  1. Probably bigger than you are looking for, but ex-utilities backup generateors can be had for sensible cash, and they have very little hours on them. Often they are diesel too, so you can run them on red... We have a 20kVA 3phase one that came out of a telephone exchange, that we use to run our bus lifts, and the welder has never bothered it. As I say, bigger in all ways than what you are looking for, but may be a good direction to look... hth Mark

  3. Thanks Jules, I give them a call. Any clues as to who makes the cages you mentioned, or are they mostly bespoke? I couldn't see anything on the SD site, and the P&P site only only covers defenders discoveries and a rangie... I saw a (blue?) racer at donnington which had a full internal cage, and I would really like a picture of that... Cheers Mark

  6. Simon, Check the freelanders towing capacity... i think that will probably rule it out to start with... In your position I would see if you can aquire a japanese import discovery. They tend to be a lot less rusty, lower mileage and automatic, which would be ideal for dragging a heavy trailer around. They do however tend to be dearer to purchase straight off though. alternately, early td5 disco 2's may be in your price range too. just my 2p Mark

  8. Quick question... I need to helicoil one of the head bolt threads on the block of my 200tdi. I know the studs are M12, but I have 3 choices of pitch - 1.25, 1.5 and 1.75 mm. Does anyone know, definitively the pitch of the thread on a head bolt? I don't have any available to check, otherwise I would, but I want to make sure I've got the bits before I tear the engine it apart... Cheers Mark
  9. Essentially it should be the same as double de clutching - clutch down, into neutral, clutch up to let engine and gearbox speeds equalise*, clutch down, into high range, clutch up. I don't think I would try it above 10 mph though.... * people above have mentioned revving the engine at this stage. That is only really neccessary when you are going down gears. goung up gears (as in low range to high range) you shouldn't need to revv it, just wait till the revs die off slightly, and feel the gear lever in. If you want some practice, you can come and try my series 2a for a while... that requires it on all the gears! Mark
  10. Right, I am starting to make very slow progress with this project.... Have sourced a Freelander shell, and am starting to strip the discovery body off the car. Before I get into it properly, I need to put the rest of the walls on my workshop, and rebuild my trailer, so progress won't be lightening fast... I will probably start another thread when I actually have something to show for it... Any more input from people gladly accepted. Cheers Mark
  11. I think original series chassis tolerance was specified as 1 acre... that is, longitudinally +/- 1/2 a furlong, and laterally +/- 1/2 a chain gives you a target area of 1 acre.....
  12. Spring Over Axle - normally the axle sits on top of the spring, and soa conversion gives a lift by fitting the sping under the axle.
  13. Why would a missing propshaft fail an MoT? The MoT is testing for safety rather than mechanical completeness, there is no reason for them to fail it, even if you left the front axle intact. I believe there are quite a few freelanders driving about these days with no rear propshaft, with no issue - the afore mentioned fridgefreezer is one that I know of....
  14. PCD = Pitch Circle Diameter Essentially, the size of the circle that the wheel stud holes are arranged in is different - larger on a D2 I believe.
  15. Does anyone have any pictures of Cage installs on a freelander 1 - specifically a 3 door one, but pictures of the a 5 door would still be interesting... equallly, if anyone knows of any prefab cages to fit a 3 door, I would be interested. Cheers Mark
  16. I had all of the above (except the 2.8 conversion) in my 2286 petrol lightweight. It also had the ashcroft high ratio transfer gears, an LPG conversion and parabollics on 235/85/16 Tyres. It is now owned by Steve_M who is a member of the shires club, as well as posting on here occasionally. Is it worth it? Well, I bought the truck with all of that done, and I saw the bills for it.... it's certainly not something I would have wanted to pay for However, it made the truck very interesting to drive - it was quite quick, although the power was all at the top end. Throttle control was somewhat digital - all on or all off... For off road there was not enough control, and it was too revvy really, but it was an absolute laugh to drive on the road! fuel consumption was well into v8 territory on gas - 16-18 mpg - but then I tended to drive it somewhat enthusiastically. hth Mark
  17. If it is only going to be a road toy, then why bother with drive to the front axle? You could solve most of your prop length problems by fitting a conventional gearbox, and forgetting about the transfer box altogether... just a thought Mark

  20. Ah, you found some more info on the motor then Si? cool... Have you tapped Mike up for info on the Socket? I have spent quite some time recently reading the site linked to at the top of this thread - there is all sorts of interesting stuff on there...
  21. Same as Mr Orange - have had a joint RAC account for a number of years, and have European cover on it now too. Can't remember if we have home start or not - it's not really a concern for me, more for the mrs. RAC covers the driver, not the car, so it's useful if you drive several different cars - several I looked at only cover the car. Have used them a few times in the last few years, not always Land Rover related, and they have been fairly fast and efficient. can't really complain, and will be renewing. Cheers Mark
  22. Nick is running Land Cruiser axles, with cruiser diffs etc... so I would hazard a guess that these won't fit anything that cam out of solihull...
