Rebuilding 2.5TD

Recommended Posts

Small question? When I accelerate there is some black cloud coming out of the exhaust. I know that i can reduce them by turning the pump. But wich way should i turn it. Should i turn the top of the pump towards the engine or the other way?

Thanks

Hi Tukko,

Its good to see things have moved along for you, first off I would advise you NOT to alter your fueling until the engine is well run in and you are happy with eveything (including your oil pressure).

Fitting your intercooler will be absolutely fine however.

Always start from a good solid reliable "baseline" (and no, not Grandmaster Flash!) and only make changes on one thing at a time.

That way you can return back to the "known" entiity easily without creating a lot of unknowns and confusion.

Personally I would recommend running your engine in for 1,000 miles and give it an oil change (I use Millers) before carrying out any further tweaks.

Get to the point you are comfortable nothing is going to go pop or overheat (and from experience thats usually after that first 1,000 miles!) and change one thing at a time at your leisure.

For the oil pressure what type of oil and viscosity are you using? I was advised a few years ago not to use modern synthetic oils on my 200Tdi as the older more agriculture engines benefit from a gloopier oil.

Looking forward to seeing the intercooler fitted and keep up the feedback!

All the best.

G

Hello all,

Thanks for all the advice. Last week i ordered a new oil pump. It's from Britpart but a OEM class. Fingers crossed.

Yesterday i installed the new pump. I did it on the drive way because i've holiday and can't use the garage now at work. But it all worked out. Kept everything clean and the Mrs happy as well.

Give the oil pan a rinse and got rid of the paper oil seal. The paper was after tree weeks become completely hard. It couldn't be bent anymore it just cracked. So i used silicon sealant instead. Very strange

Put everything back in place in started the engine. As soon it started you could hear the difference. It sounded more solid and more quiet. Of to the freeway and when the engine was warm, i took an exit and stopped. No red light on at idle speed. YES!!!!!!! ^_^ Also on the freeway the engine sounds more solid runs more quiet. I'm a happy man.

Hello all, somebody is offering me à defender 300tdi radiator, intercooler and oil cooler in one frame. Is there any adjusting nessecery to mount this frame or is it à straight fit? I've concerns about the lower brackets on the chassis.

Can i use the oilcooler too?

This package is considerably wider than the original rad, therefore considerable trimming is required to get it to fit. But doable. ;)

erm, this is going in a td 110 yeah?

if so it will fit fine. the gap between the inner wings at the front is the same between the td, nad, v8 and tdi versions. When we fitted a tdi engine, rad+intercooler assembly to a friends 110td - all we had to do was trim the bottom mounting points down about 30mm and make some adjustments to the top mounts so the pins lined up correctly to hold it all in place.

Yep - as above, it will fit width wise fine, the height may need some simple adjustments though. Obviously there might be some adjustments required for the hose positions too. The oil cooler should be fine to connect up - only thing i would check with the folks on here are whether the threads for the coupling to the rad are likely to be compatible between the TD engine and the 300tdi rad.

Thanks for the response! The engine is fitted in a 90. So that's all the same. For the oilcooler i've seen some extended(longer) hoses. They were advertised for 30 pounds or something like that. For the intercooler i'll have to find out what i need.(ideas are welcome).

Is the turbo outlet connected to the top of the intercooler and the bottem of the intercooler to the inlet manifold?

Well if you aren't changing engine position, you're pipes will be long enough. So should be a doddle.

You mean the oil pipes?

Do you have some photo's of your friends 2.5td engine with the unit build in?

It has been quiet last few days but still busy. Last weekend there was a sort out in Holland, so i tried my luck there to find some parts. But not much. Only thing i bought was a new 300 tdi end silencer(original) for half the price. But still no 200/300tdi radiator assembly. More luck next time.

Well the new exhaust is ready. But i still have problems with fuel pump. Now it's leaking at the bottem, the damper broken. I called the diesel specialist but he can't get a new one because original it's not on the market any more. I think that's strange because you can buy a refurbished one at paddock' s or rimmer. He said it's probably aftermarket parts. So question from me to you guys! Does anyone know where i can find parts for a cav dieselpump for a 19J engine?

And sorry haven't anything done on the IC yet

Well that's not going to help. I live in Holand and 2.5TD are not so common. So does any one know were i can parts for a CAV pump?

Give these chaps a ring:

http://www.ihertfordshire.co.uk/profile/140016/Hoddesdon/Wade-Diesels-Ltd/

they supplied me with parts for my 200tdi pump, deal with land rovers a lot and know what they are on about.

Hello all, it's been quiet for a while, but still in progress. I managed to get another fuel pump and also a oilfilter adapter with the oilcooler hoses and everything on it. So there's some work to do. The enigine is running very well it pulls good even withe 285's. Because the black smoke when the engine was pulling i disconnect the snorkel from the filter housing. I was supriced by the differance. It 's not only the smoke that is less thick but it pulls harder now an reacts better when i accelerate. A lack of air? I'm still not satisfied but i'll get there. The pump will get a overhaull and maybe i'll put new injectors in.

For the rest it's still the same maintenance. Bought a pair of pro-comp 9000 for the rear but what wast of money was that. So i've to safe for a pair of koni's now. Put a ramsey REP 8000 winch in the front instead of the chinese winch. It's getting there.

The genuine landrover parts book shows no gasket for a TD and the link above is not a genuine parts book.

Yes it is, just on another enthusiast website, gives the same info with update part numbers

there is a gasket on the TD engine, as shown in the lower end gasket kit here http://www.brit-car.co.uk/product.php?xProd=92455
