Time for my update so here are the photos of the chassis that has been removed. IMG_05441_zpsae65ff8c.jpg

Not looking too bad so long as you take a quick look

Sorry for the focus but you can just see the shock absorber is snapped. I was driving this until I noticed it was very none descript with the steering.

I am looking forward to the new chassis going on. I did not realize that it was so bad the garage said it was the worst they had seen!!!

but at the moment the bill is rising slowly as I need more and more bits. Not financially viable but hey who is counting :rofl::banned:

There's some pretty impressive cracks and holes there! Where's the new chassis from? Richards?

The chassis flexes in the middle when you lift it by the towbar. :o Yes I got one for Richards. There is no point in going half cocked at least the car will last a very long time. Probably outlive me :hysterical:

Bloomin' 'eck  I remember when you first discovered the state of the chassis and said you weren't driving it again till it was repaired and had to hire a car for a journey .... bet you are glad you hired the car now!

I did some major repairs. I replaced about 4 foot of chassis and saw that is was worse than I thought so opted for the replacement with upgrades :i-m_so_happy:

And here was little old me thinking that I was a glutton for punishment.....

It is very punishing particularly on the wallet certainly not worth it on a value basis but everything on the chassis will be virtually new.

OMG, I have never in my life seen a chassis so bad, I just scrapped a 1998 D1 chassis that was perfect, and with papers, it had slight surface rust but what you show us in those pics is horrendous rust and for a car that is not really that old!!!

Good luck with the rebuild, hope you have an understanding bank manager

The bank Manager knows nothing about this. :hysterical: Fortunately. You have to remember also that I have done extensive repairs just to keep it on the road to get to this point. When you lift the tow bar the chassis flexes horrendously.

look on the bright side, at least the chassis flex would of given a comfy, if very peculiar/scary ride!!! :hysterical::hysterical:

Not scary just very soft. Had a broken shock as well!! Ultimately was driving it very very carefully. Never mind engine and box now all back in and the body should be going back on on Monday.

Any shiney new chassis pics? :)

I have and I will get them posted later today. I will try and get into the Garage on Monday as well and get some before the Body goes back on. I have had to remove the ACE so I am a little worried about how it will handle.

Looking lovely :) The old chassis in the background is looking a very sorry site! Amazing to think it got that bad in 12 years though, any ideas why?

Bet you can't wait to have it back together :)

It looks fab and yes it will be great to have it back. Got more toys still to add like Hella 3000's and a front receiver hitch which was removed when I fitted the front bumper.

I live in central Scotland and always buy my cars south of the border because of the heavy use of salt on the roads here. Unfortunately I never looked properly at the registration as all registrations starting with an "S" are from Scotland and worse still mine was from Inverness. I think that was the cause. The body is immaculate.

Also the garage where the work is being done has just done their own Disco 2 of the same age for the same reason.

Bodywork does look in great condition .... apart from the spare wheel mount ;)

Is it just the photo or does the back look a bit low?

The bodywork is great. I had a good look when the chassis was off.......agree about the spare wheel mount and I may just replace that soon if I have any money left. :hysterical:

It has air suspension at the back and it probably has no air in it. :o

Well done ! I've just taxed my DII for the first time today after spending several days wire brushing, grinding, painting, waxoiling and oiling the chassis and underbody.Trouble is you cant get at it all,you just have to hope the oil and waxoil get there....

I've also de-ACEed it,(The SLS had already been removed) My idea is to make it as simple and reliable a possible - for a decent length of time.I dont drive very quickly and I'm more than happy with the ride/handling on coils with no ACE.

My question is - I wonder how many people would have taken up the option of a galvanised chassis as an extra cost option ?

Ally

Doing what I have has been a challenge and not the most cost effective solution. Having said that I have enjoyed it very much. I "deACEd" mine too because I could not control the cost of repair.

Everything on the chassis is either new or refurbished so I can keep the car as long as possible.

By having the chassis off you can access everything and see what needs sorted but I do not recommend you take that option lightly

Les the budget went out the window when I passed the double mark :hysterical: If I sell the car as soon an it is finished I recon I will loose two times the cars value  AT LEAST!!

Cost wasnt important to me,it was just being practical with time - I run a LR garage anyway but I only have one ramp, which clearlyhelps earn my living. The TD5 I bought was worth doing and is as well protected as I could do.(Without going mad)

The galvanised chassis is the answer though,I have a 1960 SII that I'm doing on a galvanised chassis to use as my firewood truck and yard mule. That is going to be alot of work too - it can get you down spending so many hours throwing spanners around, esp if you cant charge for them !
