Guest
So for any of you following my rant, and considering going down the same route, this has just come up on ebay: http://cgi.ebay.co.u...=item2eadb8d304 Whilst when I set out on this epic journey 2k seemed a lot I would say that as there is £700 worth of roof tent would get you a good trailer for £1,300.00 if you spent £500 getting it sprayed and serviced then it would be a bargin, I wish I had seen it... could have saved me a lot of time and effort. Anyone want to buy a 3/4 built trailer before the auction ends so I can put in a bid? Jason.
A Twig
There's a reason why that trailer is cheap, it's cos its a bit poo. I climbed all over one of those when I was in South Africa at Easter A lot of it isn't as strong as it appears with latches etc, and there ain't much storage either. The galvanised stuff is great but makes it a bugger to weld and extras you might want on. The jockey wheels are pretty flimsy as well, and some occasionally drop down after a big jolt, thus snagging and bending/breaking on the ground. I would plough on with yours mate to be honest, you must be nearly there now!
FreebieFreddy
Jason, I was at the South-West LR Show this weekend and saw this ....... More photos here http://www.worcester4x4.org.uk/html/camping_trailer.html ..... a very nice 'wide track' sankey trailer with hand built (to a very high standard) custom top. I have some photos I took should you wish me to post them Colin
Guest
Hi Colin, I was also there, I came over to and talked to you this afternoon, when you were sitting on your own, I had my two kids with me... I saw that one, there were a fair few on the camp site also and a good conversion of a cooking trailer, I was even able to offer advice to a chap with a sized brake on his MK111. Good to see you again, Jason.

reads90
Nice read and interesting what you have all done. Sorry to hi jack but Time to show you my little off road camper trailer. Not as fancy as you lot. But i bought mine out of the box . And did not do alot to it unlike you lot Here is it with my 110 On Bribie Island It is basicsly a box trailer with a tent on . It runs on Problics . Working on the idea of keep it simple , less to go wrong . Has a 65 ltr water tank built underneth with a kitchen built into the back door It also has space for 4 more jerry cans and a tool box on the front along with a poll box The tent is on the top and opens like this one for acces to storage ( this pic is not mine but the same as mine ) This si what the trailer looks like when the tent is out The bed is on the top of the trailer and is a large bed It also has an front awning for cooking and as a lounge for camping . The other things it has is a long draw bar this means that you can open the back door on the 110 while the trailer is on the back . Very handy when your Engel is in the back of the car . It also has a Hyman resse tow bar that moves in all angles . So ideal for off roading This is where we went with our camper trailer . We lived in it for 7 moths whilst doing this trip and some pics on our trip on the back of our 90 Works well at wading too I have had this for about 4.5 years now . It was priginally blue but i painted it grey about 6 months ago last summer . This trailer has did 25,000 miles around Austrlia and been to all parts of Aus .And I paid about 3500 pounds new for it. Guest
Cheers, Reads90 (Sorry you didn't put your name) Your trailer looks great, I would have loved to go down that route and looked into it including just buying the tent bit but it all got a bit expensive when I had added freight and tax and VAT they were getting close to £5k which was beyond my budget. I figured when I finally get around to doing my "around the world" trip I could buy one in a country where the pricing is sensible, and just tow it home and hope the customs don't spot it!!! Thanks for the photos, they have been a great push for me to get back on and finish the project, a question for you, have you had any problems with stones? I notice you don't have a stone deflector, do you think there is a need for one? Cheers, Jason.

Here is Aus i was doing huge distances on gravel tracks. a few tracks we did were 800 miles long so you have to do 60 - 70 mph or it would take you ages .There were a few problems with stones. First the car flicks them up into the trailer and pretty much sandblast the paint work ( whoch is pretty much why i had to repaint the trailer )Also the stones bouch of the front of the trailer and hit the back of the car. Here in Aus this is such a problem that they have clear plastic covers that fit over your back windows to stop the stones breaking your back windows I did in fact later on make a stone guard out of Shade cloth , which is what most of them are made of any. They are just designed to protect the trailer and take out the momentom of the stone so it does not hit the back of the car Here is a pic of my one which i made on the way round .This was taken at the most north point of Australia and the only way to get there is by 1000 miles of gravel track. I am about to put on a proper one on to my trailer As you can see here . Need a stone guard as this was the start of another track to Alice Springs. This was pretty much the only way there unless you go 2300 miles around on tarmac and on the tracks Most of the time you can't see the trailer in the rear veiw mirro for dust so make sure the trailer is pretty well dust proof. Some dust in Aus is called Bull dust and that is like flour and they say that can even gets in a sealed tin of backed beans And days and days on driving on this at 60 - 70 mph Hence whu keep the surpension on the trailer simple A place to store jerry cans are always handy hence why i have 4 on the trailer. Not really ideal to carry on the roof of the car first due to weight up there and also in the heat all day . Not much fuel in the middle of no where Hope this helps Ali
Guest
Thanks Ali, You are very lucky to be able to enjoy such places, there is some fantastic photos there, although I did get to go to the Bath and West showground this weekend!!! I am very envious... and you can have an ARB bumper!!! Where are you buying the stone guard from, as I couldn't find anyone selling them, in the UK or Oz. I tried to keep things simple hence going for the Sankey trailer as it is very well built but simple leaf springs and axel, and spares are available so that helps. I plan to put 4 jerry cans on the trailer, http://www.apbtrading.co.uk/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=shop.flypage&product_id=115&category_id=7&manufacturer_id=0&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=63thinking 2 for diesel and 2 for extra water plus a 70L water tank internaly, I also have a 2 can holder which I would put on the roof for extra diesel if I needed it or if I was leaving the trailer and going off somewhere. I still think I would like to go for a full fold out tent, again been looking at them from Oz and Sa instead of just the roof then as over here we need a bit more inside space.... I had a look at the their trailer, at £10k it was way past my budget but was a great bit of kit. As for sealing the trailer I plan to make it fully water tight/dust proof as I don't want to get to the end of the day and find there is dirt in my dinner!! again, thanks for the feedback, Cheers, Jason. You have to have somnthing for those roos to bounch off. There are loads of people here makeing and selling stone guards here . But you can make one your self. Just need to make a frame and then put shade cloth over it . Here is where i bought my camper Castaway Campers They have them for sale we had the Brisbane off road camper show here last week . You would have wet yourself at what was there Send me your address and i will send you some Off road camper Mags . Who knows. Mmm considering most Aussie sporn from crims they argue till the cows come home about what you and what you can't legally do to your car. When I bought my 90 in Aus .The so called experts on the forums said I could not do it because of all the stuff o had on the car was not ADR .but when It came to be tested, it passed with no problem ,and they did not even look at those item the forum experts said woudl be illegal in Aus
Guest
So nearly a whole month has gone by and no progress, I have actualy been away most of the month, I came back the Friday before the South West Land Rover show and then went away again, working away so much has really not helped the project but I guess the rest has done me some good, as it was all starting to get on top of me I made a list of everything that needs finishing today and the list is not that long, I am hopefully going to take some holiday in the next few weeks which will let me finish it off, and get the garden back, I still need to rebuild the sankey also....... Oh well I am back in the UK now so it should let me get on with things in the evenings. Jason.

Guest
So just got back from a long stint of working away, no I didn't go to prison!!! just to the US I seem to have missed the summer and have done nothing to the trailer since the last post, I need to put a list together and get moving on it, although Mrs S says I need to spend some time with the family and then will start. Just noticed that the post has had nearly 10,000 hits.... WOW people really must have nothing to do with their time... if anyone has got some they could always finish my trailer for me.... I will update shortly, Cheers, Jason.
