Bowie69
610 x 410 x 100mm With a bit of trimming it just clipped into the RRC rad frame, so the cowling edge is ~1mm off the core, there's just one screw holding the whole thing in. Obviously needed to remove the brackets from outside of the cowling, but that is was a slitting disc is for....
need4speed
Thanks for the measurements Bowie My rad doesn't have a frame but at 100mm thick I should have plenty space to make something suitable.
need4speed
Actually scratch that. I've just nipped outside and measured I have only 90mm between waterpump and rad core...
Bowie69
Well, sounds like another option for you then I expect FF knows roughly how deep the Freebie ones are..
Tanuki
Best electric fan I've found so far is from Citroen C5/C6 and Peugeot 607 V6 (2.7 or 3-litre) Diesels *with air conditioning*. Made by a company called "Autogamma" in Italy, and shifts prodigious amounts of air - enough to cool a big-block Ford V8 in a friend's Ford GT40-replica. http://www.michelecaroli.com/motor_cooling_fans.asp?id=1563&gm=GA201256 These beasties have a 460-Watt continuously-rated motor! you'll need to design a wiring-loom capable of handling at least 45 Amps continuous load, with 80 Amp fusing so it doesn't blow when the fan starts. And don't even think of applying power to one of these fans without bolting it down - the startup torque is enough to make them real lethal wrist-snappers. FridgeFreezer
SPAL make fans for a lot of people, the FL ones I used are GATES, another common OE, you've got to assume LR rate them for mud & water. An 80W fan sounds pretty weedy, the FL ones can pop a 20A fuse each so likely pushing the 200W mark. This is the best photo I've got showing depth, all bits (rad etc.) being standard Defender V8 position albeit P38 lump/front-end.
need4speed
I don't know what depth those FL fans are but they look waaay more than 90mm! I know I don't have a serp front end but don't know why I've got so little space. It seems that this is going to be my limiting factor... Bowie69
Serp is definitely much shallower, so think the difference is there....
need4speed
I think it's really going to restrict my options until I convert to serpentine at a later date. I may have to put up with some of the weedier, slimmer fans that I linked to earlier for now?
dangerous doug
2 fans better than one big one? I have a single kenlowe fitted that I'm unsure of, roughly the size of a viscous fan and about 75mm deep. Would that shift enough air to cool it? Bowie69
No room the other side I guess?
qwakers
Stumbled upon a box yesterday that contained an X-fan that I forgot I even had! I really need to set about sorting out all the various boxes I have laying around. Anyway the point is I may as well utilise the damn thing. So I had a quick search on eBay and found http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/151280558436?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT Seem pretty good value. There only 80W but should still be ok seeing as I'm using 2 fans. although probably not very waterproof they should suit my rear rad mount nicely(sits high so unlikely to get dunked). many thanks for the heads up im gonna give them a go. need4speed
No room the other side I guess? Not sure Bowie I haven't offered up the front panel/grill yet but at a guess no..
muttleyd
I have a vee belt v8 and it is tight. Used a 2 litre Mondeo single fan. Needed a little trim to the cowl around the top hose, and the thread for the viscous removing from the water pump, but fits fine and runs an x fan. need4speed
Thanks mutley. Interesting point about the waterpump viscous thread. That would gain me a fair bit. I will need to have a look this morning sometime - maybe get away with removing even more than the thread..
FridgeFreezer
2 fans better than one big one? Well, the rad is rectangular so 2 side-by-side covers the whole rad quite nicely compared with one bigger one, but if it works it works. dangerous doug
Cheers fridge, I had a chat with revotec at Peterborough and they did a deal on a dedicated defender v8 twin fan kit. Defiantly an improvement over the single fan.
FridgeFreezer
I also like the ability to run 50% cooling with twin fans rather than flat-out or nothing with one big fan. The theory is it's less of a thermal shock / constant thermal cycling of the block. It's also quieter!
need4speed
Cheers fridge, I had a chat with revotec at Peterborough and they did a deal on a dedicated defender v8 twin fan kit. Defiantly an improvement over the single fan. Just had a look at their defender v8 kit. The custom brackets look very nice but at £280 for the kit it's not cheap. The problem is they give no details of the fans. Just says "high power".. What is the wattage of the fans?
dangerous doug
I payed nowhere near that at Peterborough, they even threw in a switch that I know I'll forget to use...... I can't remember off the top of my head what they are, all I remember is they nearly blew my face off in the demonstration. he rated them at ip68 too
dangerous doug
And draw 10A I think he said.....
need4speed
They don't sound that powerful at 10A but to be honest I can see me having to go down this road as I'm limited for space.. Good IP rating mind you
dangerous doug
There not very deep atall It may be more than 10, my short term memory is ****ed and that is the sort of thing I would forget lol
Bowie69
My Mondeo fans each draw 20A when running...
elbekko
Those look an awful lot like the standard P38 aircon fans.
