jad
Right when the topic has fallen off the 1st page its definitely time for an update! Still been working on the bulkhead. Fair Number of fiddly repairs going on. Bad stuff cut out. And new put in. Also started work on the passenger side foot well as there currently isnt one..... It still needs work but its getting there. Thats all for the moment. Gonna be another few weeks before I get any more work done but then I have the WHOLE of December to work on it so will hopefully make some good progress and see it running..... Cheers Jad
Adam001
Bring on the time off then!!
jad
Right some more bits have happened. Had to space the steering box off the chassis so that it clears the power steering pump pulley.... Also cut the front panel to fit around it. Fitted a stiffener plate in the drivers footwell, Bulkhead is almost done, Lip for the gearbox tunnel is about the latest addition I think. Also started building the front end up more. I removed all the plates off the front panel as they interfered with the radiator. More will be added later on to make sure the airflow goes through the rad rather than around it! Also modified the series bulkhead support bracket to allow the defender steering column to bolt on. More soon Jad
Soren Frimodt
Looking good as usual, excited to see how this thing goes when it's all done, my prediction is like an uncontrollable leafsprung rocket ship (which is pretty cool)
jad
Cheer soren. Im hoping it wont be too bad..... Hopefully it being a barge with help and the borg warner tbox. I will be running it on all terrains or more road biased tyres but nothing too large. Would be interesting to find out how Nige's 90 handles his monster engine. Then race him Jad
ejparrott
A leaf sprung rocket ship....now i'm hooked! Looked great mate, curious about the strengthening plate on the footwell though, what was your reason for that?
jad
A leaf sprung rocket ship....now i'm hooked! Looked great mate, curious about the strengthening plate on the footwell though, what was your reason for that? The footwells in defender and series have extra panels to stiffen the footwells around the brake and clutch pedals. The panel we have put in may be slightly bigger than standard..... but I would prefer to be overkill than underkill before its galvanised and then decide I want to change it after Jad
jad
Couple more bits progressing today. My dad started making some chassis to seatbox, seatbelt brackets today. Not quite finished yet. And I have been making a cowling for between the front panel and radiator. Also not finished. Its been pretty fiddly as the front panel is not straight and there is nothing to hold the radiator upright as the front panel will eventually do that. Also going to get the front panel shot blasted before welding the cowling to it which means I was having to use every clamp we have to hold the bits in place! No more work on it till Monday now as I'm going to get p*ssed in Leeds for a mates birthday and then the same the next 2 weekends..... Cheers Jad
ejparrott
Thats some birthday party! Like what you're doing with the front panel, giving me ideas for my project 109....
discomikey
thats an extremely smart way of mounting the rad. wish i had the time to build mine to that level of detail when i rebuilt it!
mickeyw
That's some nice work the rad panel. I did a similar mod to move the rad forward on my 88" with Rover V8. Wish I'd taken photos of all that.
jad
Right.... Time for a very hacked off update! Gave some parts to "Stotfold Engineers" based in Biggleswade on Tuesday 11th for shot blasting. Told them I was going to have it galvanised and they said it would be between 80 and 120 so I was obviously expecting the thick end of that.... Was told it should be ready in a week and they will call. A Week later no phone call, so called them. They said it would be ready for collection today at 2 maybe 3. Come half 3 today no phone call so I went down there. The guy seemed ever so pleased with himself, "yes its ready, in the back on my van, its been shot blasted and painted in red oxide so you can still do any welding....." Pardon? I didnt even get as far as his van! Honestly FFS what kind of retarded incompetent set up is this! Anyway needless to say they are blasting it again and I am paying them less than they wanted as I am certainly not paying for the paint and there time to paint it in the first place! I also cant help thinking that its going to have shed loads of paint still on it when it comes back or a nice big hole blasted in it where it was "rusty". Anyway my advice avoid this place at allllll costs! I may have broken some rules naming and shaming them, but with all the posts flaming britpart I find it hard to imagine I have. So if its needs modifying mods please go ahead.... Jad

jad
Bit of an update. The bulkhead is back! Dad picked it up today. It doesnt look like too bad a job. They found a few rust holes which need to be repaired and there is still what looks like a light misting of red oxide paint. But really im just glad to have it back! Jad
CwazyWabbit
The misting will probably disappear when it gets acid dunked won't it?
jad
My dad talked to a galvanisers and they said that paint is their worst nightmare. While the acid will eat through rust it wont take off paint! I have only seen the pics here. Look like the top is the worst but im sure i can take it off easily enough. Boris113
Fantastic build, the quality of your fabrication is great - I especially like the front panel!
jad
Thanks Borris. Bit more of an update. Got the bits back from the galvanisers looking all pretty and shiny Havent shown this bit before. It mounts just infront of the fuel tank on the mounts that hold the strap that runs under the axle. It will hold the fuel filter and pump. I was originally going to mount the fuel filter on the bulkhead but decided it was probably better to have it before the fuel pump. Need to buy some wings and all the gaskets and other rubbish you need when assembling a bulkhead now but will hopefully make some fairly quick progress soon! discomikey
can i ask who took all that in. a lot of galvanisers say they wont do small bits! i need a full set of series cappings doing!
jad
This was done by East Anglian Galvanising Ltd http://www.wedge-galv.co.uk/East-Anglian_Galvanizing.aspx I am very happy with it. Only cost £60 which I thought was very reasonable. The bulkhead doesn't look like it has warped at all and it looks like a pretty clean finish.
