need4speed
Im almost ready to hoist my RV8 into my chassis. Im wondering if its safe to lift the engine by putting the rope underneath the inlet manifold and hoisting it with the crane. For some reason i cant find my lifting eyes that bolt to the block and was wondering if the inlet manifold (with all bolts in place) would be strong enough. Its just the engine you understand - not engine and g/box... Phil
Shackleton
Personally Phil I wouldn't. I mean the manifold could possibly take the weight but do you really want to suck it and see? It shouldn't be difficult to get a few scraps of 5mm plate and make up a couple of eyes.
Retroanaconda
Or just put some decent rope securely round the engine, worked for me with a 2.25 (I imagine much heavier!)
bishbosh
Either find / make / buy some lifting eyes or lift with a strop under the engine. You'll probably pull the top apart if you try it your way. I would recommend using the lifting eyes as the engine will sit at a better angle for fitting. LandyManLuke
I wouldn't use the inlet manifold, that's for sure!
need4speed
I just thought that it might be ok considering there is something like 8 bolts holding the manifold on.... Not to worry. I'll make up some lifting eyes in that case. Phil
redneck
Sling a decent rope under the manifold, it will be fine. I mess around with yank V8's and use something like this on the manifold. The little old buick motor is lightweight by comparison. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B003BZQQWM/dwdis-20/
need4speed
Ahhhh good man redneck. I knew it wasnt such a stupid idea. Thanks for the link to prove it.
Night Train
If I was stuck for lifting eyes I would pass rope through the exhaust manifolds and around the engine mounts or under the sump. The lowest point of the rope would be tied together so it doesn't slip off either end of the sump. I wouldn't lift on the inlet manifold myself just for the agrevation of possibly causing it to move, bend or leak.
need4speed
Its a fair point NT. problem with that is, i dont have any exhausts just yet.... which blows......or in my case doesnt
Range Rover Blues
I think it would hold, but I wouldn't do it just in case. For another thing hanging it by the very top will make it much harder to tilt the engine to get it to fit. I'd have suggested a rope down throught the exhaust manifold to the engine mounts too, but as you say, no manifolds. I'd go for 2 bits of steel strip drilled and bolted to the head in place of the lifting eyes.
Les Henson
I've lifted various engines many times using just the manifolds. Just make sure the rope or strap is close to the block/head. Les.
V8 Freak
No manifolds does make it harder. If you can fabricate lifting eyes to the right standard, probably worthwhile and easier. (Is cost that prohibitive ? Can you not scavenge some from a breakers yard ?) Other than that, straps right under engine and looped through the engine mounts if possible. Remember to support front and rear.. Last thing you want is an engine flipping over on you !! Neil
stravaigin
try to keep up guys..... Fitted the V8 in this morning. Feel like im getting somewhere now as its beginning to resemble a truck again at last. Phil
berti1554
Use the exhaust manifolds. Is no problem at all - they are good to take the weight of the engine + AT + TC
