Tyre choice: General SAGs?

What's the collective view on General SAGs ?? My 90 needs some new 750/16 rubber and the local tyre-place offered me "Security" brand ones [which I gather are Chinese] at a suspiciously-low price, or General SAGs.

My usage is predominantly road-biased - which makes me suspicious of the "security" ones - will they handle regular 75-80MPH-for-3-hours motorway usage?

Occasional off-road capability is needed though - to drag a 3-ton flatbed trailer off muddy showgrounds, yank out treestumps, and haul a 2.5-ton boxtrailer through my forests when harvesting firelogs.

It seems that the Avon Rangemaster - my traditional choice - has supply problems.

I cannot imagine that SAGs are speed rated for that sort of speed, and if they are they will be horribly loud, dreadful in the wet and wear out in no time - but good in mud while they last. In your position I would look for the slightly wider but similar diameter BFG 235/85 MT which will cost twice as much but be properly speed rated, work better under all conditions other than perhaps extreme mud, give a better ride quality, be much quieter and last three (at a guess) times longer. If you insist on a 750, look for a Michelin XZL or something? You need to check the speed rating of the tyre is correct, that is worth a £10,000 fine with loss of license if you get cought - more if you cause an accident, including free accommodation at her Majesty's pleasure.

Edited to add: Having checked, SAGs are speed rated 'N' - to 88mph! Quite a surprise.

I've got SAG's on my 90 and they've been on there a few years now-4 i think, I've always found them to be excellent in the mud, and good for a lots of uses, BUT as GBMUD says they're bloody loud(anything over 40 mph and you'll know about it-then again so will anyone within half a mile too lol) they make a loud whirring noise something similar to the old Xtra-grips from Goodyear from the old series 3's that the military used to have issued, and If you're going to use them onroad for the main use you have to be careful in the wet too, If you can deal with the cough "uniqueness" cough then they'll last a few years, Mine are tubed tyres by the way I'm unsure wether you can get tubeless tyres

one must not get confused here. The general SAG is like the old mudplugga, if my memory serves me correctly, great for trialing or farm work, BUT the general SAG RADIAL is a different animal altoghether. i was after some for my 110, but managed to get some new Avon rangemasters at 1/3 price. The SAG radial are for sale on Paddocks website, and are a comparable price to the Avon'. and just as the avons were factory fitment in the uk, these tough as ol' boots SAG radials, were factory fitment to the South |African market. they are not all that aggresive but really tough , 'apparantly'.

i have the SAG radials and when i deflate, for the sand, they tend to wear in a really odd way. someone then told me they are not designed for coils spring landies, work better on a land cruiser pick-up, which has leaf springs at the rear. Don't know what difference it makes, but i can believe it since cruiser owners like them.

i would avoid them if i were you.

anything else but SAG.

Interesting comments & observations...

I don't honestly want to change from 750-16 to radials, because all my 'heavy fleet' uses 750-16 and this standardisation means I can freely interchange LR wheels with trailer-wheels. Having had spare-wheels stolen from trailers in the past, these days I don't allow a spare on any of the trailers but use the one off the LR if needed. Switching to radials on the LR would just complicate issues.

[what are the legal implications of running radials on one axle of a twin-axle trailer and crossplies on the other? Or a single-axle trailer with one radial and one crossply? Is it influenced by what the towcar is running? And how do modern euroboxes get away with the "Space-saver" spares?]

My acquaintances in South Africa seem to like the General SAGs - at one time they were OEM fit on Defenders over there. And as to noisiness - well, I'm quite used to the pleasant whine of Avon Rangemasters and Goodyear G90s; there are occasions when a good dose of tyre-noise is rather useful to tell you what's underfoot.

A couple of SAGs are arriving at the weekend. Will report back in due course. If they're useless they can always go on the trailer.

We bought one batch of the Security 7.50x16 tyres when the old crossply SAGs went out of production, and they were dreadful even at our low road speeds here! (40mph)

Stuka-like noise, they were square and absolutely horrible in every way - noise, balance, grip, appearance .... wouldn't use a set if you gave them to me.

Having said that I wouldn't touch crossply SAGs for predominantly on road use either. The radial versions are better but I thought still fairly mediocre, though my experience with the radials is pretty limited. The crossply was a muddy field tyre for a farmer's working LR.

I do find it genuinely puzzling why so many on the forums (not just this one!!) feel that General SAG's are close to death-traps.

Bear in mind they come in cross ply...

...or radials...

I've run the cross ply version for close to 10 years, in all weathers, at all times of the year, and never, ever had a problem with them. I also did 460 miles in one day on them, and and over the years have never ended up in any ditches.

OK, they are a little noisy, but I don't notice it with the engine screaming, the gearbox howling, the canvas flapping, the bodywork rattling. They may also not have the lifespan of Michelin XZY's. They might be a bit wayward on wet, greasy roads, but I have NEVER, EVER had the back end let go without me provoking it. On snowy roads it is great fun in 2wd, but the combination of short wheelbase and achingly slow steering box make it tricky to balance at 30 degrees for any length of time. I've also towed with it, and never ever had any problems.

But off-road, the story changes... they are AWESOME. I've never once been bogged, and I've done a few black runs at various Pay 'n Play sites (OK, I've stopped a few times, but only 'cos I've drowned my petrol 2 1/4).

Some SAG porn for you (few) SAG lovers out there...

I love my SAG crossplies, and would recommend them to anyone running a Series vehicle. In fact, my current ones are running low, and if they were still available, I'd stump up some cash for another set.

Anyone feeling the love yet?? I'll get my coat.....

Just my views,

Effortless.

I agree - they are a perfectly appropriate tyre for a Series vehicle. However, without meaning to be nasty, expectations of noise, vibration, braking, handling and steering feel has moved on since the 1970s when manual steering and drum brakes were the norm, and on a modern vehicle they feel out of place and don't inspire confidence. Still damn good off road though - I always said that it was a shame they didn't do other, wider, sizes or I'd have had a set.
