived within 2 weeks. Top Notch service!

I'm with NFU have been for 11years in shore both my cars with them. K reg disco and F reg 90 i pay less than 500quid and thay cover any trailer that im towing and depending on police can have the load covered. thay also cover me for damage that i do on or around the farm, (not that i clam for them just get the hammer out).

as long as you honest you'll have no problems with them. eg:mods
