Chipped 07MY defender

From looking through the various mags its seems on first look that the 2.4 is harder to chip than the td5 (although granted the td5 has been aroudn ages so companies ahve ahd longer to work on it)

has anyone on here chipped theirs yet or looking into doing it.

IIRC to get any decent gain ie around 35bhp or more you are looking lpg injection and stupid ££££

i understood it was different to the transit application with fuel maps etc.

£499 for a superchips upgrade seems quite alot anyway for the gains shown.

On another note while you're on have you heard any more about DanielTD5's gearbox problems??

I haven't,, But have heard another one stuck in reverse !!!

Back O/T, I am thinking about it, a new system, just gone on a 110XS demo at a dealers, and being rollered next week to see what gains they have made, i have not driven it yet, but according to feedback, a vast improvement !!

Yes it would - LR publish a technical bulletin on the subject of "power upgrades". Chipping or otherwise fiddling with the power output of any of the engines is an instant warranty killer.

If the dealer noticed that is....

Some of the remaps around are undetectable to the dealers - as per Td5 applications - as simply a modified version of the original file.

However, that's not to say a dealer won't apply the latest files - thus overwriting the 'tuned' map.

A dealer can not tell the difference between a remapped file and a standard one!! - unless they suddenly have access to a lot of other kit!!!

A Trans'fender ECU is different internally to a Transit - and remapping it is not the same.

My local dealer sells/sold the "powerlink" box over under the counter for the Td5's, and still honoured the full warranty on them.

Also, similarly, where i got my shogun from, they sell a similar type of box that brings the power from 158bhp to 170 (although they don't do it for my engine... :(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(

Well all I can say is that if they got caught they would get a kick up the arris from LR.

Land Rover do know that this goes on....

I remember a story through work about a customer who had bought an ex-demo Defender or Disco from a dealer that I think supplied the PSI boxes (that was there first mistake lol!!)...

After he'd bought it, it had quite a few problems and needed quite a bit of warranty work...

For some reason it ended up going back to Land Rover to be fixed, and they found that the loom had be modified - as the cheaper boxes come with blue scotch locks (obviously a quality product!!), it then transpired that the dealer had been selling these daft plug in things.

AFAIK Land Rover refused to pay all warranty costs on the vehicle (and probably checked on warranty claims for other vehicles), and charged the dealer for the time the vehicle was at Land Rover.

I've had my 07 golf gti remapped @ REVO. along with a turbo back s/s exhaust system.the map can be turned off via the OBD port for servicing.

EVERY turbo'd vehicle should be done :D

Warrenty issues, of which i've had none B) ,my dealers cool about due to the fact he's had £70k worth of business out of the company over the last few years.

A similar system will be along for the duratec engine as they are more sofisticated than the td5 style ecu's.

A decent remap will be undetectable by the LR software as it's all re written in new code.Dealer software upgrades are covered,in my case, as the map can be reflashed after the dealers done his bit.

Hi All,

Has anyone had experience in chipping the 2.2 Puma engine as fitted to 2013 Defender?

I'm keen to chip mine and interested in others recommendations.

Dear JST,

Go to any one of the recognised Land Rover tuners, Alive, B.A.S, IRB, Twisted, J J Fearn etc.

You will need to have the ECU plugged in and the map sorted and depending on the power blah, blah, blah a boost box to stop it going into limp home mode.

On top of that to get the best out of the chip you would need a larger inter cooler, something done to the exhaust, straight through minimum with a decat pipe and of course the EGR removed.

What ever you do and it won't be cheap. Anything from £400 upwards for a chip plus the other bits to see any substantial power gains.

The lot would be somewhere near a grand to see good power gains.

I did my TD5 over a period of time (kids and all that) starting with the EGR, free flow air filter and exhaust.

Then the intercooler and boost box.

Next will be the chip and remap.

I've no experience of any of the above listed LR specialist tuning companies, but you are very dependant on the skill of the person who did the original remapping (of the original vehicle for which the map for every other is based) - there are plenty of cowboys about who don't really know what they are doing, which can result in severe engine damage...

Do plenty of research and look for independant third party opinions before you make a choice. A 'crappy' remap will just wind the boost up which would take the mapper a few minutes, a decent one will have tens of hours of tuning the fuelling across the whole rev range, as well as increases to the boost pressure to give the best results, and will retain the safeguards & safety margins that LR put in as every engine is slightly different...

Also don't necessarily be swayed by claims of huge power increases - especially on something like a LR, low and midrange drivability is more important than peak power at the rev limiter...
