Rear storage draw - My latest project

Looking great Jason!

When I read '3 amigos' in the email without the picture I was wondering what you had done to make the dash warning lights come on!

I know it struck me that normally in a LR you wouldn't want 3 lights together but in this case I did!!

OK unfortunately I have a day job and this week is set to be a busy one.... I had an hour tonight so turned the battery around and fitted the MCB and inverter hopefully for the last time as it seems to have been in and out more times than an in and out thing!! So that is now ticked of the list, email from the Ali supplier confirming that the metal has shipped so should be hear in the next couple of days unfortunately I will not be.. :(

I have been using some more CAD to model the folding brackets and have that sorted now so just need to wait for the metal to arrive and the machining to begin.

Call from the engineering company today saying they had finished my bits so the rear door shelf and the 240v inlet will be next looks like I will have a busy weekend !!

Got home today after a long day on the road, but all was better as waiting for me were all the orders I needed to complete things well at least I think so!! I don't have time to do anything with the bits but it is good that they came.

2 x 5m of virgin aluminium section ready to be cut, OK i'm weird but there is something about clean fresh metal... :moglite:

The Anderson plugs arrived so I can get on with the 12v wiring

The 240V plugs arrived so again I can complete this bit although I need to go and collect the wing box and cooking shelf.

The mattress foam turned up I was worried that it was the wrong size but when I unwrapped it, it couldn't wait to spring into shape which is a good thing as this means it will roll up tightly, but provide a good sleeping surface.

The plan is to cover the mattress with waterproof fabric, not for any other reason as to try and keep it dry if it got covered with wet boots and coats.

So I guess it's time to get the sewing machine out and sort that out.

OK, nothing on the TV of merit so I decided that I would attack the cover for the mattress, 3/4 of an hour later and it's done. :D So that's one more job ticked off the list, off to Germany in the morning so the metal work will have to wait longer than I will at passport control tomorrow night!! but It looks like the weather this weekend won't be great so given that it's a 3 day weekend I think I may have this project nailed.

Jason.

Oh and the corner tabs are not a sewing mistake I made it like that as my intention is to add eyelets to each corner to stop mattress creep and allow for it to be fastened when rolled up.

Jason,

Have you got an 30mA - RCD on the 230 V side ?

Currently not Les, but that is the plan.

I had planned to change the 100a breaker (non rcd) that the MCB came with, with a 30ma RCD which is somewhere in my workshop, in the same place as my other breakers!!

I think I know where it is and am slowly getting to the box but tidying as I go!!

An early flight this morning and an early flight home, with very little queuing at passport control meant by 19:00 I was home. :D

I was greeted by yet another package, this one contained the bits from the fabricators, I didn't have time to start the electrics so decided I would do the rear door shelf instead.

I have a metal sheet on my back door from a previous failed project but as it is already there and sturdy the idea was to attach the new unit to that via rivnuts so that it could be removed if needed.

img00329201205021827.jpg

By jasong4110 at 2012-05-02

It went together really quickly, I decide to use rivits on the hinge, I had considered welding a straight hinge but felt that the rivets would do for now and I could always weld a hinge in place later filling the rivet holes with weld.

When folded up the tray is held in place with a Neodymium magnet they are great and I struggle to open it with just one, I brought 3 of them but would never get it open if I used them!!! I used magnets for the window blinds but these are the strongest I have used so far.

It needs to be removed and painted or powder coated (not decided yet) but I will accept this as another item ticked off the list, and a nice surprise as I didn't think I would get to do anything tonight.

OK so a great afternoon, I wanted to get the sleeping platform done, I started off with a bit of CAD and wood to get the angles, I started with 45 degrees but found it was to much so ended up at 35 degrees.

By jasong4110 at 2012-05-04

Next was to transfer the measurement onto Ali, I made a couple of mistakes with positioning of the holes etc but got there in the end.

By jasong4110 at 2012-05-04as I used

The bracket needed some trimming but once it was done and tested I needed to make 3 more, this was fairly easy as I used the first one as a template for the others.

img00339201205041613.jpg

By jasong4110 at 2012-05-04

I then fitted them into the Land Rover

Was really happy with the way they looked and how strong they were, I clamped the board onto the frame whilst I was testing it but to be honest it didn't really move that much.

img00344201205041637.jpg

By jasong4110 at 2012-05-04

Next I drilled the board and fitted the rivnuts and thumb screws

img00345201205041703.jpg

By jasong4110 at 2012-05-04

The bed kicks up a tiny bit at the head end this was intentional as I didn't want it the end of the bed to drop down, there is a gap where the thumb screws into the top of the dog guard but you can't feel any of it through the matress

Folded up the bars are just over 1.2 meters long so fit easily across the rear floor of the Defender so sorting out a storage unit for these is the next thing on the cards.

I have started on the 240v system and should get it finished by tomorrow morning so onto the 12v system after that it's really coming together now, I need to give the truck a good clean both inside and out but I am really happy with the result.

