  1. That's probably what we will end up doing if we don't come up with a better solution!
  2. Hi I know there's a few LPG converted thor cars on here - does anyone have any suggestions on where to mount the LPG 'spider'? We can't put it at the back of the head as that's where the coils are fitted, so wanted ideas from the experts Thanks Jon
  3. It looks like Cooper have stopped making that size ST Do you notice any more tramlining / bad road manners with the 285's compared to smaller tyres?
  4. The Gwyn Lewis standard sized HD one I've got in my 'pile of bits I really must get round to fitting someday' is approx 24cm from the underside of the top face to the bottom of the bottom face...
  5. I had a 42" light bar on my 90, it didn't suffer from reflections off the bonnet, but you probably wouldn't want to use it when snowing or similar... I've still got the one that came off my old 90 from the group buy on here a while back, along with a custom made low profile roof bar. I doubt I'll ever fit it to the 110. Drop me a PM if you are interested...
  6. I've also got the SPF locks on mine. Apparently they take the standard locks and file down the pins, so it's pot luck as to how well they work when re-keyed to the front half of the ignition key. A couple of mine work well, one you can open with any bit of metal approx the right size. If I was doing it again (and this is on the jobs board for the LR!) I'd remove / disconnect all of the lock barrels and rely on remote locking from the alarm, with the rear door as a keyed backup. I've already got the central locking so half the job is done, it just needs connecting up - but if you haven't you can get cheap remote locking kits from ebay for £30 or so.
  7. Hi All, I'm currently running BFG 255 85 16 MTs, but now as the 110 seems to spend most of it's time sitting on the motorway, I'm considering swapping for something a little more road friendly (I'm sick of the woowoowoowoo noise at 70mph, and a few extra MPG wouldn't hurt either!!) It looks like nobody makes ATs in the same size - which is a shame as I think the size really suits the car. The only other size I can see that's similar diameter is 285 75 16, with BFG ATs, but are these a bit wide compared? Anyone running them to be able to comment? Cheers Jon
  8. Hmm - sounds familiar... Guess I'll be pulling the cover off the bottom of mine this weekend then...
  9. Out of interest, is it a middle pitched whine it makes? Mine's started doing something similar recently - you can hear it over about 35mph, getting progressively louder the faster you get (wheel speed), and only when under power. The box was refurbed a couple of years back with bits from Ashcroft. It's always had a slight high pitched gear whine, but this is much lower pitched. One of the jobs for the weekend is to drain the oil and check it...
  10. I do find it fascinating that LR are determined to chuck the defender out, and build something which everyone thinks will be not in the 'spirit' of it's predecessors, while Jeep seems to be able to keep the 'soul' of the Wrangler, bring out a new model on a new platform and still keep it pretty similar to how it's always looked. They are even bringing out a double cab pickup version called the 'Scrambler': http://truckyeah.jalopnik.com/see-the-2018-jeep-scrambler-in-decent-detail-in-this-le-1798315106 I also think it's funny how they have a very girly reputation over here, when in reality they are comparable to what the Defender probably would have become had LR invested in keeping it updated - I had a 4 door wrangler as a hire car on holiday a few years back and it was actually very very good - more refined than a 110CSW petrol, drove nicely on road, went like stink compared (which it should with a 285BHP V6 in it!), and seemed to cope with off road situations OK (although being a responsible driver of hire cars I would never do this!)
  11. http://jalopnik.com/bollingers-200-mile-electric-truck-is-fantastically-rug-1797333580 Looks like they took many pages out of the series / defender book when they were designing this!!
  12. elbekko - many thanks, that's perfect. So it looks like we are on the right tracks - possibly if we lose the right hand idler the standard non-ac belt will fit... Cheers Jon
  13. Does anyone have any ideas on how a GEMS serp non-AC belt routing looks like? This is what we have come up with so far, but the GEMS non-AC belt appears to be the wrong length. I know we have an AC mount but no compressor, does that change the layout from a 'true' non AC setup?
  14. Just a bit of an update - sourced a GEMS alternator mount and the alternator seems to fit this OK - thanks for your help!
  15. A friend of mine just sent me this - I know prices for defenders are high in the US historically, but it looks like they are fetching serious money out there now! http://www.ksl.com/auto/listing/3758448 Very nice example though, but IMHO the roof needs to be black not grey as it looks a bit monotone.. And it needs a 4.6 with megasquirt, (or an LSx)!
  16. DAB coverage is OK round the south west - there's places where it'll drop out (inc. one section of the M4) if you aren't on the BBC mux though. One thing that's really annoying is that the bitrate for non-BBC channels is only 96kbit, compared to 128kbit for the BBC channels, which gives a noticeable drop in sound quality, even compared to FM
  17. Yeah, it's a bit of a bitsa engine It's built out of GEMS bits, but with a thor inlet - we put thor rockers on it so that you can get to the oil cap easily
  18. Great - thanks... Looks like I'm getting somewhere now
  19. Here's a pic of the front of the engine At the moment we've not figured out the belt routing - it looks like there's a couple of ways you can mount the idlers / tensioners that changes things. We don't have an AC compressor so will probably have to figure out the non AC serp routing. I bought a non AC belt, but it doesn't seem to work whichever way we try length wise...
  20. I didn't get a decent pic of the front of the engine, but the mounting holes are approx 158mm centre to centre across the front of the alternator bracket. Part number stamped on it is ERR6892 which appears to be a P38 / Disco 2 alternator bracket. As the bracket is 'flat' - am I missing an intermediate vertical bracket that goes between ERR6892 and the alternator fittings? https://auto-parts-lab.myshopify.com/products/land-rover-discovery-2-ii-alternator-tensioner-bracket-err6892-oem-2003-2007
  21. Hmm - thanks for that. The source engine was a GEMS, but it doesn't look the same. Next time I'm where the engine is I'll grab a pic of the bracket in situ as that will probably help!
  22. Hi All I'm trying to source the 'right' alternator for my 4.6 - I bought a second hand unit from here, but it looks like the mountings are wrong, with the lugs being too narrow for the cast carrier... The alternator is listed as a Denso A127i - 100 which google suggests is indeed for a Serp v8. Do I have the bracket for a later 150A Bosch alternator, which I understand have different fittings? Am I going to be better off changing the bracket than sourcing a Bosch alternator - are these ECU controller rather than an onboard reg? Cheers Jon
  23. Here you go. I *think* that the back hole was there already with one of the plastic push pin things the same as the other two in the pic, so I enlarged the hole, loosely bolted it up, sat in it, set the angle and drilled the other holes.
  24. I'm ideally looking for a pre-drilled manifold - there's one on ebay at the moment but the breaker selling it wants £100 for it, which seems very steep to me... Failing that I'll get a standard spare and get the drilled to make the swap easier
  25. I fitted mine a while back, but forgot about the thread There is a hole for one of the panel fixings there already, I used this as the rearmost hole, put it on at a comfy (to me!) angle and drilled the front two holes. I find it worthwhile, but I've got stumpy legs which don't reach the bulkhead!
