pigster
west harptree - its a rocky place, with plenty of interesting slopes (as in fairly short in places but really steep) make sure you have good winches front and rear, you will need them. If it rains your doomed, its all clay and rock, being all in a valley/gulley you will be constantly winching about the place - take a anchor as well. I was there last year doing the scorpy challenge, this year I can not do this site, but I will be at the others. the kit your talking about I think is from Ashcroft.. but don't quote me on that. hello to everyone who is going to round 3 has anyone been before and is it a good site,as good as coney farm also has anyone any advice on crown wheels as i was trialing last weekend and ripped the teeth of the rear one not a good repair on a trailer at 6am sunday morn in horizontal rain someone told me you could get some kit that goes in the diff that stops the crown wheel from moving sideways anyone know were to buy from. cheers john
Hybrid_From_Hell
someone told me you could get some kit that goes in the diff that stops the crown wheel from moving sideways anyone know were to buy from. cheers john Its diff "Pegging", they have to be fitted which entails welding a lump of steel to a casting, specialist stuff... Ashcrofts are the people, and a beautifual job they have done on both of mine too, but it is NOT cheap, and the welding is real specialist stuff, the subby they use makes a beautifull job of it !.. the plate has 2 adjustable allen bolt heads tapped itnto it, and then on the inside a brass slipper plate which is set close to the crownwheel, thus if the crownwheel tries to flex and move away from the pinion (which is then followed by Bang mutter mutter grumble) then this pad stops it. There are a whole load of things that are good off road and make a difference, this is down the list of things maybe (ie tyres ARBs HD Shafts etc etc etc), but they are good, just brace yourself for the bill ! Nige The man beat me to it. Ashcrofts are the people to go to, they do a lovely job. I got my diffs pegged by them recently and the quality is superb but you will end up a tad lighter in the wallet department. Unless you're running big power/torque (upwards of 300 lbft), enjoy using the load pedal and have upgraded everything else in the drivetrain then I wouldn't bother pegging. In most cases crownwheel failier is due to wear, poor setup or lubrication issues. If you do go this route its realistically going to cost you £1k a diff by the time you've got new rings and pinions (3.54s), bearings, housings, diff centres (ARB) and build up charge. Not cheap but you get what you pay for....

pigster
thats alright I suppose - - it bears blowing up the ARB = = which I have just done.. ruddy thing. and not a V8 in sight.. 200tdi - and an Arb with deathwish/suicide wish. the ruddy thing unbolted itself (all 6 casing bolts) and wiz pop clatter - -it still drove home though. £500 would see Ashcrofts remove ARB etc and reinstall into 2x new Pegged Casings, new bearings etc total for both ...........not each Nige

IIRC the welding rods cost an absolute fortune too. P.S. Its unusual to hear a bad word about Ashcrofts; I've dealt with them regularly and I can only praise them for their quality and service. This site finally convinced me that a full external cage was a good idea after a few brown trouser moments last year. Crown Differentials Crown Diffs are also pegging diffs now. I've not had this pegging done personally, but I can recommend the quality of the rebuild they did for me.
