OT - "Vintage" Tractor Purchasing

I seem to miss them all …. Lol I looked at this: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/153439228521? Smaller than you’d want - chaps local to me and has a good reputation, which is encouraging! -

Interestingly on this 35 - this isn’t the 3 cylinder Perkins engine - it’s the earlier 4 cylinder one, which has a reputation for poor starting. This one seems to start well, well it smokes a lot to start with - but it clears and it is 1958. It’s also had the injector pump rebuilt .. but what I’ve read is that the glow plugs on these were wired through a big resistor, possibly to protect the switch?, and then they were all wired in series .. so if one failed none of the subsequent ones would get power. So the modern remedy seems to be that there are lots of folk saying they’ve fitted Land Rover ones, from Turners, in parallel and with a relay. https://www.turnerengineering.co.uk/gam100-heater-plug-conversion-kit-c2x20634398 -

Some of the old ones are very simple though and parts can be cheap .. -

Normal width one … not sure why it had the low exhaust - might help me fit it in the garage though I got the OH’s blessing - though not immediately! Where to put it is a question I need to answer - I can possibly make space in my garage for it. If not it might be under a cover outside. I think I’ll start with a flail mower, I’d like a haybob, and a small square baler eventually. Not sure how I find an old baler that’s cheap but not worn out though - I’ve no idea how they work. I did plan on buying a scruffier tractor that I could leave up at the field … this is a bit nice to just leave parked in the middle of nowhere. Longer term I am going to look at getting planning for a small 2 bay barn, something a bit more secure, or if it will fit in the garage at home perhaps even a field shelter to keep the mower out the weather. It’s very exciting ! I’ve paid a deposit and the chap gave me the V5 to take, he said he works on trust. 😊 -

Thoughts and Musings on the Ineos Grenadier
Anderzander replied to Bowie69's topic in The New Ineos Grenadier
I remember a local farmer in the late 90’s telling us Mercedes had produced a new 4x4 - he bought one; an ML 320 (iirc) to replace his Defender. He opened the back to show us two sheep in there eating the leather off the seats. 😂 -
Somewhere a bit further north would be good though 😊

I have a friend who used to buy for the utility companies - none of them (I.e the workers) wanted to get rid of their Defenders - even though the commercial people were telling them there were better, cheaper vehicles - with better warranties… and they kept them for years and years. I think the 3 year thing is not just because of finance and warranty - it’s because the vehicles do become worn out and aren’t that repairable. The Grenadier could get back into that - if it’s reliable, configurable, has the warranty - and is long lived then the total cost of ownership alone might justify it - putting aside the other definitions of value that might work in its favour. Good luck to ‘em I say 😊 -

This is quite a strange conversation ! I’m 52, debt free, can’t afford a Ferrari - but then I’ve worked 32 hours over 4 days for the last 20 years. I value the time more. Which is actually the calculation I did when I decided I coveted a Grenadier - I do really like them, in fact I can’t think of any other new car I’d buy but that one…. but I want the money to go into retiring early - and I still love my Land Rovers. -
Sadly - that seems to happen a lot.
-
I don’t know the owner or the car - but the car has been known to the club for a long time.

Love like blue skies there Daan ! 😊

I missed this -hope you had a great Christmas (and Santa brought you something Land Rover related). Hope 2024 is a good year for us all and hope that I can get out in the little 80 and meet some of you this year.

Should have been a spoiler alert on that! -

I’ve been putting it off - he just started to annoy me a while back. I think it was because he seemed to say simple obvious things in the most drawn out manner - and package them up as wisdom. -
The steering seems to be another individual thing. On an Individual level I’ve never driven anything where I truly liked everything about it - it’s just the balance of what you love to what you don’t that determines if it’s right for you (or if you even let yourself notice the problems!). I guess how many people, of the right demographic, that leaves who would buy one is what determines if it’s a success or not at the market level. That we’ve yet to see for the Grenadier, though I am seeing a good few of them about.

They are brilliant things. I have a few - I should write the numbers down and then loan them out !

Yep you win with Mike a close 2nd 🏅 It’s awesome - is it the Plane that’s moving up North or both of you?

Wheel balancing - How much weight is too much?
Anderzander replied to Iain's topic in Defender Forum (1983 - 2016)
Just looked - I think Michelin’s don’t have a spot, perhaps others don’t either. My Toyo’s have them though. -
Wheel balancing - How much weight is too much?
Anderzander replied to Iain's topic in Defender Forum (1983 - 2016)
I’m saying that because I’ve seen someone put loads of weight on and a more experienced operator change the location to the centre of the wheel and get a better balance with less weights - I've also seen other operators struggle with what it’s telling them. Mud tyres and the wheel type may be the source of that …. But it eroded my confidence in them balancing them well. -
Wheel balancing - How much weight is too much?
Anderzander replied to Iain's topic in Defender Forum (1983 - 2016)
I don’t balance mine any more. I had them done ages ago - and they put masses of weight on. Some fell off - so I took the lot of and there was no change in how it drove. So since then I just don’t bother. I honestly don’t think they really know how to do it. Not just that they tend to balance them from the wheel centre rather than the stud holes .. but how they want to default to putting the weights on the outside of the rim for ease - when that’s not necessarily the best spot to balance it. I honestly wouldn’t bother - get the spot lined up with the valve and then that’s it. -

I hope you aren’t going to be asking about an exploded engine in the future… big wheels, 1.4 transfer, and 3.54 diffs is a lot to ask -
I’ve just found it (conveniently your thread resurfaced) - but I obviously didn’t miss is ! I posted on it ! My memory ! 😂

I missed that @reb78 I’ll do a search in your content. Did you manage to remove any sag from the rear ? Mine hangs down across the alpine lights.
