  1. Ok, after a week spent on my touring biking cycling up the Outer Hebrides gives you a bit of time to think! and check out a fair few fancy Land rovers other people (usually dutch or Germans) where using on there holidays! So Saturday just gone I went a test driving... I've found a local 110 double cab 02 plate 80k on the clock for 7500... doesn't sound bad until you start looking at the jobs it needs doing, After the first test drive of a TD5 I was suprised to see how much more responsive it is mainly pulling away but as soon as you start getting to 60+mph its very much similar to my 200Tdi 90 (which was a pleasant suprise actually) - the Service history had a stamp in at 21k and then 72k... not exactly what you want to see really... Jobs I found that needed doing included: rear cross member, front springs, front disc & pads, all 4 doors bent and rusty - non of them shut properly, fron left swivel seal leaking, very juddery pulling away on 1st with very little throttle - so cluch needed looking at... I was a little but disgusded it even got through its MOT to be frank, aspecially with the lumpy breaks and at least 1 colapsed spring. anywhooo I was pleasantly suprised how confident I was about telling the dealer chap the list of my findings! he soon stopped arguing with me. Seeing how much its been abused doesn't inspire me to pursue this one... So next test drive was something a little more plush.... 56 plate Land rover 110 XS 40k on the clock in a rich dark blue... I think it was about 16k... OMG I think I have been spoilt for life after this experience, I rather fine vehicle that tickled my tast buds but unfortunatly was to much casheroonies for me... Now I belive I have learnt a small lesson here (which is unusual for me) and I'm going to save the pennies up so I can buy summit a little bit smarter than another money pit. Its a nice feeling to walk into a car/truck dealership and know precisely what you're looking at and have the confidance to say, "oi thats wrong" - one thing is for certain, I'm buying a noise killer kit for the 90 as its rediculously loud compared to the other 2 vehicles!
  2. Oh that doesn't sound too good, what was the problem? warped head? when you say diesel you mean burnt or unburnt?
  3. I did a quick search and pulled up things like, slightly different heads, steel dowls, somthing to do with 1 hole instead of 2.. some ECU changes and refinments. Taking a wild guess I should be going for a 15p/16p engine if I can find one.
  4. Whats impovments did they make to the engines after 02? anyone know what the 15p prefix was for? Cheers
  5. Some good advice on the Td5 thanks chaps. My main and only motivation for this is that I just love driving my 90, but the problem with that is its not by any means a comuting vehicle, because of all its silly modifications I've got a limited milage policy on it, also its noisey as hell (your ears start to ring after a 20 min drive!!!) as I never finished putting all the new sound proofing in it. This truck is like my family now so its not going to be going anywhere (Present plan - i want to take it apart again and paint it properly, and put a new engine in it - when I get a garage... presently not got anywhere to properly work on it just now!) I went for a tootle round in one of our Mountain rescue Td5 110's and I was amazed at how comfy it was and quiet!.... which has gotten me thinking... I've been checking verious prices and as usual for defenders they are all over the place, its more being in the right place at the right time I think!
  6. Ok, obviously having a not quite finished LR90 is't enough hassle for me and I've got this rediculous idea of trading my nice reliable 04 Diesel Focus for a 110 double cab TD5... this 110 will be my "runabout" so I'm looking at standard as possible etc. good for cruising as well as eveything else i do. Now I'm not super rich and been looking at trucks, and what seems to be in my price range are all trucks with 100k on the clock, familiar but not totally with Td5's I'm looking at avoiding the earlier ones as they had some of the early teething problems etc. but what can I expect to be going wrong on a Td5 with 100k on the clock, anything I really need to be looking out for? Drivetrain isn't so much of a concern as I've re-built axles before, its more the Td5 power plant my knowledge is lacking.... am I being a little ediotic here...? Any advice appreciated Mav
  7. For what its worth I'd check out your fuel filter and possible change it too. I had some similar problems on my 200tdi, after changeing the lift pump and chacking all the lines etc, changeing the fuel filter ended up sorting it.
  8. Sorry to hear that, where about in the uk are you?
  9. I think in the longer run this would be a better idea, certainly as you weren't looking at doing it for an upgrade in strength. Will allow you to give the rest of the axle a fettle and check over, then like you said you know you've got summit good.
  10. Simples... yup forgot about that. Hmm word of caution, if for whatever reason you trash the diff (which is hard to do but possible) then you cant easily repair a salisbury diff. The pinion drive bearing is going on mine, for the effort of sorting it, i think I'll just be putting in a standard one back in.
