Green200tdi
my 200 TDI engine out of a disco it has what seems like a loud tapping on tick over and gets faster the more you rev it, have changed the valve stem caps and adjusted the gaps but the engine seems tappy still, i noticed if you put a long screw driver with your ear to end of it to top of thermostat housing the tap is most loudest there any ideas? should really come on here more often Edited January 16, 2017 by roverv8
Maverik
Have you been underneath it with the engine running and listed to the bottom of the sump?
Orgasmic Farmer
What is the betting it is the head gasket blown at the back. The noise is the compression gasses chuffing out at the rear of the engine. If you are lucky it may just be the manifold gasket but the head Gasket path at the back is very common and sounds like you describe
Les Henson
200TDi engines have a tendency to blow from No4 cylinder to the bulkhead. Put your hand down the back of the engine while it's running and you'll feel it if the gasket has gone this way. A leaking exhaust manifold gasket makes what seems like a clicking noise. Les. Green200tdi
thank you but would it not loose power and water if leak on gasket????

Les Henson
There's only compression loss usually. Effect on engine power depends on how badly the gasket has blown, but generally it's not noticeable. Les
Orgasmic Farmer
Yep, last one I did had no water loss, it is just gas to air. And to be fair it was losing very little power too. The bloke had been driving it for several thousand miles with it chuffing to the extent it needed a fair bit of a skim as the gases had gouged a groove in the head. Green200tdi
well been out and had a look this morning held the fan and had a feel round the back by bulk head manifolds front all seems ok i suspect somthing in timing cover but we will see
honitonhobbit
Also worth taking off the oil filler cap whilst it's on tick over. It's relatively common for the 200 to blow the gasket to the oil way between 2 and 3 or 3 and 4. Thi spressurises the oil to an entertaining and messy level
Green200tdi
so if rocker cover removed lots of oil pressure in there would blow ot all over the engine bay? Edited January 19, 2017 by roverv8
honitonhobbit
Pretty much - not like Vesuvius, but I'd have a rag in my left hand and undo the oil cap with my right

Les. 300 even more so. It sounds like someone flicking a sheet of paper with their finger, and doesn't show any fluid loss or contamination. Performance loss is negligible, but it will eventually cause gas erosion of the head, needing a skim if caught soon enough and a new head if not. Green200tdi
only pumps oil all over the engine bay when rocker cover is removed, had filler cap off this morning engine running all seems ok nothing come out so guess wait till timing cover comes off (doing timing belt as no history or millage to this engine) timing kit turned up this morning will keep you lot updated
Green200tdi
as said sounds like a tapping gets faster with engine speed will keep it in mind tho thank you
Tractorman
The brake vacuum pump gives a good knock when its on its way out, would get faster with engine speed
Ex Member
Count the rate of the tapping and compare to engine rpm. If you can figure out the frequency, it reduces the possible sources.
miketomcat
I had a timing belt idler bearing cracking the timing chest this caused a tapping noise at the front of the engine. When I removed the cover there was a witness Mark on it from the bearing tapping the cover. The down side is its difficult and expensive to get and replace the timing chest.
