Martin90
We have spies everywhere! It certainly is a small world, there's a guy on lro with a lightweight who lives just off houghton lane too! Didn't want to disturb you and besides, it was peeing it down, I was wet and muddy, and wanted to get home for a nice hot shower! I've got a mint bonnet here which I think is the same colour as yours, is it shire blue? You can always check it for fit when you're feeling a bit better. I was rear ended as I left billing a couple of years ago, it really shook me up. Hope you are feeling a bit brighter soon. Martin
Graham Thomson
Martin, I might well take you up on your offer......out of interest does it have reinforcing struts down the middle of the inside of the bonnet (im trying to identify the exact bonnet type)? And is it chequer-plate free.....and is it spare wheel mount free? In any event, the car will be away for a couple of weeks I'm sure, so it will be after then. And mine is shire blue, so it does sound ideal

GBMUD
Well, I am glad you are all-right after that, something similar hapened to me last year. HERE Having read all that I will be buying an Astra. Any car that you can drive away from a 50 MPH impact with a Defender is my kind of car! About this parking ticket... You should be able to get a refund under some circumstances. Of course you paid it promptly in order to take advantage of the prompt payment discount. Go back to the bay where the ticket was issued and look carefully at the white lines on the road marking the bay out. IIRC they should be 600mm long with a gap of at least 600mm between the dashes. Most, in my experience, are not painted correctly and cannot be enforced. Take a pic with a ruler and send it with a letter to the parking appeals people pointing out that you only paid up to avoid the punitive charge for payment later then 7 days (or whatever). You can download the The Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2002 for exact details. Chris
Graham Thomson
Well, the truck is in dry dock now for repairs estimate. The insurance boys told me they had no land rover repair specialist and invited me to choose my own garage. So it's gone back to the garage where it spent the last 10 days being upgraded....... As for personal injury, it appears that I have to find a "where there's blame" solicitor....... Anyone recommend one?
David Sparkes
"As for personal injury, it appears that I have to find a "where there's blame" solicitor......." Count this as a lazy response if you like, but I seem to recall the Law Society, or a similar organisation representing solicitors, can provide lists of legal eagles who specialise in different types of work. So, if you don't get a personal recommendation, start with the Law Society. I'm assuming such lists are free, but some cynics might think that's a dangerous assumption :-)) I'm not sure what the best search terms are, Compensation, possibly, or Personal Injury fits the circumstances better, perhaps. Good Luck
Graham Thomson
Had a bit of a scout round.......decided to go with the AA Injury Claims Service.
western
I'd tell your insurers to sort it for you, you pay them enough for the cover.
Graham Thomson
Vehicle was at my mechanic's place all day. He got his bodywork man out to look at it. He reckons the ins co may write it off ! Woe is me!! I've got a guaranteed value of £2800 on it, but I've spent a ruddy fortune having it cured of its ills....... If the engineer from the ins co says it's a write-off, do I get any salvage buy-back option? Irritating thing is, it doesnt look that bad and it is PERFECTLY driveable......
western
Just tell them, you want to repair it yourself, they only say it's a write off because they will use Genuine LR parts which will be expensive to do the repair & they will want to keep their payment out down. obviously your insurers don't know LR's very well, the rear cross member can be replaced with a good quality one from Bearmach & as we discussed earlier this week the rear arch/wheelbox can be sourced from a LR breaker or a new pattern part from ALLMAKES or Britpart or others, lights are fairly cheap & easy to get. good luck. Graham Thomson
Ralph, is the rear cross-member welded as part of the chassis or just bolted?
Martin90
Graham, Pain in the arse is the insurance, if you don't pay the extra you often end up going with your own solicitor. I had to take out a bridging loan through them so they could get paid up front, it was a risk free loan but in my name, I was young at the time and think I would tell them where to go now! The rear cross member is welded on. The most common replacement is one with part of the chassis leg on. These are sleeved over the top of the existing chassis rail and welded on. This site helped me when I did mine: http://www.jojas.co.uk/rear_cross_member.htm Martin
Happyoldgit
Ralph, is the rear cross-member welded as part of the chassis or just bolted? Although my name is not Ralph I too can tell you the rear X member is welded.
edwardatherton
Yesterday must have been the day for it all! Firtly I got up an hour late because she had forgotten to put the alarm on (it was my fault apparently...). Secondly I spent 25 minutes looking for my keys that I was convinced were in my motorbike waterproof suit pocket. Found them in that pocket - reason being I had picked up her waterproofs thinking they were mine. Thirdly clipped the back of an old Fiesta when the silly woman changed her mind about going round some parked cars and did an emergency stop! One small dent and a few scratches, but no real damage - I did manage to break her rear light lens so it will cost her more than me! When I said to her that I wasn't bothered about claiming on insurance, the unexpected reply was "I/m not bothered either, my car's a heap of junk"! Fourthly, at lunchtime spentages in a queue at Boots before realising I had left my wallet in the office, so had to put stuff back on the shelf and walk out! BTW Graham, is that your P4? Dad has a P4 100 as well as his 2A. They have a 1970 Morris Minor traveller as the modern car! I live in Clifton - you've probably seen my S1 around but it's in semi-retirement now that I have the motorbike for commuting. It seems there's a few of us around north Manchester - how about a pub meet at some point?
western
Ralph, is the rear cross-member welded as part of the chassis or just bolted? As others have already replied, it's welded on, best to get a replacement with extensions don't have a picture but one from Craddocks is Part Number : JC697 REAR CROSS MEMBER 90 WITH EXTENSIONS £115.00 plus carriage & possibly VAT on top. Graham Thomson
Well, I've had the quote from the engineer regarding repair of the truck. The bill comes to £2100 including vat. The truck has an agreed insurance value of £2800. Will pursue tomorrow, apparently the engineer faxed the quote to the insurance company on Friday. Will keep you informed, and cheers for all the advice thus far guys.

Graham Thomson
Got the repairs approved on Monday 31st March, handed over the truck to the repairer, went off on holiday to Mexico, looking forward to seeing it on my driveway on my return. No joy. Got back from holiday to find that the ins. co. had asked to come and inspect the vehicle for a second time and were haggling the price with the repairer. There will be some harsh words when I ring them tomorrow. Work not even started yet!
Graham Thomson
Finally..........job re-authorised by the ins. co. after I telephoned them at 9am yesterday for a one-way chat. Estimate is now 7-10 days. Still, at least I'm getting it back!!!