  11. hmm from what I've read on here (do a few axle searches) its a little trickier then first imagined, as the stub axles for discs are different lengths due to caliper clearance on the inside of the wheel, then there's a different hub needed for the shortend stub axle etc etc, the mounting bracket for the caliper also... I started looking into it but got put off, there is a retro fit disc brake set that a company called Zues engineering do, last time I got a price from them it was about 500 squid. I went for just refurbishing the drum setup on my axle and I cant say I've had any problems with the balancing of them etc. Keep an eye on fleebay too as you do get salsbury disc brakes pop up every so often.
  12. As Longlandy says, you'll need to check the prop (if its original then yeah you probably need a shorter one) I've got a Salisbury on my 90 also a bit of a lift too (1 to 2 Inch). Some ejit was running a too long a prop when I got the truck, not good for your transfer box, after a lot of reaserch I found that FRC 8386 (TVB100610) - 300tdi front prop, fitted up just right. You wont be able to change the disc over without modifications.
  13. Hahaha, this actually made me laugh out loud!!! I'm glad I was in the office early and no-one heard! I'm trying to learn from previous mistakes!!!! but alas I recon this will go for more money than I'm willing to shell out for!
  14. When I was looking for CV's I'm sure I found a post on here about them. From what I remeber the post talked about Britpart CV's been a bit of a lottery. Some people had good service out of them and others didn't (a common story) that i think is the problem with the brand. If you're willing to play that perticular lottery than go for it. If you have the time, workshop and tools to change the cv's out easily after they break after a tootle to the shops then fair enough. I don't so went for the Genuine option and fingers crossed wont have a problem with them for some miles to come (at about 6k just now after 8 months).
  15. Just perusing as I do and I've come across this truck My link its quite interesting as it looks like its had some care being taken in its creation. It has a distinct military look about it, irrespective of its green colour!!! Is this a creation using older series doors etc? I've not seen anything quite like it before. I don't know about anyone else but I rather like the look of it. Mav
  16. I picked up some new genuine ones for I think it was £80 last August. It was either Brit-car, craddocks or rimmerbros... I can't remeber which, I'll dig down my invoices and check. I'm not a fan of Britpart stuff, I've tried and there stuff just doesn't cut it, maybe they do sell some good stuff, but I'm not wasteing any more of my money finding out whats good and whats not.
  17. 4x4 prices where crazy over the winter period, personnaly if you could wait till the end of the year then i would, you'll defo get a better price for it, especially after 2 pretty harsh winters... people will start buying 4x4 again come November time ready for "the snow". Its a funny one, as I'm keeping my eye out for a 110CSW and I'm not really willing to pay much over 3.5k - i think people are holing onto there money just now, and with Land Rovers having such a subjective price tag, it kinda makes it even more of a lottery for buyer and sellers. Mav
  18. Where did it go to? - not looking for precise details by the way, just wondered.
  19. I was browsing camel trophy hits when came across this... My link
  20. I'm falling out of love with my 90 right now... after a total re-build last year it seems to still need attention every flippin week, I just want to drive the thing.
  21. Now you see, I'm not like the rest of you forum whores, I'm LR4x4 through and through...! If I can't get it here, then its either 1)not worth knowing, 2)fictional
  22. Right... i stripped the black insulation tape back as far as i could on the quater light part of the loom, I found 3 repairs to the earth wire within 100mm stretch of wire... and thats where I found the fault, I whipped the whole spur out and just put in a new plug and wire going back to the bullet connectors. While doing that i found a similar problem on the reversing light too (suprised it was actually still working!), so did that while I was down there. I now carry a stock of new bulb housings, and have got quite competent at removing the pins on NAS spec connectors to remove the broken rusty pin from the buggers... whos bright idea was it to use one steel pin?!!! At least its now working! wooo who. Thanks again chaps for your input.
  23. Hmmm, I've check the website, but not seen the article... I still have my reservations... but I wont dispute indisputable proof Just my head is still screeming why would you change the body shape so much etc. it just looks so half arsed. even for a concept vehicle you don't go to the trouble of doing the body work, then sticking some tatty standard mil spec indicator lights on it etc. I'm not sure why I find this so hard to digest. For examples of what I see concept vehicles to be like: My link1 My link2 My link3 My link4 - a really nice one here... I'm just glad it stayed a concept as it looks pants.
  24. I think you're about there for an older engine, thats about what i get out of mine, which is same setup. she sits happily at 62mph on motorway and i would say I was thrashing it, but its working, will get up 70+ thrashing with a bit of downhill mixed in. I'm working on sorting out a refurbished set of injectors, I've read some posts that this can be a contributor for older engines.
