  1. A little while ago I posted for advice regarding oil leaking from the central section of my rear hub and someone suggested the breather may be blocked…Well have a look at the images the banjo bolt was a solid mass of rust and when I tried to renovate it i crumbled like a biscuit. Question is are these bolts called banjo bolts or is there a proper name for them? Also are they universal to Land Rover axles i.e. not model specific?
  2. I am just about to roller mine with a job lot of old MOD paint I got cheap. Perhaps not that concourse look but durable and above all cheap.
  3. Should that do that, like that?

  4. I know this is a stupid question but here goes . What does the diff breather look like and whereabouts on the rear diff casing is it on a D reg 90? Many thanks James
  5. I have just got some from ebay and they cost me £50 inclusive of post but they can make more. If you do buy from ebay don’t forget to ask if the springs are still strong or even unbroken as I know someone that bought some with weak springs that were a waste of time . All the best
  6. Heat them up with the smoke-spanner (gas torch)until dull red and quench them with wd40 have a bucket of water handy though just in case
  7. Yup....been there done that. Be ever-so careful when drilling to use a really good sharp drill as I got halfway through and the captive nut came loose and fixed itself to the shank of the drill so it just spun inside the pillar.....Grrrrrrr, so use a really sharp drill and back the drill off once in a while or suffer the same fate as I Good Luck
  8. Thanks I couldn't remember if it was black or white smoke that was the one to worry about. Cheers
  9. Hi, Just noticed that when I have been out in my (200tdi) 90 and the engine is up to temperature I don't even get a whiff of smoke but when I turn it off and then re-start her she gives a plume of jet black smoke momentarily and then chugs away without smoking at all Does anyone know what this is and is it serious All the best James
  10. Scratch That!!!!!!! Just found out they possibly no longer trading and it seems from a quick Google that a lot of people are waiting for their orders. Well all I can say Is they were fantastic when I dealt with them Ebay could be a source of locks or lock parts. Sorry for the duff info earlier, all the best James
  11. Hi, I have got the same locks on my 1986 90 and had all sorts of advice re the types of locks used and the cylinders available so ended up with about four sets that wouldn't work However someone recommended The Land Rover Orphanage and they were fantastic. The chap that owns and runs it knew the lock at once and supplied me with the right lock parts by post. "Service as it should be" Follow the link. www.landroverorphanage.com All the best James
  12. Got the same thing with mine. Like Riley says check the breather
  13. Hi, With the summer approaching I thought I would have a go at replacing my old rotten cappings with my nice galvanized ones I got from ebay. Has anyone done a 90 van back (three door) cappings job and if so was it easy and if not anybody got any tips to help me out. Cheers
  14. I did mine on my D reg 90 but had to drill the bolt heads off and then used a gas torch to heat the bolt shaft and quenched it with wd40 when good and hot. Then fixed the shafts of the bolts with a good pair of mole grips and they turned bit by bit My doors still seem a bit out but they do close now
  15. Novice Warning Hi, Thats exactly whats happened to my 1986 90, radiating from the offside rear hub center leaking from the black plastic end cap. I have already replaced an oil seal on this axle when this occurred before and that seemed to sort it out for a while. I have been told that it is probably pressure in the axle due to a blocked breather blowing the oil seal again. Is a drive flange gasket failure an emergency "get it done quick" job or an "around-to-it" job? Is it common as I seam to see quite a few land rovers of the age of mine with oily tires with what seems to be the same problem, could the oil seep into the brake drums ? Cheers
  16. The sat nav method is ok but you have to bear in mind that the reading is not indicating your actual speed at that moment but the reading taken from the information tracked from a number of co ordinates sent to the satellite a fraction of a second earlier once the information has been processed it registers on your gps. Thats why if you use something like GPS SPEEDO with a PDA you get fluctuating speeds that don't seem to correspond with your speedo or indeed road speed.
  17. Thats right, I was actually talking to a friend of mine who has been in the motor sport industry for years and so has a good idea about steering systems and its geometry he actually drove the 90 back some 180 miles when we picked it up. He said that it "didn't drive like a car because it isn't a car" you see I have only driven more road orientated part time 4x4s "OK so I had a Suzuki" Anyway I think it could be due to the large rumbley tires and perhaps as someone said a tracking issue but I will also give the damper a look. Thanks for the reply Cheers James
  18. A trip to the tame tyre fitters then. All the best
  19. Hi, Im am please to say my old 90 has passed her MOT but having driven her for a little while now I have to say that the steering is rather twitchy but perhaps thats the way Defenders drive as I wouldnt know as this is my first. Or could it be the steering damper is shot?? But wouldnt the MOT people pick that up? Any advice appreciated
  20. Hi does anyone know the type fo bulb used in early 90 instrument panels i.e push fit or t5 fitting what ever that is as I would like to replace them with LEDs as they seem to last longer and be more forgiving of vibration and other landrover stuff. Cheers
  21. Breather pipe, good point never even thought of that.... Does oil normally come out from that end bit under the dust cap I just ask as its a new dust cap thats all. By the way she passed the MOT. Cheers Ralph
