rtbarton
You should be OK as long as you don't have emergency vehicle wording, lights or horns. Many civillian vehicles have jam-sandwich markings and reflective chevrons on the rear &c.
BogMonster
A few hours with a hot air gun and some meths/rag will probably get rid of them anyway if you wanted to
Happyoldgit
I'd remove it. A warm air gun or decent hair dryer will soften the adhesive enough for you to be able to remove it.

Unlike normal vinyl when you peel off the reflective you leave ALL the adhesive behind - which doesn't respond well to a warm airgun, adhesive remover, thinners or nail polish remover. We have an ex-Ambulance and it took three days just to remove the words EMERGENCY PARAMEDIC from one side. The battenburgs are staying!!! Happyoldgit
If you take your time it should be ok.

Eightpot
I'm just going through the same thing, trying to remove all the lettering and reflective stickers from an ambulance - it's a grievous task. Some of the vinyl letters came off ok when warm, but the majority and main batenbourg stripes use a really heavy rubberised glue which does not want to come off. At all. I've tried diesel, petrol, WD40, hot water, hot air, nail polish remover, acetone, evostick adhesive remover - none work. The only way i've found is to heat the area, then roll the glue of with my fingers. painstaking and painful, but seems the only way. The evostick adhesive remover works for removing any remaining light residue (£2.50 from B&Q)
western
Might be worth a phone call or email to EVS & find out what they advise for removing these battenburg markings.

ChrisM_110
I've used new-fangled compliant Panel wipe as a soak, the old stuff didn't work. Soak a cloth in panel wipe, and slap it on a warmed panel, leave for half an hour. Softens up most adhesives.
stuvy
I work with vinyl ALOT and the best thing iv found to use is, this http://www.autoglym.com/enGB/product-proddetail.asp?v06VQ=GD it takes a fair bit of elow grease but doesnt leave any damaging residue to the paint laquer, or is it harmful to new vinyl once washed off!
