  1. cable ties are god!!! what did we do before they were invented
  2. he he, but there's a certain pleasure with fettling alloy would that be the Disco engine?
  3. dunno how the snow was 1000 yards on your side of the valley but it didn't stop me riding the BMW to work pop in and I'll show you the latest!
  4. After looking at the sorryful alternator that came with my 2.5NAD engine, I decided to kick it to one side and do the same as TT Rovers and fit a Mondeo alternator. As most people know, if you want an official Land Rover 100Amp alternator or something like that you are paying big-bucks, however I don't fancy that as alternators tend to fill with mud and die when you least want them. The mondeo alternator on the other hand, is 90Amps and as being mass produced can be brought at half the price or for pitance from your local scrap yard with a wreaked mondeo. £15 later (£12.50 being the P&P!) off ebay, I had a second hand alternator in working order, I initially measured-up the old alternator, figuring out the PCD of the mounting and tension holes and the distance from the pivot to the tensioner et cetera. I then measured up the mondeo alternator, doing the same thing but over-layed the two on a CAD package (AutoCAD 2000) and got the general idea of how it could be done. The main problem with this conversion is mounting, the land rover alternator unless you have a 200TDi from a Disco or certain Rover V8's, is that the alternator tends to be mounted on the "nearside", while on the mondeo it is mounted on the "offside". This means the tensioner bolt points are 120 degrees "out" from one engine to another. To get around this I followed the TT Rovers method of a "C" bracket wrapped around the mondeo alternator from the lower engine mounting point, to the original mondeo tensioning hole to mount the plate at it's second point, and then further wrapping around to a point close to that where the original land rover point was for the tensioner blade. Initially my dimensions came out with some reasonably round numbers from a common datum, but a discussion with my Chief Project Designer at work pointed it out that actually all these holes are spaced at 120 degrees due to most alternators having three bolts so that the case may be removed on one side, rotated 120 degrees and then bolted back-up, thereby giving you your left-to-right-hand engine conversion. After some quick changes, I came up with the following design: PDF CAD Drawing I then got on to my friend today to see if he had any material, but only 1/4" alloy was available, oh well that'll have to do!, so I knocked it up as follows at his company workshops: SEB engineering in Fordingbridge, Hants also helped by lending me their bandsaw to cut the item out initially. After two 10mmOD/8mmID spacers were made to fill the lower mounts (as the Series uses 5/16" UNF bolts, while the mondeo used M10 bolts), I had the following: should have it fitted Sunday to see about the tensioner blade being right et cetera
  5. well happy birthday anyway since the time has finally arrived, postman shood be arriving soon with your bus pass
  6. that'll be because we set the "standard" for the industrialised world, such as the Whitworth form, absorbtion of metric/imperial hybrids (BA threadform), standardisation of practices (Design symbology, notations), et cetera
  7. well I'm 23 and I listened to the last of it earlier, so not sure whether that's a datum to base it on
  8. I suppose if a door or two had of been open and the draft was right, the vented gas could have blown into the car thereby causing the problem
  9. sorry! with all these defender bonnets and front ends I get confused what is what
  10. Would this be a dealership in Swindon? no names needed but it'll give people an idea of the sort of area to be cautious of in the future
  11. he he, 25 working days to go
  12. done THREE I thought Ash and Mike and himself
  13. M6 x 1.5mm? M6 course is 1mm pitch (5mm dia tapping drill (Zeus guide)) Lets see <checks site on net> M6 fine I have as 0.75mm pitch, metric special doesn't cover M6 from what I can find, however lets see what there is as 1/4 x 17 TPI.... nope you got me beat
  14. Ok, no reply in the Series forum, so I'll try here
  15. Would that be the metric or the imperial threaded item (cotter pin or screw retention of the reservoir)? Can't find my receipt at this moment in time
  16. good lad if he wants a challenge he could always buy another of Brookies finest 109 FFR's two-tone shed on wheel's
  17. Dan and Jen were meant to be buying one
  18. Another possibility maybe Ottons in Salisbury since they also deal with the Southern Salisbury Plain MIL vehicles
  19. A good selection of AF and Metric Tools would be the first thing, preferably 1/2" drive sockets, means then you don't have to pee around with size-adapters when torquing down items. Good selection of loctite as well is always good (601 retainer, 270 thread lock et cetera) Oh yeah, and a thread gauge to figure whether you have a 3/8 UNF/UNC or a M8 Course bolt when taking stuff out and thinking of replacing it
  20. just found this piccie: opps on the defender front!
  21. As I wanted a CB for when off with other people travelling, I decided to knocked-up a base to mount on top of a TUAAM arm on the military rovers: it follows the standard six hole pattern, I've fitted three bolts for the moment as I had some spare 1/4 BSF hex set screws in stainless, but not enough aerotight lock nuts in stainless: one of the holes has had the powder coat stripped-back on the arm and PR5A anti-corrosion compound put between the washer and the TUAAM arm to aid bonding, I'll be adding a proper sheathed woven bonding lead from another screw that I fit and take that down to the chassis to try and maximise the grounding. Dimensions for the disc as follows: When I have a PDF of the proper drawing pack, I'll post a link up! Suspect I'll get moaned at from the military rover people for having something shinny on there, but it's ALLOY <cough> and it helps to slow the corrosion process
  22. shan't be forgetting the camera in just over a weeks time, trip out to Galileo Avionica in Italy for two days discussing contractual issues, suspect the usual dinner in a restuarant on the high street with views
  23. yeah, SAAB Linkoping for "that" aircraft job been some politics recently but awaiting to see what happens further up the chain of management. He wouldn't enjoy it this time of year, they're all be wrapped-up and very little on display in the main high street at night
  24. Yup, saw Mike Wake had had his bicycle "borrowed" at work so decided to post the message about a bit and see what came out of it. Other than that not looking at any other forums as too busy trying to get drawing packs out and finalise the design before the next business trip out to Italy or Sweden (fingers crossed)
  25. One thing I know at RAF Boscombe Down, we only tend to fly bombers and other small stuff, but when a VC10 (passenger/transport/re-fueling aircraft) comes in, every single fuel bowser on site has to be fueled to re-fuel the things had one in for flight refueling trials so it did a few trips out, kept the tanker pool busy all week! think what the likes of Gatwick must get through.......
