Td5 Re-Map Tuning - Value & Performance?

What would it cost to get a later type ECU ( that can be reprogrammed ) ? How much work would be involved in swapping my current ECU for a new one?

Just wondering, as I already have a Nanocom, and it would be nice to be able to remap the ECU myself ( if I could find decent map files )

Hello,

I got my '53 Disco td5 tuned by Andy (Allisport) ( and Pete -Bell Auto- indirectly)

- big intercooler

- turbo boost module (the new one - released by Pete after June 08 - better than the previous one)

- EGR kit

- remap

- ITG filter

and had a 3in custom made exhaust fitted (from Dynoflow).

the Disco is running at 200+BHP and 400+Nm. Don't have the latest dyno... I had a few maps and tweaks done over the last 18m.

One thing was that the Disco was already very good before tuning... some td5 are better than others

the good news is that I'm averaging 31mpg with: 40% town driving, 20% UK M-way (70mph) and 40% EU M-Way (85mph - mostly with roof box)

there are a lot of supplier to choose from... the power/torque figure is one thing, the most important is to get the map that fits your driving style/use.

in term of improvement following the rpm (for my current map):

- low range: small

- mid range: big

- high range: average

which is the best for my use.

you may need a map that gives more low range for towing or off-roading.

I know that Andy/Pete have a few maps in stock.

This would be a good one for the magazines to do.

Take a stock TD5 and TDCi, a 4x4 rolling road and have a number of manufacturers provide their tune maps.

Then in a controlled situation as possible do a number of runs with each tune and compare the curves. Then a road test to add the not so subjective part of on-road driving and mpg comparisons. Obviously mpg can't be accurate as there could be a number of variables but an approximate comparison would be useful.

Cheers

Steve

LOL! the trouble is, the magazine that ran the biggest orangey coloured advert would probably say that their map was best.

What it costs is what you can buy one for. It should just plug straight in. No real work involved.

was proposed by dastek last year & the only company who were wiling to give it a go on the rollers was allisport, twisted refused point blank, probably due to there cars having to go on a proper dyno

I dunno, I have seen dyno reports that have nothing to do with the real power of the engine. Basically any operator can give the results he wants. Dyno tests are not really scientific and are a sales gimmick mostly.

I don't see why you'd bother....

There are a lot of differences between EU2 and EU3 engines, and personally if I had an early engine like yours, I'd just have your current ECU remapped (physical chip change) - with a tune that suits your car and your requirements.... rather than flashing your car with a file you know nothing about to save a few quid.

You could get a later ECU to work, but you would need a modified version of the files made when LR stopped selling MSB (none flash) ECU's, and only supplied the latter NNN instead.

The great misconception is that a Td5 is a Td5 - so will run with any ECU, and any files.... technically it will run, but is not ideal, and not without faults.

Dyno's.... are an interesting thing... they are a useful tool, but in reality only show part of the picture. You can make good power on a Dyno, and get some impressive power figures - only to find the car drives like an absolute dog on the road!! So needs to be turned down. A quick, short blast on a Dyno is very different to a prolonged climb up a hill.

It is true that operators can falsify figures by simply touching the brake etc etc... and at times, if the rolling road belongs to the people doing the tuning they will do anything to make sure that the figures match what they claim!!

There are a lot of things people claim that can not be done.... for example much over 400Nm from an auto Disco, or over 200bhp from a car that doesn't have excessive smoke is still useable on the road.

I'd happily have any of my cars on a rolling road, and have done with others on this forum.

Whilst Td5's are a bit old hat.... 99% of tuners don't adjust half of the things they could do.... simply because they don't know what some bits of the maps actually do!!.

The other point is encryption. There is no easy way to encrypt a late type ECU... you could spend hours fine tuning a remap - only for some one with a nanocom a few weeks down the line to rip the file and either share it, or sell it on as their own.

Hence why with regards to the Variable Geometry Turbo - Pete and I have done lots of tricks (including stuff other diesel tuners have never done!!).... and the files WILL be encrypted. Why should all our hard work, and testing/development time and money be wasted?? The files to go with the turbo and some of the other 'specials' we've done are not just pulse width mods!!!

One other question... when considering who to have remap work done by....

What qualifications and experience have they actually got!! - I think if people knew the true answers they'd be very, very shocked!!!

You can see this not only in their files, but also what they consider to be 'safe' limits - esp. when you consider EGT.

Porny - you rock!

tell it how it is.

One of the reasons i went with TD5alive is because in a post you made yonks ago you said you had trained/given him the maps for the td5 and knew them to be good.

as he's down the road from me, seemed like a no brainer to pay my money to him.

and by heckers like - worth every penny.

@Simon: I had a look around in Billing at 3 stands to tune my Disco 2001 as it almost died on the way to Billing pulling trailer with Hendrik's Haka4x4 on.

In fact all three used Pete Bells maps so as he was close to our stand, he did remapping of the disco to give it more torque and I was very pleased and still am with the result.

I have now also remapped my 90 but suffer some problems due to some tuning I did before, but his aftersales service is excellent

hrmmm.....

I would take the credit, but it was actually Pete Bell from Bell Auto Services who helped Td5 Alive... not me.

I think its about time that someone puts on a drag strip or track day event so we can all meet up, shoot daggers at one another, shiver in the cold and then come back on the LR forum bitching about the day

I only have a mere 300 Tdi so i might get left behind

That's what I like with Andy (Allisport). He does not not mind having his products tested. If he comes up top, good, if he doesn't, so what...

Having the most powerful td5 is "easy".... having the most powerful engine and staying within the reliability limit is something else...

In term of "drag race".. there are some talk about having on of the runway open for testing at the Manby Show 09...

after Steve and Barry saw me and Pete (Bell Auto) racing on the runway at Manby 08, they thought it would be great having it for more people....

I've only just seen this thread but would like to add my 2p worth.

I recently suffered a breakdown (failed injector) and got my 90 recovered to Ians (Porny) workshop.

Ian replaced the injector and got my 90 running better than it had done since I've owned it.

After chatting to Ian, it was very clear that he really knew what he was talking about. (his day job goes to prove that  )

I asked him if I could try one of his remapped ECU's in my truck.

After bolting in the new ECU and a few minutes working on his PC, I took the the 90 for a "test" drive.

What a revelation! It transformed way the 90 drives, making everything much smother and a whole lot more car like.

I returned to the workshop and told Ian not to bother taking it out!

After quite a few miles driving with it fitted, the difference to how the truck used to be is still so clear.

I'm one very satisfied customer!

And as well as it going better, the MPG figure hasn't changed at all!

Bonus! B)
