Landrover insurance(warning)

I dont know if you guys have experienced this but, elsewhere, it seems that Frank Pickles only insures you if the vehicle is both modified and also not your only car.

I don't think that is the case, the vehicle does have to be modified, but they have quoted 'very' competively for me, and the Landy is currently my sole vehicle!

The only modifications I have are suspension lift, snorkel and winch.

Just to go against the flow - I have just renewed with Sureterm.

Aside from the fact that they send out far too much paperwork, I have had no quibbles for 6 years now. When I hesitated about renewing, they knocked £30 of the renewal quote, just like that. They've always been OK on the 'phone.

Mind you, I've never had to make a claim....

I'll give him a rimg next time i'm due. Not sure if a GKN overdrive, modular wheels, brownchurch rack, custom rear crossmember and RRC front seats will count as major enough mods though.

Anyone on this forum with a 130 SW??

Can't find anyone to give any quotes

37 years

15 years driving license (European license)

Never had a accident

Lowest quote £1500, don’t know yet the renewal price from Sureterm Direct as last year was £380

Any help, will be appreciated

I had similar problems, mine is a 130 single cab with a quadtech 3 backbody, most systems only show single cabs as pickup trucks. I even had a phone call off an underwriter for Lancaster insurance to tell me she could find no mention that L/Rover actually made it.. I sent her pics of the camel trophy trucks in the same build pattern and they still refused me..

Happily i,m now with Academy Insurance of Staines (ex snowball) who seem to have no problem dealing with it.

I think I paid in the region of £230 with guaranteed no claims etc

Gaz

I had house insurance with Academy (they took over my policy when they bought the company i was originally with) - never came across such a bunch of cowboys - didnt seem to have a clue about their own business! Lost all my paperwork, claimed they didnt know i had lodgers so wouldnt have been insured anyway, failed to phone back when asked to and then quoted a ridiculous price to renew and seemed p*ssed off when i didnt take it, then proceeded to pester me by phone when i'd already told them i'd gone elsewhere! Hope they are better for car insurance...

The next year i took my house insurance to the same place as my landy.....NFU. Even paid less and they understood the insurance i needed.

Got a 110 hardtop no mods, I've found lancaster very helpful but a pain to alter policies out of office hours. I pay 350 for fully comp (i'm 27).

They insured it from a vin number before i was able to re-register it to the uk (was previously uk registered) so no grief on that front. I have not tried to claim yet touch wood

I tried sureterm a couple of times but each time got a pushy salesman that didn't want to sent a written quote.(100's £ more for same cover as lancaster).

Directline said that my 110 hardtop was a pickup and therefore wouldn't insure it

I hate insurers...

They all rip you off.... everyone will do at some point!

In the post apocalyptic world insurance will be of no use to mankind and therefore these people should die...

For once i do agree that it requires the monopolies commission looking into because it is very unfair.

I've experienced 2 claims; Quinn Direct who quibbled not a bit and paid the stated value of my vehicle within 3 weeks and then Adrian Flux who delayed for months whilst arguing that my vehicle was not the declared value (including sending me ads for quite different versions of the car) and generally being rude when I could get hold of them. Evasive, unpleasant and thieving bXstards! I eventually settled for their 'final' offer (the 3rd final offer) out of frustration but it cost me around a grand off the value - and that's being objective about the market price... Insurance SCUM! Best I can get for the mo is Swiftcover but will look at the recommendations here (Not Flux though!).

Insurance is a funny old thing isn't it and very personal.

I asked Sureterm for a quote at a Land Rover Show.

Got told they don't insure vehicles with lifted suspension. Err.. why go to a LR show then and have a big stand? (IMO)

Went to NFU and they seem OK. Easy to deal with but I've not madea claim yet.

NFU for the house/pets/LR90. Best bunch of people to deal with (Salisbury office) and all round good eggs. Never made a claim on the car but when I 'managed' to torch the house 5 years ago they were 100%! Only problem on the last renewal was going from a car to a 'commercial' 4x4. The current 90 is PLG.

Doubt I will use them for the tdi'd SII 109 though. Bit to specialised

  • 2 weeks later...

I recently got a renewal through Sureterm. As my 110 is heavily modified and i declare everything, they decided i had a max 8000 miles per year when last year(my first with them) i was allowed up to 12000 with no changes to vehicle. Then when policy came through post, no no claims protection. This wasn't mentioned in the phone call setting up the policy but guy on phone reckons its part of the script they use. Had no claims protection with 'em last year. I won't be using 'em again as i don't trust 'em anymore. Looks like they treat you ok 1st year then try n screw ya. Rant over!

Thought i'd add to this rather than start something new, as it made me giggle;

just had a letter from NFU saying that they owe us £6.50, which we'll recieve a cheque for! upon investigation was told that as we'd got married in August, we were now insured as policyholder plus spouse rather than policyholder plus one, even though it's the same people, same setup, same requirements on the policy etc, it's now £6.50 cheaper!

I swear i'll never figure out insurance!

still, at least they haven't charged us for the name change, or just charged us £6.50 for something else!

Good insurers NFU (if there is such a thing)
