  1. I've tried the aerosol version as a rust inhibitor or steel wheels and on the Disco roof. Lasts about 6-8 weeks. Its very good
  2. I'm playing with my 200tdi (my 11th in 30 years). But I'm staying clear of black smoke - mainly because it's unburnt fuel. The engine is over-fuelling. Fine in Tractor Pulling but not fine in my motor, because it's wasted money In the present 200 I wanted power between 2 and 3k. 3k is 70mph with my gearing. I wanted fuel economy at that rpm range. I also wanted an engine that pulled well off turbo. Personally I wouldn't tough a boost pin. I'm tempted by the Boost Ring , but only because it makes sense - and Maverick is doing the testing Diesels go quicker if you get more air and more fuel in. But it's a balanced mix. Too much of either is not worth it.... So look at induction ( I have a stage 2.5 head on mine) and I've Daaned the inlet manifold (look up what Daan has done to his 300). Then look at Exhaust - get those fumes out. A straight through pipe is excessive as you get too much scavenge, but that centre box can go. The system is meant to be 2.5" from factory. Many replacement exhausts simply aren't. Britpart is 2.25" Injectors are a 100k service item - so get them tested and 'refreshed' Now is the time to start tweaking - small increments on boost and fuelling
  3. When I was still working in Land Rec, the most interesting slag we found on site, was in Poole (Tatnum Park for those that know Poole). It was the site of a glass foundry - making glass ingots for the glass industry in the Victorian times. Glass slag is amazing stuff - vicious, mind. From chunks resembling Chert and Obsidian; some as big as a wheelbarrow, through to lumps of what looked like ice with oil in... As we were building playing fields for a primary school, it made for an interesting job
  4. It's slag - I confirmed with one of my Geo-tech Engineers; but there are lost of different forms of slag. This is more likely the second or third scraping off the molten iron. The first scraping looks like badly cast concrete Not to be confused with clinker - the burnt residue form a blast furnace - used as road infill and mildly toxic Or PFA (Pulverised Fly Ash) - residue from a coal fired power station - used for motorway embankments and bit mounds, up to the late 80's; (Beloved of Badgers)
  5. It's got a turbo pump on it... Are you aware of how to tune a CAV pump equipped Di?
  6. do you know of one for VW? M2001 T4 needs a fob re-programme and main dealer want £370.00
  7. Very easy to tune Is that one a turbocharged version, with the turbo removed?
  8. Yours will be a BT50 lump then. I'll suggest that he find a decent independent ford dealer
  9. A friend has an 07, Mk3 Ford Ranger (Mazda BT50). His key fob has died (not battery) Ford don't want to know - in fact he was told that there is no Mk3 Ranger Mazda are even worse - Mazda Swindon stated that 'Mazda don't sell pick up trucks in the UK, so this must be a grey import' He can get a new key fob off eBay. Any suggestions as to where he can get it programmed?
  10. I have a crimper similar to that. Not cheap either. When I bought it I thought it was carp. So left it in the drawer for 6 years. Then a friend - who is a electrical engineer (hands on) - showed me how to adjust the crimp pressure, using the snail cam. It's brilliant now
  11. Some long chats with a couple of friends last night. Back feeling motivated. I'm going to ring Richard today I'm going to finish fitting the Electric Gauge and remove the test gauge. Then I'm just going to drive it. Collection of my spare engine has been planned - and what it will need to be ready to fit. When that's done it will be bagged and put n the engine racks in the barn, ready. I have too much time and effort (let alone money) invested in what is a strong, tidy vehicle
  12. I've lost any motivation to continue. I'm seriously thinking of breaking or selling the vehicle and buying a nice reliable Japanese vehicle. Towing 3.5 tonnes is no longer essential, as I can use a tractor. The chipper is only 1.75 tonnes and tows easy. I've got access to a 2.7 tonne trailer (with Hiab....
  13. Really does make a huge difference. I'm working on pressures at hot, not warm, using tell-tales on the oil cooler outlet pipe and the turbo oil drain pipe
  14. When I first bought the Disco, she would always smoke on the overrun, really badly immediately after engine braking in low first down a steep descent. What we call 'Smeach' in Somerset. Big clouds of stinky smoke that quickly clears. So I had the head reconditioned by Hamlins - as well as the Stage 2.5 works. It's been fine since. Smoke on start up is normal for a 200, so a little oil being burnt is barely noticeable. I've left the test gauge connected for the time being, so this morning I had a brisk drive into town and back, checked it again and the pressure at hot was 12 psi. Bang on. 900 rpm idle. So better than last night. The weird thing, last night, was that at 2k rpm the pressure was fluctuating, between 40 and 32 and back. I'm stumped on that Luckily I've been given a spare engine, so I'll collect that, remove it from the vehicle, then see how things develop with the original lump
  15. Stephen Do you want me to get a couple and send them out?
  16. Well, it hasn't cured it. It's better, but not significantly. I haven't tried Nick's trick yet - I am going to I'm going to run the vehicle and see what happens And pick up a spare engine
  17. In life, complicated can be fun , but only briefly. If something works, do it An auto in a towing/off tarmac/multi purpose vehicle is an excellent idea. It works
  18. Never call them a 'bulb' around electricians. It's a lamp, goes in a lantern. A bulb is for daffodils
  19. Give yourself leeway. Set the alarm at 700, then you know you are inside the safe zone Also, don't do anything until you have serviced your injectors. Hot EGT and dribbly injectors = pistons you can see all the way through
  20. Its a very simple lump. You'll need the ECU. Do you want to mate it to a manual box? The EDC Disco's have got an unjustified bad rep
  21. Idle and overrun is most likely the valve stem seals I'm happy to stay with an engine I can run on rape seed oil. Knowing what I know now, I think I would simply re-build the 200. I have an excellent engine shop local to me and with the help of my friend, I reckon I could build a very high standard of engine. I'm very happy with my stage 2.5 head. I'm experimenting with a modified inlet manifold - but that's early doors. Electric will come, but I'll not rush down that road
  22. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/401838435500 This was the ones Lasted about six months so far
  23. Nick Don't forget when new, the 200tdi had to be consuming in excess of 2 litres of oil every 1000 miles, for the dealer to do a check on the engine (for warranty). They are a wet engine and a consumer of oil. My RRC would use a litre of oil every 1000 miles. The 110, about 500 ml. The 100" nothing. The present Disco needs about 200 ml every 1000 miles... I think I am going to try your washer removal thing... for a 5 psi gain, it's worth it
  24. I fitted some cheap 382 designation LED lamps, rated at 9,000 lumen (!) so if you believe the jargon, that's in excess of 700 watts (really?) Whatever, they are amazing. Allowed me to dump the auxiliary reversing lights on the roof rack. So good I fitted a set to SWMBO's T4
