Turbocharger
After getting sick of the annual "just one more patch" welding session before the MOT I've bitten the bullet and bought a new chassis. While the spanners are out I'll fit all the accumulated "round tuit" bits I've picked up over the years. I've got these upper rear shock mounts - can anyone ID whose they are, and more importantly what pin-pin shock would fit and be suitable? It's for a softtop Ninety, lightly laden and rarely tows anything, will be used on laning, rough roads and the odd pay and play. I've extended the brake lines already and I bought them for additional articulation.
garymorris
They look like Gwyn Lewis mounts
Anderzander
I thought so too
western
reckon it's Gwyn's parts too, photo in the linked page http://www.gwynlewis4x4.co.uk/product/challenge-rear-shock-mount-single-position/
Diesel_90
No, there not Gwyn Lewis, they look like copies. His are made from 2 pieces of steel folded.
Anderzander
Well spotted ! Are they the Terrafirma ones then ?
muddy
I run similar mounts and got some rough country shocks off David at llama 4x4 on my 90 TC. It does very few miles really only driving to and trialing, towing my 27' caravan or 14' ifor usually with another landrover on. It rides fine I have the same shocks all round with rear springs all round. I would say it's the same as a standard landrover perhaps slightly softer over speed bumps etc. My only concern is the pins are 3/8" wich is good as they don't bend like the fatter pro comp ones my freind has but I do seem to go through quite a few bushes and I have run out of spares from David, I'm just using cheapo ****part ones ATM and to be fair they are doing well. Will.
Anderzander
The pin ones seem to last better if only just nipped up rather than tightened down.
Turbocharger
Thanks guys. Mine are copies as they're welded and don't have the kink in the back plate. I'll pick a suitable shock, +5" is more than I expected!
Anderzander
If they are the same dimensions as Gwyn's they are plus 2" in compression - if you got a +5" you will get +2 upward travel and +3" of rebound or droop. So unless you want to go the dislocation route just get +2" shocks.
landroversforever
No, there not Gwyn Lewis, they look like copies. His are made from 2 pieces of steel folded. That's what I was going to say, and the back plate has a fold in it with his ones. I think the terrafirma ones are a direct copy.
honitonhobbit
Don't forget that Gwyn has had to change his rear mounts to stand up to the over damping of the new Chinese made OME shocks
landroversforever
Don't forget that Gwyn has had to change his rear mounts to stand up to the over damping of the new Chinese made OME shocks I don't think that was all of them, only the 3 position ones
Diesel_90
Yes he's now made some XHD mounts that are for the newer type OME shock. These have 2 mounting possible mounting holes for the shocker rather than the previous 3 position and are made of thicker steel
