reb78
Zoom in between the valves. Is this cracked? see next post for a closer image.
reb78
The seller sent me these, but think i'll leave it unless advice on here says otherwise.
western
could just be a deep score, only way to tell if it's a crack is to have it checked with the correct materials.
reb78
Seems to be the same between three out of the four valve pairs though. Funny to get three deep scores there i would have thought. Its a 200tdi head - didnt mention that above, not that it changes anything.
Turbocharger
Yep, I'd buy that, at £400 a tonne or less. Classic thermal stress cracks. They may not go back to the coolant jacket (yet) but it's a ball of a job to do, and then find you need to do again.

m&mv80
my old discovery head looked the same as that when i changed the head gasket (it was blowing at the back like they do), had no choice but to fit it back on at the time as needed to use it, my thoughts were that it wasnt causing a problem before i took it off so should be ok to put it back on again, i drove it for another year without fail and then i sold it but i believe it still driving now, also in some of the workshop manuals ive seen (not landrover 200tdi) it shows that certain cracks in those areas are ok, depends on there direction and size if i recall corectly, why was the head removed from its origional eng? if you had no other option it would be worth a try but i woulnt pay hardly anything for it or you could have it tested but to be honest if your able to your prob better off waiting and getting a good one
reb78
Beleive the engine was scrapped for parts as the big ends had gone on it. Seller bought it like that and has never used it. It includes the injectors and glow plugs and he wants £55 for it - might be worth it just for the injectors i suppose, but if the overwhelming feeling was that the head was no good i was going to just get him to post the injectors. I'm not in a rush, i was really only after the injectors to have them as spares and I was just interested in everyones opinions on the state of the head. ejparrott
I personnaly wouldnt buy the head, having had an engine with a cracked head, nor would i pay £55 for the injectors from the same engine - thats just my view.
Phil Hancock
It looks cracked to me as well.
FLR100
It looks cracked to me as well. If the valve seats are ok then i don't see the problem with that head, i have seen many with fatigue cracks like that and it certainley does not render a head scrap, the injectors are easily worth £55 for 4, that's my opinion anyway
Turbocharger
Sorry, I wasn't very clear. I was suggesting that it is scrap - mine looked like that and was having issues with coolant so I changed it. It might be fine, but it's a lot of labour to find out that it's not... white90
No I would not buy this or take it as a gift.
ciderman
From past experiences recon/rewelded heads are short lived in their life span , once the metals are fatigued and failed it kind of tells you that its at the end of its useful life . matt bristol
I could supply you with a complete engine for not a lot more than that
