  1. He did by the end did he not
  2. The collective opinion is a good thing but but cannot be based on a generalism. it has to be based on actual experience. As most have said on this particular debate some stuff is good and some stuff is cr*p I am swayed by the general view but it is very important to me that I get genuine feedback on actualities rather than generalities. I was offered the disks and polybushes on the recommendation of a 4x4 dealer who stated that he would use them. At that time he did not know my budget or my preferences. Up to that particular point I would have avoided using them. This form me has been a very interesting discussion. I am not an armchair mechanic and fully respect the opinions on this site which is why I post here and why I have been on this site when it was originally the LRE Forum. I have many more posts but my profile somehow got erased.
  3. A very interesting debate and what I was wanting to hear. Nick point taken about the BS. I work with BS's on a daily basis so have a good grounding and understanding. I have no axe to grind either about Britpart but what I do not want to do is merely exclude them on the basis that the consensus on this Forum is that they are cr*p because someone knew someone's cousins auntie who said they were cr*p in 1856. I have an objective and that is about resolving my chassis issue and setting the car up for at least 3 years will little to do other than basic maintenance. So on the brake disk issue, of three people who have experience of them only two of which have used them on their own vehicles and the other being a fitter the Disks in use have performed quite well. As I said and very interesting debate.
  4. Thanks guys for the comments very interesting despite the little infighting. In summary the only issue with the proposals are whether I should be installing original rubber rather than poly bushes not that Britpart bushes are bad. Diesel Dog your comments about the brake discs would stack. The brakes are manufactured to British Standard that means that they should perform to a minimum standard and manufactured to a certain quality to meet that standard so not a lottery. So unless someone actually has had bad experience then the brake disc are fine and I need to decide on Poly bushes or rubber bushes.
  5. Have been given a quote for the parts that I need for a rolling chassis project for my Disco. I have been offered Britpart Polybushes and brake discs. I know the discs are manufactured to the BS so they should be fine but what about the poly bushes. If they are Ok should I opt for the Yellow or the Black? What is the Difference? Thnaks
  6. BM You are 100% correct. Went over to my mothers tonight and tried it. There is only a very slight difference but make it impossible to fit. Anybody want a set of Freelander 2 18" Alloys
  7. Thanks MG what is the CPD?
  8. I have them in storage at my mothers 30 miles away otherwise I would
  9. I have a Discovery 2 and a set of Freelander 2 18" alloys does anyone know if the wheels will fit?
  10. The only reason I saw it was after changing a wheel for a trip to London from Glasgow. I did literally lie awake worrying about it until I decided to hire a car for the trip..........You are right I am a lot happier.
  11. I have now welded steel into three of the four radius are mounting points. The only thing holding the axles on was the side chassis mounts for the radius arms cos when I went in with the grinder the bottom mounts just about fell off. There is still some work to do but at least I know it is safe. I think I am going to source a good chassis get it galvanised and build up a rolling chassis so I can swap it over. The rest of the car is fine just the chassis that is rotten.
  12. Isn't that just a leaky sunroof common on all Discos.
  13. Yes there are some idiots but I watched a news report this morning on Sky where a Audi 4x4 was driving along a road that had a 4x4 stuck out of camera shot where the occupants had been rescued by emergency services. On the face of it the guy was nuts and giving responsible 4x4 drivers a bad name. His looked like an ordinary car so the reporter stopped him and interviewed him live. He confirmed his car was a 4x4 so that was the first issue. The second issue was that the road in question flooded frequently and it was normal for drivers to "wade" along the road. I think we need to be very careful of media reports and ask what the facts are behind the story.
  14. DD Taking the body off to change the engine of clutch the seem like a challenge beyond the competence of the average DIYer and as I am considering a chassis swap on my Disco 2 I may get the opportunity to discover just how much of a challenge but my view is if you are capable of pulling the car to bits a method of body removal will be found even is it means getting 10 burly friends to grab a side each and lift. After all the body is designed to be removed unlike the disco 2 so everything will be set up. I will lay odds that given 5 to 10 years and there will be discussions on the forums about this very subject.
  15. Paul Thanks for the reply. I have been to the garage that I use today, I know the owner, and he has just done a swap on his Disco 2 had his new Galvanised chassis fitted and powder coated everything. It looked like a work or art underneath. Was thinking about getting him to do it for me but whilst the cost of £1200 was not too bad I am unsure about what else will need done. If I do it myself I can spend £1200 on a truck to run around with and still have it at the end of the excercise. Just take my time and get it right
  16. I think we as the "DIY enthusiasts" are the ones that are antiquated. Kids growing up will be more used and conversant with the electronics than we ever were. Think about when injections systems were first introduced that was when they said DIY car maintenance was over but I have had EFi range Rovers and looked after them for many year. No so lond s you have access to a computer connection kids and I use the term as anyone more than 10 years younger than I should be able to get to grips with Disco 3's and 4's I will just go to the garage or drive older cars either that or wait until my sons are old enough to drive and get them to sort the car out !!
  17. Has anyone done a chassis swop on a Disco 2? I am just wondering how easy or difficult and how long it took? Also what problems were encountered? Thanks
  18. Have now had a decent look at it and whilst it is bad I do not think it is terminal. The worst bit by far was the photo above but the other side of the chassis is at least solid so that is giving it structural strength. Not the worst bit The underside of the structural zip tie Another view of the bad bit. Overall it is bad but it is not as bad as I had initially thought. One area where I could do with advice is where the radius are bracket connects to the chassis if there is rust behind do I take the bracket off and reweld or do i plate round it. I am fearful that the rust will just continue to wreak havock.
  19. Mav It has not sagged as the metal is still connected at the bottom. I was going to seek out the good steel and weld 50mm box section across it both sides to strengthen it while I cut it about. That will be the first job.
  20. It has only been 5 months since the MOT I did think about contacting VOSA I have no come back on the seller but I do have on the MOT garage I think.
  21. Maverik I would think that you are very right when I saw that rust i nearly died. The only option is repair I have only had the car 3 months and did not spot this. Si there is rust elsewhere but I will have a much better idea once I have it on ramps. No offence taken I have welded before a lot without much problem but in this case I need potentially to take a section of the chassis out to repair it with new metal that was the reason for asking. The car will not be going anywhere until I have this repaired. I was supposed to drive to London last Friday when I spotted it Thursday afternoon . Lay awake worrying until two and then decided that it would be best to hire a car instead.
  22. While changing a wheel on my Disco I saw something that looked wrong. It took a few seconds to work out the problem but I got there in the end. Any suggestions on how best to repair this? Rhe obvious answer is very carefully.
  23. Western I will wrap them around the handle in some way. I only had it there so wind the cable on to the drum and try it out. The next job is to sort the set up so that I can put it on the back as well.
  24. Just finished setting this up Now you see it .............. And now you don't
