  1. Thanks to all. After a couple of days the central locking, alarm and the interior lights started working normally and everything is now back to normal. Now just need to sort out the chassis.
  2. Unfortunately not had nothing to attach to other than armco on the other side of the road which would have been dangerous. Discretion was the better part of valour. It is my D2 yes. What does the IDM look like? The fuse box could have been in water certainly the engine ECU had no problems.
  3. My Disco has had yet more adventures. On Monday night I was caught in the snow on black ice. As I approached a 90 degree bend I had no response from the steering or the brakes. As I was approaching armco I was happy that I managed to get some traction which started me round the corner but once started would not stop. The end result was I ran over the top of a small tree before ending up on my side in a very boggy ditch. After 3 hours I was home with the help of Recovery who pulled me out of the water filled ditch. The car started easily and has run fine since the seats are wet from water ingress but most things are in order. The recovery driver said I was very lucky as I has stopped on a very big sponge. Apart from the bumper a dent on the door which will push out and a broken indicator I have no real damage. I am left with an electrical issue. The electrical issue I have concerns the central locking and the interior lamps. The central locking will not lock the doors but will open them all. The light stay on all the time. Does anyone have a clue what the problem is I would guess that there is a control box that has been flooded and needs either replaced or dried out but don't have a clue where to start.
  4. Spongie I did the same and bought a red one by mistake. I have thought about cutting the tab off but not got round to it yet as the project is not fitted. I have gray connectors on one half of my jump leads and my winch, on the front of the car and I have the cable with grey set up for the rear after I change the chassis.
  5. Am still in the process of aquiring the parts but buy things like spots instead. Will focus in the next couple of months on getting the chassis galvansized and getting the parts to make a rolling chassis.
  6. Greg Spot on very easily done even taking the bumper off. Thanks for your help.
  7. Greg Just the ticket thanks for your help it basically involves taking the bumper off. I have ordered M10 rivnuts so I will try those to see if I can do everything from the top first. Now just need to work out how I can adapt the bar to allow the spot lights to fit as I do not have enough depth. Have bought some Hella Illuminators which are too deep for the standard mount.
  8. Tried Googling but found nothing with my search so any ideas on the search words? Also I have bought M10 rivnuts for the job good idea or not?
  9. I have go the spots and the light bar I can wire the lights up but I have no instructions as to how the bar is fitted to the bumper. I suspect that I drill holes and bolt into the crush cans but that is all it is a suspicion. Does anyone have the instructions?
  10. I bought my TD5 in August with 10 months MOT in November I found that my chassis was completely shot. I have given up trying to weld it and have already replace about 4 ft of chassis with possibly another 2-5 ft to go. I like the car so much I am going to put a galvanised chassis on it and replace all the shocks bushes etc..
  11. CwazyWabbit I left Glasgow on Friday night to go to London where I spent the weekend. No snow in Glasgow when I left or when I got home. Weather got progressively worse on the way down until about Stafford then got better until London. Did not use the car much in London, Dropped my friend off at Heathrow at 11am on Monday and set off back to Glasgow. Got as far as Carlisle where there was little snow and it went bang. I don't know whether the temperature has much effect but where I was was cold but not below zero. but had been through worse earlier in the day and the weekend. I know the airbag has a small hole as I had found it when I changed a wheel so maybe the temperature played on that in some way. I got the parts this morning and the car is now fixed as good as new.
  12. Dunc thanks for the info. It was very uneventful. I was in the outside lane at 70mph I noticed the car wobbling like the suspension was on jelly and even then it was very slight. I slowed down moved over to the inside lane and then all of a sudden there was a loud bang like a tyre or a balloon had blown. No effect to the handling of the car I just pulled on the hard shoulder and called the AA. Absolutely no drama at all.
  13. This is what happened to the rear air spring on my Discovery on the M6 last night. As I was in the outside lane the car seemed to be a little wobbly so I slowed and pulled into the inside lane just as the spring went bang. This is the end result. That and a two our delay while the AA got me home. What I need to know now is how it is fixed in as the explosion had torn it out of the mounts.
