Transfer ratio's

So a subject I'm useless at...

On the Disco i've fitted 265/75/16's with the standard transfer box which IIRC is a 1.2:1

but its lost all its omphhh with the Pikey van on the back....would a 1.4:1 improve it ?????

I think the one I have must be 1.4. Out of a 2.5 petrol,, unfortunantly it hasnt got the ratio on the side of it. Anybody know how to tell from the serial number.

Yep, standard TDi goes well without the pikey on !, but just means I have to keep dropping gears with the van on the back and zero....Omppphhhh on the hills and acceleration is poor...take van off its fine... :blink:

not sure why it works that way ?....I just don't understand gears.....

Now if Mark could put the results of his gearing doda up for both ratio's it would be superb....as I don't have Exel.. :huh:

Just checked the datasheet

1.2 box - 2500 rpm = 70.8 mph

1.4 box - 2500 rpm = 61.2 mph

1.6 box - 2500 rpm = 51.9 mph

or

1.2 box - 70 mph = 2500 rpm

1.4 box - 70 mph = 2875 rpm

1.6 box - 70 mph = 3400 rpm

Edited, hate gearing as much as you Les :lol:

In the mean time........ just tell me what I need to tow 1600 Kg with 265/75/16's at a decent speed, with resonable acceleration and keeping the revs down......

I'm going to tow our Van to Norfolk this summer with the Defender on 255/85s

it weighs 21CWT apparently

In the mean time........ just tell me what I need to tow 1600 Kg with 265/75/16's at a decent speed, with resonable acceleration and keeping the revs down......

1.2 is what you have, at 70mph you get low revs and noise but no acceleration

1.4 is lower geared so at 70mph you have slightly higher revs, but this gives better acceleration

1.6 is even lower geared so at 70mph your ears will be hurting from the screaming engine but it'll accelerate very well (until you hit the rev limiter, at about 80mph)

I'd go for a 1.4 box as this will cancel out the larger tyres (give or take a bit) so it will feel similar to a Disco running normal sized tyres which tows well.

1.6 boxes were standard in 2.5 petrol and N/A diesel 110's only, if its from a 90 it's probably a 1.4.

If Dave's came from a 90, it 'should' be a 1.4. Though of course it could have been changed at some point.

1.66 transfers were generally only fitted to civvy 2.25, 2.5 petrol and n/a diesel 110s. All 4 cylinder 90s and 2.5 turbo diesel and Tdi 110s had 1.4 transfers.

There is always the odd anomally though!

Here you go Les a comparison of your disco with 1.222 and 1.41 transfer boxes.....

Remember these speeds will be actual speeds, not speedo speeds, assuming the tyre rolling diameter is acurate enough.

A few people fit the 1.2 ratio box to defenders to get the gearing that you have currently for more relaxed cruising at the expense of acceleration and towing umph. Some people seem to like the higher gearing, some don't, I think it depends on driving style / preference and the power/torque of the engine, not all TDI's are equal. You are obviously finding issues with it, so I'd go for the 1.4 box if I was you, that will give you standard 110 gearing with those tyres, but keep the old 1.2 box in case you don't like the 1.4 you can easily swap back.

I'd say stick with what you've got.

If 5th gear is beyond what you want then use 4th; the number on the gearstick doesn't matter, it's the ratio that does. If you swap boxes, your new 5th will be halfway between 4th and 5th currently - will 'half a gear' help?

I use a 1.2 in my Defender, because it was too revvy at speed. I'd say a 1.4 box is the solution if you're having trouble with 1st gear, not 5th.

MyTD 90 used to tow this pikey van no problems, even with it's weak ~80HP engine, right up to the legal limit on the A303, A34 and M4. Obviously it slowed on the hills, but it's a bloody big van!

50mph was fine cruising. 60mph was possible but a bit worrying as I knew if it got a bit waggy you were unlikely to "save" it. Getting sucked in to overtaking lorries was a bit frightening too.

When I sold it some of the interested buyers seriously thought they could tow it with a Ford Escort/Vauxhall cavalier etc.

I currently have a 17ft 6berth single axle and the 90 will do 60 with that no probs.

This however has a noseweight of over 350kg and estimated over 3000kg weight.

Now, obviously, it's entirely illegal to tow it on the road with a Land Rover so I couldn't say how well it went might go ;) .

I can say however that when it was hooked to a Jeep wrangler that was going to tow it the bumpstops were compressed!

Futher on from this....it may not be just a gearing issue,

Used the pikey van the last weekend long hill, getting near the top.....and she starts slowing down....Oh Fupp :o

Eases of the smokey pedal and drop a gear and nurse it to the flat section, did'nt fancy a hill start :blink:

anyway she's huffing and pufffing, won't rev etc, thinks no fuel, get out the 10mm spanner open the bleed screw on the filter all air and no fuel 20 seconds'ish later it's pumping a bit of fuel and air bleed it all through and off we go no problems.

Take it down to the tyre place where the company gets all our tyres from and stick it on the smoke tester.....

allowed 3.9 IIRC

revs the dobry's off it......whinces :unsure:

and it manages.........0.7......do you think it might be a tad underfuel'd ?

so with the van off its fine, with the van its on its as flat as a Witches T*t (No Reference to Mand :lol: ) :ph34r:

Checked the boost and it just hits 0.7 Bar

think I need to do a bit of tweeking (the fueling not the Witches t*t) :D
