Spanner racks

Recommended Posts

I want to get more spanners in the toolbox drawer - these 'crocodile teeth' spanner racks are the obvious answer and they're under a tenner on Ebay...

But looking at them, there must be a similar offcut of something or other that's the same shape, but free - I'm racking my brains but I can't think what. Any ideas?

PS I'm a quarter Scottish, before anyone mentions 'skinflint'... :D

Err,

Am I missing something?

You want to get more tools in the drawer and you are looking at adding something that isn't a tool to the drawer therfore reducing space available in the drawer for tools?

Just sling the spanners in the drawer and be done with it. Poncy racks? Pah!

Drawer? DRAWER? Amateurs. Just ram the shed / garage / workshop full! Who cares if you can't find the right spanner ever again, just an excuse to buy some new ones!

Ah, I aspire to owning drawers in which I can store my tools in!

My daughter (3 years old) thinks I should have a tool tray like 'Handy Manny' and name all my tools.

It's got so bad now my wife will refer to a pair of pliers as 'squueze' and the cross head screw driver as 'Phillipe'

It could be worse still, we could get our cooking recipes of Big cook little cook! :D

Can you sign 'I need to get a life' or has my home been over run by children's tv!

Gents, thank you for such thoughtful and considered responses. Without the help of this forum I would truely be in the same place but have slightly more time on my hands.

I was hoping to strike a balance between 'lob em all in a drawer' and the kind of neat edge-to-edge, neatly lined up "James May" style spanner rack, a combination of organised but usable.

And thanks for the tool porn too - as my Dad says "don't force it, use a bigger hammer".

We have two drawers for spanners- one for metric and the other for imperial. The Metric ones all have a band of red insulation tape on, and the imperial all have a blue band.

At the end of the day we just throw them in based on colour.

The adjustable spanners do cause confusion with this system though.

Glad to be of service - I think - <_< - but your life would feel like it was lacking something?

I am dreaming of having a shed / workshop big enough to have a tool chest in AND be able to open the drawers, so I'm living out of tool rolls :( .

I converted the imperial ones to metric when I got the 90 ...

  • 1 month later...

It may have taken nearly two months of intensive research, but in the end I went for two Ernst racks and a set of crocodile teeth too :D

The Ernst racks are excellent - they actually take more room in the drawer now but I can see what's missing and it appeals to my OCD nature.

The crocodile teeth, on the other hand, are too tall for the drawer with my screwdrivers and punches on them, the teeth face different directions and the whole shebang falls over when they go back in the drawer. They might work with spanners but for other tools I'm not so impressed. Anyone want to take them off my hands for a fiver? Drop me a PM.
