  1. Happy Christmas to all Barbecue planned for later, do drop in if you are passing
  2. Glad you got it fixed, a good start to your LR4x4 membership Jim - yes we have changed a number, the early post 02 ones mainly, later ones seem to be better but the whole assembly is not a patch on the Salisbury though on the plus side it usually has less backlash. Can't believe they thought it was squaddie-proof enough for a Wolf though
  3. Start it up and if you hear clangclangclangclangclangclangclangclangclangclangclangclangclangclang you need a thicker gasket
  4. I would think the most likely possibility is that there is a wire chafed through somewhere which is giving 12V to the coil of the starter solenoid, or the key has some sort of internal short doing the same. The solenoid might be sticking though - wouldn't rule it out.
  5. Speed sensor is the most likely cause - it's on the transfer box
  6. You would have to be fairly ham fisted to skip three gates on the selector when you were only intending to change one! When I use 3rd for something (e.g. overtaking) and then back to Drive I just move the lever without pressing the button, most selectors are designed so they will move between 3 and D without pressing the button, to stop going past the gate and into neutral or reverse on a motorway. Having once rolled a short distance backwards down a steep hill at about 5mph in my old Discovery with the box in D (backing down to hitch up a tow rope), I wouldn't try it again as the noise that came out of the box indicated significant displeasure! I think the later electronic boxes in the D2 have a safety mechanism built in to prevent the box engaging the selected gear.
  7. Land Rover keep records of all serial numbers for chassis, engine, gearbox, transfer box and axle casings so those in theory should be able to be traced.
  8. 1) Yes shift while moving but obviously don't shift down to 1st at 70mph! 2) Just watch the rev counter to make sure the engine revs aren't too high. As a guide, maximum redline revs in each gear on mine is something of the order of 40mph in 1st, 70mph in 2nd, 100mph in 3rd but obviously you don't drive it anywhere near that
  9. Put it in gear and get somebody to see if the rear prop is spinning freely when you let the clutch out (or indeed the front one!) Assuming the rear is spinning, then the problem is in the axle. The most likely problem is that the splines are stripped on one of the rear halfshafts (common failure and tallies with the increased backlash) in which case you will need a new halfshaft and new drive member but the good news is that it is a roadside fix which takes 5 minutes and assuming you have steel wheels doesn't even need the wheel removing - undo the five drive member bolts, slide out the old halfshaft and member, shove the new one in and do the bolts up (not forgetting a gasket!). Change the other one too because it won't be far behind. To check if it is the halfshaft splines, take off both dust caps from the hubs (assuming you have steel wheels - not possible with alloys!) and try and drive it with somebody watching. If the splines are gone you will see the shaft spinning in the middle of the drive member so it is that side that needs changing. It should move in difflock or when the handbrake is applied because either option directs the drive to the front wheels. It may be the diff, unlikely if it is a Salisbury axle but possible if it is a post 2002 vehicle. If neither of the propshafts are spinning then it could be all sorts of things - clutch or gearbox mainshaft snapped but again those things are relatively unlikely on a Td5 age vehicle.
  10. You would use them to hold the gearbox in lower gears, for example when descending a hill off road to get more engine braking by forcing the gearbox to hold 1st gear, when towing a trailer or possibly when climbing a steep hill to hold it in a lower gear otherwise sometimes the bxo will shunt back and forth between two gears which can be tiresome. Using 2 for example, would allow the gearbox to use 1st and 2nd gear but would lock out 3/4 gears, while using 1 will lock it in 1st gear only.
  11. Nail on head. Nothing is more dangerous than "educational" videos made by "helpful" people who are doing something #kin dangerous or stupid, and making it look (to the uninitiated) like it is the way it should be done
  12. Sometimes it might be but usually it isn't! Reverse is usually somewhere between 1st and 2nd in ratio. Not sure about reverse being weaker - its true of older LT77 gearboxes I think but not sure about newer ones or something completely different like the D3 gearbox. Not a bunch of people I would choose to go anywhere with, that's for sure!
  13. I think you should sell it and buy a Toyota
  14. Corrosion on the ECU terminals is a likely cause then, maybe doing that cleaned up the connections a bit
  15. I didn't think 300Tdi Discofairys had a clutch damper? The 200Tdi Discovery did, and yes they do go - the crimping lets go and the pressure blows the back out of it leaving you with no clutch, happened to my old one, just needs to be changed and I think later ones were different (my old vehicle was a 1991 model).
  16. time the Euro emissions laws were shoved up the European tailpipe then stand behind a Discovery 3 and stand behind a Tdi Defender and you will feel just as ill just as quickly, it just smells different I still think JCB would have been a good owner
  17. leaks, squeaks, rattles.... Sorry, no sensible info to offer
  18. I got a Toshiba Equium a couple of years ago and have always thought Toshiba seemed to be among the best having owned/used a few over the years and never had any problems, not something I can say about cheap brands which I would avoid like the plague. Mine was about £600 from Currys, who seemed to have a better selection (at that time - big superstore I went to in Sussex) than PC World or any of the other computer shops!
  19. I heard the next generation Defender will have a little man with pedals under the bonnet and the throttle pedal will be connected to a sharp spike resting on his posterior. Mind you it/him/her will go wrong less often than a TdV6
  20. I've got a twin pump one on order from Bearmach but it won't be here until the new year.
  21. Sounds worth a go to me - I fondly remember my old 8274s tendency to give an involuntary manicure I assume you've got something that [snipped out to protect a cunning idea from Scrap Iron Spies]
  22. May be just the linkages seized or need adjustment
