Popular Post Peaklander
I’ll add a few pics in here when I can, to give a little idea of our current trip. (1996 110 300TDi) We are 3.5 weeks out and have travelled through Holland, Germany, Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Montenegro and Albania and we are now in Greece. Last night we had an elevated wild camp, high in the middle of the Peloponnese, with a great sunrise.
Popular Post Peaklander
This is Theth in the mountains of northern Albania. The road over was recently surfaced and widened. Last time we came, in 2015, it wasn’t and we bottled it because of the dropoff to the side. (First trip in the 110).
Popular Post Peaklander
We used the Vršič Pass again, south from Kranjska Gora. It’s tight on the cobbled hairpins. Also more popular than last time. Had a good chat with these guys in their 3.9 V8 Westfields.

Peaklander
They are great looking cars and sounded beautiful. I wouldn’t want to be driving back north from the Tunnel though, as they were. Just a bit low down for the motorways. We gave them a bit of direction over which route to take back through to Austria. I didn’t recommend the Grossglockner Hochalpenstrasse. We had done it the evening before but it is pricey €40 or so for the toll and really you need to do the side road up to the glacier viewpoint. That makes it a long ‘traverse’ that consumes time and it closes at 20:00 each evening. There’s a great campsite on the south side at Heiligenblut.

Peaklander
On the Peloponnese, we drove up into the Taygetos mountain range, to repeat a road that we first drove in this Landy about 8 years ago. We didn’t see anyone on the easy gravel for several hours. Unfortunately, just before reaching the tarmac going east, which we didn’t want, the steep road down to the south west, that we did want, was closed. The sign says ‘roadworks’ and as far as we could see with binoculars it was clear but after some discussion we turned around. that meant retracing our steps. It was a nice day though.

Peaklander
There’s quite a museum in the village. The owner of a vineyard/winery has assembled these. Some are his and some are on loan. Chopped Merc is his desk.

Popular Post Peaklander
Well that was just over 5,000 miles and 28.5 mpg (9.9 litres per 100km). 42 nights camping in the Landy and one each way on the ferry. Nothing bad happened. I lost a new wiper blade on the M18 on day 1, a Roamerdrive leak was fixed on day 3 and the rear wiper stopped on the penultimate day. It was a sticky brush but I didn't look until after the trip (today). There are a couple of small water leaks to inside, during the heaviest rain and only when the vehicle is at slightly the wrong angle. One dodgy USB outlet which has been in use for six years. I'll replace with a type C. It has been great having power front windows. The clunk in the drivetrain is somewhere around the R380 but I will check once more. Engine oil use is a bit strange. First of all I think that the dipstick level is very dependant on how the vehicle is sitting. I have topped up with 4 litres but it is a little overfull. I think the last top-up was done in a hurry and there is probably 0.5 more than there should be. The discussion about what to do about that and the clunk, will be in my vehicle thread. The borders were a surprise. Schengen no longer means free movement. The lorry queues into Bulgaria (EU but not Schengen) from Greece and into Croatia from Serbia were huge but also there was a temporary border check from Slovenia into Austria (but not at the border, further inside Austria). It took two hours in the car queue to cross into Croatia having taken 20mins to leave Serbia. Here's the route out and back, taken from the vehicle tracker. The colours are roughly the different driving days. It was a great trip. Daylight is a bit short in October but the sea is at it's warmest.
