  1. I used a product called R.A.T mat in my 109. It's exactly the same as dynamat at a fraction of the price. 40sqft for $250NZD, which was only just short of doing the roof completely. I bought 2 kits and that did the rear bulkhead, drivers/passengers floor, all 3 doors and rear tub. It wouldn't be overly difficult to recreate it. You could buy a huge tub of CRC brush on underseal which is essentially bitumen (like treacle!). thin it, then super heat till It goes runny and pour it into a mould which is the same shape as the object You wanted to put it on. You would probably need to spray glue it on but it could be a go..? Just letting my creative mind loose I need to get out more!
  2. Thanks for that mikey! He did seem pretty pleased when he was talking about the lights. As far as I know, the truck is complete minus the motor, so fingers/toes/eyes crossed all the electrics are there
  3. Hey all, Whilst I was on my morning errand picking up some new purchases for my landy, I got chatting to the seller who (as it turned out) was an avid LR nut and owner of 3 series 1's. He told me he had an 1955 86" which he was considering selling when he has a clean up next year. Ive always had a bit of a soft spot for series 1's and I said I would be interested in having a look. The info I know without seeing it in the flesh: - Rust in bulkhead, has been stripped down, removed and waiting for new metal welding in. - No motor, had a non LR motor in it when he bought it so he pulled it out - Standard diffs, gearbox etc all in good nick - Solid chassis (That one surprised me!). Outrigger, dumb irons replaced professionally. He doesn't know what its worth, but I don't to rip him or myself off as it will obviously be a project. He told me that he bought a set of "Pork pie" lights for it. I don't really know what these are..? Obviously it will need a motor. Which 2.0L would this have had originally? Any well known issues with 86"? Parts availability? and lastly, what should I offer? Im going to see it at some stage before Christmas so I get some pics. He also told me that hes had parts of the truck sand blasted and painted but not sure where as I didn't ask. I'm thinking of joining the series 1 club as well. Hope someone can help! Josh
  4. It does sound a lot like an air leak. Hunting, mixture screw not having any effect and lumpy idle. Apologies if I'm teaching granny to suck eggs, but wd40 sprayed liberally around joints which meant to be airtight has always worked for me. If it revs up when you spray, your a winner! Josh
  5. I can't help with the lining side of things but in tes of seals, your far better off buying genuine seals. They may cost more, but they go in with a lot less tweaking than aftermarket! If there are small drafts, draft fill strips which are designed to go round windows in a house work well. I used them on my 109. Silicone (bathroom) works well on the join of the roof to the side panels. Hope that helps.
  6. If the starter is turning over slow then speeding up wouldn't that point to it drawing an excessive amount of current on the turn of the key? It might be worth checking the cables to the starter motor, all the earths around it as well as they could corroded to the point of excessive resistance. HTH Josh
  7. Mines in at the shop. I'm getting very bored with nothing to tinker with the garage! Spent $1200 NZ on mine. GF would be fairly unimpressed if she knew! Apparently she needs attention too!
  8. Agreed- DIY is Definitely a relative term. It's good to see people chucking up some ideas though. And it gives people insight to how easy/difficult they may be dependant on skill/confindence. Anyone has photos of their build ups etc would be cool to see how it was done. I will put mine up when the truck returns.
  9. Firstly, apologies if this has done to death. I have been scanning the forum and couldn't really find a lot of ideas on this particular topic in one thread so to speak, so I thought It would be cool to see everyone's ideas in one place. Anyway, I digress. As I spend another restless but boring evening sitting at home while the Stage 1 Is at the garage (amazing how much spare time you realise you have when the LR isn't home ) , I find myself thinking about what sort of DIY project style improvements everyone made/wanted to make on their beloved Series Landies, and some pics of such designs. I'm not talking about fitting parabolics or huge tyres etc, but more talking about such projects as Adam001's expedition defender roof console setup, and Steve200tdi's new dash addition and Discomikey's rear load bay hard cover. I enjoyed reading about those projects as I for one am a huge fan of additions that improve the practicality of what you use your LR for! I for one am building a drawer storage system for the load bay of my Stage 1 V8 for when I go camping (I will be sleeping in the truck). It consists of a drawer that runs the whole length of the space between the wheel boxes. It is halved, and a hinged lid which is sectionalised to be able to access both ends of the drawers while inside the truck, as well as creating a false floor section to bridge the gap between the wheel boxes for me to put a mattress on top of. It will be built out of ordinary timber and ply, which will be trimmed out in matching marine carpet to tie it in nicely with the rest of the interior. I hope to add some pics when the truck returns so I can begin to construct the system. So, what other ideas are out there? LR owners are a resourceful lot, and i'm hoping to see some great designs (and pics! ) for the benefits of others who may want to undertake some projects such as these! Josh
  10. Sounds a lot like the hubs aren't disengaging therefore winding up. Sometimes when I leave diff lock on in my stage 1 it will make that noise. The hubs may want stripping down and a good check over/clean. You may not find the cause, but it's always nice to clean the moving parts once in a while! Josh
  11. So, the garage called with some odd news. The starting and idle is nice and steady now, but when the truck gets loaded up in 2nd or higher with a footful applied, it misfires terribly and won't accelerate at all. The compression test came back good, and they checked the camshaft lift on the valves etc and its all fine. Is it still a fuelling issue? On light throttle the truck is fine. The dash pots are full, and the points, cap, leads, plugs were replaced. The rocker assemblies were also replaced due to having no oil flowing through at all and were worn out completely on the shafts. I'm so close to getting it sorted. I can't give up now! Josh
  12. Any loose belts on the engine will squeal, but I found that the belt on my runabout used a scream when I loaded up the electrics (AC, blower on, lights and stereo). Could be worth checking the belts for excessive deflection (how far you can push the belt with your finger)
  13. Agreed on both points! I too thought the compression theory was odd, but I think he was going on the assumption that it was doing the wierd stuff for ages (as I had forgotten to mention to him that it was laid up for a while and going well prior to that) so I can see where he may have been confused. After I told him that, he immediately told me that it was running so rich that the plugs were pretty much shot and he agreed that there's certainly something amiss with the fuelling system. He's just taken delivery of the stromberg special tools (as they were out on loan) so now they can start to get the service items changed and the mixture sorted, then we have a firm base to go on. In regards to the specialists, they have an excellent rep from people who I know have used them in the past, and the guy looking after my truck is conscious of blowing out costs so he is trying to keep time spent on the truck to a minimum so as not to blow my budget. I'm more than happy with them doing the work. I have both the S3 manual + V8 supplement as well as the haynes manual and a very nice multimeter but unfortunately I'm not much good at fine tuning items. I've recently sold my wee runabout so I have some spare funds and it made sense to me to get the specialists to look it over, that way the risk is on them IMO. Thanks for your help guys, I'll post up with what he says tomorrow when he calls me.