  14. I had the same problem with my P38 Range Rover I simply fixed it by drilling three holes where the welds were and putting self tapping screws in. Did the job and lasted.
  15. RR Welcome. TD5 is very nice and I bought mine in August. Oil leaks on Land Rovers are common so not a cause for concern to begin with. A recon gearbox is simply one that has been stripped down and rebuilt how good or how bad it is depends very much on who did the reconditioning and what was done during the rebuild. How bad is the leak and where is it leaking. I personally would look at it myself, determine the cause and try to reseal. Take some photos and post them up here there will be plenty of guys like myself that know what will be wrong and how to fix it. Hope this helps
  16. Steve Interesting argument about capiliary attraction and have no reason to dispute what you say. Bitumen finish or a tanking membrane in normal circumstances relies on a brickwork backing for protection requiring another skin of brick or block. The ship lap boarding or the Sika render therefore are probably my preferred solutions. Unless the whole structure was insulated then 70mm of insulation on one wall would have little effect as the heat losses in the rest of the building would be substantial. a bit like blocking up the 25% of the holes in a sieve. My own garage is subtrainian and unfinished at the moment requiring the tanking membrane to be finished so it is a subject that I understand and am interested in.
  17. As a Architect and without seeing the garage I would suggest the brick are not as water resistant as you would hope. If I am right in what I have read then there is no plant life actually attached to the wall therefore that would suggest that there is no reason that the plants are causing a problem. I would guess that the brick have become saturated or have become pourous. I would suggest you get a liquid damp proof course injected into the whole wall it can be done very simply. A chemical damp proof course is absorbed into the wall over a band of say 300mm, in normal conditions, making a band 300mm high waterproof and stopping rising damp and is often installed in wet conditions. In this case the whole wall needs protection from driven rain. An alternative to this would be a Sika render internally which is a tanking render system this is expensive and can only be undertaken by an approved contractor. The chemical dpc can be simple gravity fed into the wall pm me for more info.
  18. Chris I have driven Landrovers of all kinds for 15 years. Not having any other car. I currently drive a 51 plate TD5 which is a very good car and thoroughly enjoy. I drive about 20000 miles a year. Having only had the car since August I have put 7000 miles on it and it has been faultless. The issues I have is a rotten chassis which I should have spotted before I bought but I was smitten when I saw it and did not delve deeply enough. I have the obligatory leaky sunroof but once I have fixed the sunroof and the chassis I will have an excellent motor. I have had two new Freelanders a FL on an 05 and a FL 2 both covered largish mileage and were great. I had about 4 Range Rover classics which were good also. I would add that if you drive a car for the business you will not get the tax breaks, if you are self employed, that you currently get with driving a commercial. Having got the TD5 I am thinking about getting a commercial TD5 for my business and I can write off all the costs against my business and have a spare vehicle as well. I too am the only driver in the house but certainly see the benefits of two vehicles. Three when I finally restore my CSK.
  19. DD Yes I think he is serious but sadly there are two other people who think he is too and have made offers. I don't know what is worse the asking price or the offers. Mind you someone could be offering the real value of about £200,00
  20. Certainly did on mine it nearly blew away doing 50 down the motorway Though if you can get a TD5 with a good chassis I would encoure it. I am in the process of putting a new chassis on mice because the boys and everything else is really sound.
  21. Thanks guys will take a look when I get a chance.
  22. Can anyone tell me where to find the chassis number on a Disco 2 chassis. I always thought it was at the steering box mount.
  23. Not yet am still cutting out rot but I am going to rechassis it regardless.
  24. He did by the end did he not
  25. The collective opinion is a good thing but but cannot be based on a generalism. it has to be based on actual experience. As most have said on this particular debate some stuff is good and some stuff is cr*p I am swayed by the general view but it is very important to me that I get genuine feedback on actualities rather than generalities. I was offered the disks and polybushes on the recommendation of a 4x4 dealer who stated that he would use them. At that time he did not know my budget or my preferences. Up to that particular point I would have avoided using them. This form me has been a very interesting discussion. I am not an armchair mechanic and fully respect the opinions on this site which is why I post here and why I have been on this site when it was originally the LRE Forum. I have many more posts but my profile somehow got erased.
