Cheap workshop linisher

Recommended Posts

I buit this metal sander for my workshop due to a lack of funds. The parts came from an old piller drill, old 2hp motor and pallet truck wheels from a catalogue. It uses 72inch by 2inch abrasive belts and i got the idea from the internet and youtube. With the 30 grit belts it chews metal really fast..

I bet there were loads of times during the build when a linisher would have been very handy ;-)

With the driven wheel being at the back I would think the belt would have a tendency to drop quite safely if it simply snapped/failed at the join .... might be more entertaining in a HFH sort of way if it only ripped part way through. However all the belt failures I have seen when using linishers have been rather uneventful.... well apart from the ensuing expletive fest when your last belt breaks when in the middle of a job!

Nice build :) I like home built/modified tools :)

If you think I'm odd, I years ago went out with a goth type bird

who was serious stunning but odd.

Some weeks later see shows me her "Personal collection" which was brought out

in a beautiful wooden box, and was her child teeth, and various nails she has

lost through injurys and last but not least all her old ear wax collected in a jar since a kid

.

Our "Relationship" ended shortly after this if I recall right, .....stunning or not :)

I've worked on the basis that I am not that made ever since :D

I had a spell of going out with LOONIES - I was misguided enough to think that their loonyness was just a programming problem that was interesting from a scientific / debugging point of view. Not a good basis for a relationship though! Fortunately Sarah came along who is the least 'in need of reprogramming' person I've ever met! By comparison, it's me that looks a little, shall we say 'eccentric' ;)

  • 2 weeks later...

Here are some more pictures if anyone is interested.

This is the tracking set up.The black tape helps keep the belt on track.

These bolts adjust the tracking.

I used the pulleys from an old piller drill and got a shaft turned to mount it on.This was the most expensive part of the build.

The motor is on a hinged plate and i found that a spring from an old bed holds it at the correct tension.

I pushed the bearings out of a 82mm wide(72mm dia) pallet truck wheel. Then had flanges made with a grub screw on it so it would lock to the shaft to become the drive wheel.

During the build i tried to source those stepped pulleys without any luck.Does anyone know of a supplier? :
