  1. Cheers guys! The vehicle has 68k on the clock, so problems aren't expected in the short term. I think I'll give it a go and see what happens!! Adrian
  2. I've bought myself a new toy! It's a very solid 92 3.9 Vogue SE auto Range Rover Classic with a few goodies on it. Mark came with me to look at it and expressed concern about the type of transer box it has... the high/low range gear lever only has 3 positions - high, neutral and low. The old E plate RR I'm used to had a manual diff lock that had to be selected. The Disco 2 that I drive has the same 3 position arrangement, but has traction control!! [simpleton mode]what does all this mean?? I've heard names and numbers flying around, be it Borg Warner, or whatever, but i've no idea what they all really mean!! Does this system run off of the ABS wheel sensors??[simpleton mode off/] What are the pitfalls of not having a 'manual' diff lock? Am I better off taking the box off of the old one and putting it on the new one?? What's the worst that could happen? I think Mark spoke to Chris - GBMUD - and came up with a suggestion that they 'fail solid'. Now, as far as we can work out, that means that if the system goes wrong it is locked in 4 wheel drive...but is still drivable?? Obviously assuming that it hasn't all disintegrated inside!! I know it's all a bit basic for some of you guys, but thought I'd better get a bit more background. What gearbox am I likely to have, too - 3.9EFi 4speed auto?? Any pointers gratefully received. Also, anyone who wants to write a brief description of how the system works will be rewarded with ample praise!! TIA Adrian
  3. Wonderful stuff!! Needs applying on both sides if possible and takes quite a bit of effort to get a smooth finish, but works well on punctured diff pans....
  4. Dave, that's the route I'm planning to take in the long run, but am just wondering if I'd get really p###ed off with it in the mean time??!! Everything with a 200 in it already seems to either be as bad as Mark's was or out of my price band at the moment!!
  5. I do, of course, have the 3.5 out of the RR to play with, so it could be an option in the short term........ I don't mind revving things - I had a 1.4 Fiesta as a courtesy car not too long ago and that got revved......
  6. I know this is probably better in the Disco forum, but I'm hopefully going to look at one tomorrow, so need a few quick responses... What are they really like off-road?? I know they're a little under powered for everyday use, but once they are in low range and trugging along, they can't be too awful - can they?? The aim is to get myself a solid car as the RRC is unlikely to pass another MoT and this sounds like a good example and seems like a good place to start. Later to add a better engine.... Anyone with some experience of them??? TIA Adrian
  7. I'm a little more intrigued by the fact that he says it's a good runner once it's warmed up, yet there is a tow rope attached........ Still, nice use for a bit of spare interior waste pipe!
  8. Cheers Dale, most enlightening! Anyone know what gearbox/transfer box arrangement is likely to be fitted to a 1986 one? Cheers Adrian
  9. Had a funny feeling that might be the case!!!
  10. I am off to look at a 3.5 carbed 3dr RR on Saturday and wondered if anyone can shed some light on some of the more annoying/awkward places that are likely to be infested by the dreaded tin worm? I'll be looking closely at the chassis, rear body crossmember and the inner wings and arches, but where else is likely to have gone to pot?? TIA Adrian
  11. It's just the flash of the camera!! It really isn't that clean!!!
  12. I have used a guy locally for some powder coating, but I only know him as Steve or coffeeboy from the Kent Off Road Club. You can try their website, if you like... It's here!! I don't know if you can view the forum without registering, but have a look in the Services offered section right at the bottom and you'll find a powdercoating thread! HTH..... Adrian
  13. 2 air-con units blown off the roof here in Chatham!! Assorted branches lying aroung the car parks too! Nice refreshing breeze............
  14. I think that the new computerised MoTs will kick up a fuss about that once you are on your second one. Not so bad first time round, but it's a lot easier for the system to throw a fail at you! Just a guess at the moment, but I think that's the way it'll work.........unfortunately!!
  15. When you think about it, though, 3-4 years is about the life expectancy of a new car..........isn't it??? As the Ford saying goes: Designed for living - engineered to last 3 years!!!
  16. I've had exactly the same problem! Even after about half an hour of heating each one up they still didn't budge!! I only wanted them out to put some JATE rings on for rear recovery points, so the easy solution was to copy the tube and plate design and make up some new ones further back on the chassis. I badgered the tame welder to get them stuck on and Robert's your mothers brother!
  17. Plenty of space to wander round and not get too muddy! As for being allowed, i'm not sure what the regs are.......
  18. I could be interested, too. Got the EP9 ready to run - just need an MoT to be able to get there! ! Otherwise, i'll be along in the Disco to spectate cos it sounds like fun!!
  19. Sounds like you need to find a local pub with a ford next to it!! She can be busy eating, drinking and watching out of the window (or beer garden in the summer) and you can amuse the local kids to your hearts content!!
  20. I'm guessing, then, that as I have the 18" alloys, it's not going to get any better!! Or is it a case of changing the stops and tweaking them to the best possible?? I am, of course, assuming that they can be adjusted...........
  21. They've been using them over here in Kent and all round the M25, M1, M11 for quite some time now - mainly in roadworks! I've always wondered whether they actually work, but obviously they do!! Time to buy a series - no chance of speeding then!!!
  22. Post it up when you know it!! I could use the info too.... Cheers Adrian
  23. Don't fall for it!!! He's just trying to scrape enough money together to buy another roller from B&Q to touch up the paintwork!!! I too have used Thunderpole and been very impressed with prices and speed of delivery! Top company.
  24. To echo Chris' comments about rotating the casing....that's what we had to do to fit a 3.9 (offside mounted) alternator onto our 3.5 (nearside mounted) bracketry!
  25. Cheers, Nige and Jim! Mine will be the same as yours (Nige) - ABS on a non ABS axle! Sorted!
