Forest Eyes
Hi, I am looking at a landy where the owner says the he replaced the chassis with a galvanised one in 2007. It does not look shiny like a galv chassis to me and is there rust in the second pic? Any help gratefully received...
Blippie
The shine of a brand new galv chassis wears off after a couple of months. Galv components will still corrode, but at a slower rate than untreated steel. Cheers Blippie
Forest Eyes
Thank you Blippie. There was me thinking it was gonna last forever and I would be able to shave in it!
specialbikejames
looks like galv chassis to me. Think of galavanised Armco barriers at the side of major roads, they quickly dull and looks very similar to that. Probably best to check the chassis is sound regardless, he may of got his old chassis galvanisd rather than buying a new one. Also Won't he have the receipt? A thousand odd pound receipt for a galv chassis is the kind of thing you keep isn't it?

I have not got as far as asking for docs yet, it is a 200 mile round trip to see it, so I am doing some research (bugging the forum) forum before I take it to stage two. Pass, Western. It looks like it has text on it, I will open it up in PS and have a closer look. The seller said he had it done professionally, so could it be a 'makers mark'? CwazyWabbit
Questions to ask. Was the chassis new? Or an old repaired chassis that was galvanised? How was the replacement done? Body off or full strip down? Worth also checking the crossmembers, supports under the boot floor, bulkhead, battery box, under seat toolbox, as they corrode as well. oh and of course doors and their frames
Forest Eyes
"Bought it from the Forestry Commission and found the chassis was corroded, poss due to (acidic) pine needles"? Therefore replaced with a galv. This is what they say; Landrover Defender 90 300Tdi GALVANISED chassis. Professionally rebuilt on new galvanised chassis in 2007. Chassis is completely rust free. 115,700 miles. MOT end August 2013. Taxed until June 2013. EGR removed and silicone pipes added. Full exhaust, suspension and brake systems new in 2007. Load area fully chequer plated. Galvanised steering guard. Twin rear work lights. Dog guard and roof bars included. Speaker boxes installed in rear with Sony stereo. Toad alarm and immobiliser. 300tdi engine never missed a beat in 6 years of ownership. Driven daily and completely reliable. Cosmetic surface rust bubbles on doors and some panels. Driver's seat has rip. Bumper has surface rust.
Disco-Ron
I would put money on it being a 'richards' chassis, looks like its welded on the corners of the rails . .
Forest Eyes
All this suggests I should go on a road-trip this weekend to have a wee look at it! Thank you guys, Ross
CwazyWabbit
The other pictures on the ad show the bulkhead was once red, I'd guess that has also been replaced. So it's all pointing towards it having been a proper job

cieranc
There's a company up here (North East) who specialise in chassis swaps, when they fit new chassis' they also fit a plate that looks exactly like the one in the pic. I can't read the writing on the plate from this pic, but the layout/format appears the same. But..... they don't strip the body/bulkhead, they lift the body off in one piece. CwazyWabbit
Maybe she's just had a colour change then, looking closer the underside of the bonnet is also red. http://www.autotrader.co.uk/used-cars/land-rover/defender/used-land-rover-defender-hard-top-tdi-radstock-fpa-201241488507823

western
good luck, hope the 90 is what you want, galvy chassis is a great start.
Gazzar
Best of luck, and if you do buy, spend some time on preserving the chassis - a good power wash and a selective application of you favourite anti-rust in the vulnerable areas will ensure that you have decades of rust free motoring! Madcowz
Looks like its worth a trip to see bro. As Ralph says a galv chassis is a great start. Add that to the other bits and work done and you've got a good solid base for your first ever landy. Fingers crossed this is the one for you. I'm still not sure what those boxes are on the inside of the tub above the speakers. Anyone?
steve200TDi
I think it's a trick of the light. What you're actually seeing the strengthener rib in the middle of the side panels and it's making out that there's two narrow boxes on the side panels. western
nothing on the upper body panels just the plain skin inside & the stiffener rib in the middle. just standard 90 hardtop as it should be.

Steve I'd say you are right Steve, if you look at this picture you can see the bottom edge of the side panel (tub rim) is the same width either side of the stiffener Does look incredibly like a box when you first see it though. cackshifter
I spoke to that firm once about getting a new chassis fitted; they seemed very helpful and use Marston chassis. They used to advertise in LRO.
Forest Eyes
Brilliant, thank you one and all. I am off on a road-trip tomorrow, to go and have a look and will hopefully have plenty more questions to ask of the collective as a proud landy-owner soon! Yay, I hear you cry! CwazyWabbit
Good luck Try to look at the Landy objectively when you get there, it's very easy to get carried away with the excitement of it all and overlook problems or convince yourself things are only minor when they are not. There are a lot of Defenders out there so if something doesn't feel right walk away, there will always be another. Good luck, and we expect pictures if you do buy
