  1. On Detroits its not one wheel drive it drives both wheels but allows the outside to overrun which means the inside wheel or the slowest which can give mild understeer feeling is quite ok if your used to it. having one side always driving is never a good idea unless you always want to turn right and not left
  2. If anyone wants to swap 2 useble decent series swivel balls std I would happily swap for 2 usable defender front stub axles that I'll happily machine down the inner as per my one to fit a std series swivel housing. I kind of stopped playing as the swivel ball I have is FUbar and seems pointless mocking up on a rubbish swivel. Wasn't impressed with a mates new britpart swivel ball so want to avoid them. There is also issues with kingpin being where the CV wants to be but I think I have this sussed and will be slightly stronger. I actualy have all the bits here now all new bits except the swivel balls. I was hoping to get to the shows this year but new baby means I've run out of time.
  3. I've done similar I have the Stub machined to fit the swivel housing. I have fitted the Defender CV into the chrome ball but am currenty shimming the CV to get the joint in line with the steering as the ball is larger the CV needs to sit further in to make the joint pivot in the right place. I have had quotes for custom shafts. they will take 6 weeks to come in 300m material. No warranty however the guy dd say you wont break them. they wasn't cheap about £200 ea but if we get a batch made then will be a bit cheaper. I want a couple of sets. once the CV's are in the right position then I have a spare axle case to cut up and make some dummy shafts the exact length as patterns to send off.
  4. Ok my 90 is an old wreck been used off road and competitions for the last 11 years but its time to be serious. The 90 is getting kitted out for being a tow support vehicle for a trials landy tools and roof tent for the longer weekend comps. I've picked up second hand two side storage lockers for above the wheel boxes that were originally from mobie storage soloutions. I have a 2 draw pull out for the rear load space being fabricated to my drawing in a local metal shop should be ready for me to weld up and fit runners to. That lot will take care of most the tools. I'm on the hunt for a decentish budget Fridge. Ideally 3 way mains gas and 12vdc. I have no use yet to go to the sahara but likewise I don't want a cheap and nasty Ebay special for £29. Any opinions would be appreciated I'd prefer a flat sided item than can be made to fit on top of the draws and strap or bolt up against the bulkhead. I have 12v power on the side i want t mount the fridge and will hook up the caravan socket to a 230V electric in the rear for use when on mains. I hope to run a kenlowe hot start from mains and also a decent 230v to 12V 40-50A transformer so I can keep the heater running and keep warm when hooked up to mains. Its a shame the 90 isn't tidier but Its had a life already and I cannot really fault it. I do have a bulkhead coming to repair and get galvanised over the next couple of years in between other jobs and some money for a chassis at some point. J
  5. Ah cheers Nige in after the olde type. Will keep an eye out
  6. Don't look like torsion T1 I've ever seen. Mc namera didn't he make all sorts
  7. Nige do you still have the short shaft for sale? Is it for a rangy 10 spline hub? or later 300 hub?
  8. I think I remember most of the mods he did was a complete blue printed engine. A fair bit of work on the block, lots of head work, real steel viper or typhoon cam loads of time machining and with more knowledge gained since, like valve seat angles, induction mods and Megasquirt it could a serious Standard class Comp Safari vehicle/engine. Alas the rolling road sessions are where you need to spend the £££ and now the local place has long been gone I wouldn't know where to go. I was up helping to lay out the comp safari course or the Sunday and the driveround for the shiny motors on the Sat at Devils pit couple of weekends ago. I had to fatten some undergrowth. First time my old 200 tdi was driven in high range semi aggressively above half throttle anyway offroad seemed to take off ok for a heavy (loaded with tools) old beast landing seemed rather painful tho. Really need to build something in the next 5 years sad to say I fancy an 88 inch V8 comp safari motor on leaf springs EEK!
  9. Chicken Drumstick, My bro built a 3.5 rover v8 rolling road tested at 212BHP with the twin SU carb setup. Not bad considering each carb really is limited to 110BHP each by assuming all else is perfect as it can only flow so much. It took weeks of Rolling road sessions to get the correct needles Serious stupid low down grunt power. It would drop down when loaded to 430RPM and never stall Pull hard from there. I drove it around a field (I was 15) and you could literally not stall it in 2nd or 3rd gear dumping the clutch. Good in the F reg 90 up to about 75-80 Mph. That Engine is now in Andrew F Anglian LRC trailer now although probably making a lot less BHP now its EFI and not really setup or matched at all. It wasn't cheap to build but it wasn't stupid Cost either. This was 20 years ago and its still going strong! Its about getting the ingredients right, a matched setup and plenty of rolling road sessions to get the carbs set right. I'm trying to convince him to do another the next camshaft up and EFI Megasquirt as I think it would be a beast in a lightweight trialler probably half the weight of a 90. Cost wise would cost the same really but plenty of garage time. Maybe if I had that engine in my 90 I would have got up that step at the nationals that only a couple of people managed!! J
  10. Steve Parker does the correct sensor with matched resistance values to match old guage and the correct fine or coarse thread depending on which type you reqire L
  11. V8's driven normally are very easy on gearboxes how often do you change gear in a good v8? How many times do you change gear in a tdi?? Lots!! A decent freshly built gearbox with quality parts should be fine I would have thought. If they're failing soon then there must be an issue
  12. My bro might be interested in rebuilding it will ask he is ex LR tech built many a series box J
  13. can you put a link up for Kams stage 1 shafts?? I cannot see them on their website
  14. Tyres have gone £££ in price gone are the days of £44 205 Kingpin remoulds! My BFG KM2's were £150 ea But they will last 10 years probably more as I don't do the mileage now days Then again I don't fancy wrecking one trialling so I'm trying to get some Diamonds sorted which I thought I managed but the guy on Ebay isnt playing ball
  15. I have a lock right diff lock that I will part with and happily ship to Spain given the right offer. Currently in my 90 4.7:1 series ratio.
  16. Disco Ron Not sure about the op as that is best and easiest answer really and they're only £34 ea. Personally I love the look of landy rims anything else to me just looks cheap/wrong and aftermarket. I especially like rostyle pattern I mean for trialling or comps they're pants you have to take the wheel off to change a halfshaft. But the effort involved will be worth it for me because they weigh very little compared to other rims are narrow and look right on an older trials motor. But the sensible man just buys them off the shelf done and dusted I've never been accused of being sensible! J
  17. I'll be using RRC rostyles and getting close to max offset ALRC regs on narrow 6.5 rims however not tubless. But it's not an issue really as for trials tubed is the way especially crossing ruts on full lock.
  18. Chicken drumstick Do you mind having disco steels at 7 inch wide?? If not you an spin he centres from disco rims quite easy and get 4 inch from naive plate to outer rim as per ALRC regs
  19. I know drain pipe is very close outside dia, so I'm guessing 70mm that's for the older 90's pre defender. Ive often wondered if series extended necks would fit the pre defenders
  20. Lol Mo the thin sold ones are weak weak wee things older tubed are way stronger and the way forward!! P.s I dare you to paint them orange!! Or fit brightly coloured uprated bushes!! If you need bushes pressed in, your more than welcome to pop over use the press and press tools we knocked up to press them in. J
  21. Cheers guys. Very much on my todo list. I think it would have to be a self planned thing I've never seen any WWII stuff in France, only Germany Czech and Holland. Would be good to get over there. much appreciate the info and places to visit. I've bookmarked this page New tyres this afternoon one step towards a normal 90 again!
  22. Cheers mud magnet sounds great however I'm usually against paying someone for tours especially UK greenlanes but it's probably worthwhile as they know the law and all the little bits where you could find yourself in a lot of trouble Cheers