Today has been a good day, I made a deal with Mrs S where I spend time with her and the kids for the next two days in exchange for a day of work on the truck :D

I had a list of things I wanted to get ticked off the list, the first was the 240v system.

I was just gathering materials and starting to measure the SWA when my neighbour popped his head around the corner, "I have a roll of SY cable in the van if you want some?" It didn't take me long to say yes please, and also grab a bag of grommets from him.

I fitted the box and because it fitted tightly between the inner wing and the wing top I decided that fitting would be a bit different from first planned.

The box has 2 holes in the bottom for drainage and then 3 other inlets one for the 240v and the other 2 for an Anderson connection that will become a jump start point.

img00354201205051308.jpg

By jasong4110 at 2012-05-05

I routed the cable along the Chassis up the loom in the engine bay and to the wing box.

I fitted the plug and set to fixing the box, the lid of the box (false air scoop) will be held down by three thumb screws leaving the rear one in allows the cover to rotate to gain access to the plugs inside.

Think of the SY cable as an extension cable the other end is another socket mounted under the seat, I can plug the commando from the MCB into it, but by wiring it this way can unplug the MCB cable and plug it into the inverter as described previously allowing me to use the same system for both power supply's.

So that was the 240v system finished and another item ticked off the list, whilst I was doing this I had also painted the rear door shelf however it got covered in dust and whilst I was trying to save it, ruined it and got a huge run!! So it will need a rub down and repaint but that can wait for now, I should use it first, to check it functions correctly. I also painted and fitted the rear step, this will allow easier access to the shelf and boxes and has already come in handy.

So that was it the next thing was to clean the truck all of the metal shards, everything needed to be cleaned and the truck put back together so that I can use it. A plus is I now have the batteries on charge, so putting the 240v system to good use already and after a couple of hours cleaning I have a clean (inside at least) truck, I need to clean the outside now!!

img00367201205051919.jpg

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

The only thing to finish now is the 12v system, I have brought a new 8 ton hydraulic crimper and a sack full of lugs so ready to rewire the 12v side, I will take a connection from the batteries to a 50amp Anderson plug that goes into the National Luna power unit which will charge the battery. There will then be an output from the power unit to the rear of the truck again terminating in a 50amp Anderson plug for the microwave when required, that connection will have a fuse connector in it that will supply a 12way fuse box.

The fuse box will initially supply the 3x 12v outlets these will be rated at 20 Amp's each, these will have individual feeds so they can power most items, it will also supply some lights fitted under in the unit, and supply my Eberspacher Airtronic. The only other thing I am considering installing is a pair of lugs that will allow the connection of H/D items with crock clips, these lugs will take their feed from the rear 50amp Anderson plug so can be isolated.

I then have to run the cable and fit the power monitor to the front of the truck, find some more boxes and then that's it job done!!

Excellent job Jason - I really need another 110 CSW - the Disco isn't big enough for all that camping stuff, time to start saving again lol....

Cheers Stevie,

I'm sure there is loads of room in the Disco you just need to get organised!!

Good work mate - now enjoy two days of landy free time whilst with the kids!!!!!!

Cheers, it didn't quiet work like that though, my daughter has dislocated her shoulder and my little boy has a cold so endex was called on the weekends plans. After church and the weeks shopping I turned my attention to tidying up my workshop, when I get stuck into projects the place always seems to end up a mess, so a sort out was require before I move onto the final push.

Once I had finished the sort out and removed two bin bags of rubbish (mainly packaging from all the bits I have used) I started on the 12v side I am still waiting for the cable so did what I could mounted the fuse box wired in the 12v sockets crimped in the inverter and mounted the fuse box and mega fuse holder. I need to sort out the lights and bits but cracking on with things now.

OK so just a quick update tonight, I got stuck in for a couple of hours tonight and have almost finished the 12v electrics, meaning that the end is in sight!!

img00381201205091853.jpg

By jasong4110 at 2012-05-09

To finish list:

  • Battery tray/replacement main batteries.
  • Anderson connector/jump start point
  • Battery Charger (when it turns up)
  • Fit C-tec point (main batteries)
  • Remote battery monitor onto dash
  • Storage boxes.

I have some other bits to do for trip prep but that is not part of this build.

another couple of genius ideas there. i wish i could afford stuff like that.

Thanks Mikey,

I can't afford it either!! The Land Rover fund is severely depleted and I am defiantly having to sell the Series One now.

Mikey, don't you have a couple of series to sell as well? ;)

yes, when i get round to building them back up..

ive had to go over the series 2 and redo bits that i wasnt 100% happy with. and change the back diff because it was pitted. next its paint which will be expensive because i want it to be bang tidy.

on top of that ive got the T20 that were doing our charity uk tour on in a million pieces in my shop.. come to think of it. when were working on it we do a live feed and workshop highlights. will have to link it to a new thread here for those of you interested