  14. Thanks Alan, great info! That'll keep me busy for a while
  15. Well, as of yesterday the LR specialists have my stage 1 in their workshop. I got a call yesterday from their series guru who had asked me if he could personally undertake the job when I rung up, just to give me a heads up on what his thoughts are regarding the trucks state. He said he took it for a drive, and got the same symptoms as me: Backfiring, poppling and hesitating. Then when he went to start it to drive into the workshop, it really didn't want to go. He has a suspicion that the engine is down on compression but will be performing a comp test to double check. He also informed me that the spark plugs are absolutely covered in soot and the engine is running massively rich, which I thought was the case in the first place. I would have thought, if the engine was low on compression it would have driven like that before I laid it up for a couple of months..? As it started and drove pretty well minus a few slow starts here and there. Surely laying it up wouldn't have accentuated the problem. I'm considering just biting the bullet and go for a replacement camshaft, uprated timing chain and gears and tappets. He is ringing me on Tuesday to give me the full report on the truck and then I can decide what to do from there. I would atleast want him to get the carbs balanced, get the mixture sorted and give it a bloody good service (Gen leads, dizzy cap, points, condenser, rotor arm, plugs, air +oil filter and oil change seeing as its there) and see where that leaves it.. V8 are fairly common in NZ but people still ask stupid prices for motors etc so I would be more inclined to get the current motor better before considering outsourcing! Any V8 gurus care to advise? The truck will cover some fair miles in 25-30 degrees during the summer so I ideally would like to be in good fettle! Josh
  16. Thanks Alan and don! Sometimes I really wish there was someone knowledgeable who lived down the road haha!
  17. I hope not alan! Do stuck valves free off with use? I'm calling the specialists on Tuesday to see if they've time to look over it and see whats going on first and foremost
  18. Damn... i'm back!! Left the carbs to drain for a few days and tried again with a little bit of new fuel. Started up no sweat! Ran a bit lumpy and smoky but evened out after revving it up a few times. Waited for it to get to temp, took it for a 50 metre drive and it was horrendous! Backfiring, hesitating and being very reluctant. Seems like the choke is stuck on, but the linkage etc are free of any jams, or stiff movement. I tried to reset the choke by slackening the nut on the carb off to release the cable, and re tightened it. Now the truck wont start again and I don't want to flood it again. Its 2 days away from losing its WOF and I desperately need it driveable + super reliable as it will soon become my sole daily driver, and long trip vehicle. I am very tempted to send it down to my local LR specialists! I'm guessing my carbs need balancing, choke definitely needs fine adjustment and it probably wants a good dose of new fuel plus a good drive. But I need to make sure its not going to spectacularly die on me! Dash pots are full, Ignition produces a nice fat blue spark so no probs there.. maybe timing as well? Any other suggestions that I should look out for? Josh
  19. I'm running 265/75/16 BFGs on disco steels on my stage 1 v8. No lift, standard everything else. Would love some slightly taller tyres (somewhere around an 85 series sidewall) but its really nice on the road and pretty good off road too!
  20. Pulled a couple of plugs last night. They are soaked in petrol and covered in hard black carbon. Time for new plugs I reckon. I'll check the spark tonight
  21. So I could have flooded it horribly? Would a tow-start in gear get it going?
  22. I'm not getting anything at all, just as if the plugs aren't even there. I'll check the coil/HTs etc and just make sure I haven't knocked anything
  23. Thread revival! Thought I would just keep posting up on this thread so I don't clog up the section too much. Still haven't sorted the diff lock light but the trucks been off the road getting a bit of a rebuild. The alternator died while driving one night which got me thinking I should sharpen the old girl up. So an order to paddocks, land rover parts NZ and an auto electrician visit ensued. It's been around a month since I last moved the truck, and in that time it's had very little fuel in it. I go to start it with 10L of fuel today and no joy. Full choke, cranked the bloody thing until the battery went flat! So, I changed the fuel filter (which in fairness looked as old as the truck itself!) and tried again after recharging the battery. Nada! Have i blocked the fuel lines with crud? Or is there something else I should consider? Josh
  24. I stopped caring about the next generation at the point at which twerk entered the OED... God I wish the forum had a like button for things like that
  25. This probably won't be related but I've noticed when people cut their exhausts to straight pipe them there's a lot more turbo noise and some do make the off throttle woosh quite loudly... Could be worth looking at your exhaust? Just to rule it out
