Guest noggy

im also 17, insurance with NFU on a E reg 90 with a 200tdi isnt too bad

400 quid after your first year of driving, the first year fully comp is 1400, lucky im 18 in 9 days!

i was on my dads insureance for the first year, which has enabled me to build my NCB and not be sent to the cleaners!

we had a god deal from NFU as well for me and my family including a 17 yr old on a provisional

and my 23yr old son also saved quite a bit when he renewed his L200 with NFU

so far we have had an excellent service from them

BUT, welcome to the forum and nice to see another sensible youngster who wont be ranting up and down our streets with a baseball cap on the wrong way and music for the hard of hearing!! By the way, try getting some quotes for different land rovers, I seem to recall that series land rovers are very low insurance groups. As for clubs local to you, I think I'll leave that for someone from Derby.

im not sure what incurnce group it is though..

but before i got my 90 a had a series 3 88" deisel.. as a new driver at 17 the incurnce cost was about the same as it is now maybe abit higher.. and that was with NFU.

Whereabouts in Derby are you from? If the LR's not modified, I got good service from the NFU in Ashbourne - decent price and you can go in and stroke their spaniel(!) if you have any issues. They got silly when I started bolting too much stuff to my Ninety though, which I can understand.

Insurance when you're younger is a big issue but shopping around really can help. In terms of which models to choose, well series Land Rovers are very cheap - a good friend (24) has just renewed the insurance on his SIIa and it was £120 pa fully comp. I can't remember who that was with, though.

When my 90 (started out as a 300 tdi CSW but hugely modified in the end) was on the road I used NFU who were OK and didn't complain about the mods. The price wasn't terrible but it's so long since I've needed to insure it I can't remember exactly what it cost! One broker worth speaking to is Noel Dazely - they specialise in young drivers and performance cars. I use them for my modified Lotus Elise and the price was pretty amazing!

its a night mare! ive got a good broker so long as you dont want to insure you vehicle for big money. i tried to buy a 90 with loads of modes etc and declare them all and insure the vehicle for 8k, but this seems a huge problem, no insurance company want you to go off roading in a car worth 8 k and they wont insure it third part f+t!

if you want cheap insurance, buy a series 3 or an early 90, insure it for no more than 2k and have a limited milage policy.

My brokers are frank pickles, they do kit car insurance (ideal for ibexs) and off road insurance for your average play toy 90. For 12 months it cost me 400 quid with any mods so long as the vehicles value is less than 5k and there a limited milage. im 22 which i think isnt bad considering.

As has come up several times recently (since middle of last year) different NFU brokers are like a totally different company - you will get totally different answers from one to the next. I don't know why this is, but familiarity with the type of vehicle is likely to be a part of it.

So: Try ringing different brokers, and search on here for some recommended ones (mine is Price and Imber in Chippenham). Also, I found that once I left home, so there was no longer family business at the address, they would not insure me as I was under 25 at the time.

They are good for modified vehicles - make sure they list them all on the policy. There is no charge for admin - adding mods/temp vehicles/temp drivers, much better than some others.

Your policy will include basic recovery, but is cheaply upgradeable - check what you get for your money though, you may do better somewhere else.

They haven't been so good at managing my claim, but that is the fault of their sub-contracted loss assessing engineers and some thieving gits at the recovery yard :-(

The postcode that the vehicle is insured at will have a massive effect on the quotation. One place can be up to a grand more expensive to insure the same vehicle as it is at another location, all because of the statistical risk on the given postcode.

City outskirts and such will pay some of the highest premiums, while out in the middle of nowhere will be some of the lowest.

As for what motors work out the cheapest, utility models (i.e. Series, 90/110 etc) come out as the least expensive. Discoveries and Range Rovers come out as the most expensive.

Somone else from Derby!

Hello :)

As others have said, phone around and beware the postcode lottery! I insured my first land rover at 17, a 2.25 Series 3, but that was 10 years ago and in Northumberland.

Which part of Derby are you from?
