Guest
Jack, Let me know if you need a hand, I have access to a trailer if you need to go and pick up a Disco. Jason.
Mo Murphy
I converted a disco 200 to defender spec using a scrap lump Diablo. A scrap lump just like yours funnily enough ! Mo
western
And the defender and disco ones are the same? cylinder head & block & internal components. oil filter head are all the same, you'll have to swap the manifolds/turbo & complete timming case.so it becomes a Defender spec 200tdi. Mo Murphy
... and the injection pump brackets, injector pipes, alternator and ps pump brackets, ps pump, dipstick and tube, and you'll probably need the crank pulley too. Diablo
Christ... the credit card and turner engineering starts becoming tempting! Many thanks for the offer Jason. A fun Christmas I'm going to have....
crclifford
Jack, Sorry to hear your engine has gone. When my first replacement went, like that, it turned out the oil switch was faulty. I would check your oil switch and replace if needed. Unfortunately I've sold the cottage and won't be over your way again otherwise I would give you a hand. Good luck with sourcing a replacement and getti it fitted. Chris
Maverik
wow, thats a big old hole, impressive it still ran after that happend to it. Mav
CwazyWabbit
that's a big hole, any of the conrods missing ? Possibly, it's very hard to see without using a camera. How would you tell, short of dropping the sump? And what would cause this? I don't think you need to drop the sump, this picture of yours shows the bearing surface of the crankshaft where the conrod should be connected ..... It looks sort of blue where it has got very hot and the rust starting to bloom on the crankshaft makes me think you have probably smashed the cylinder wall letting coolant into the engine as well...... Anyway if you can see the bearing surface the conrod has gone The cause of that will be lack of oil .... which probably got caused by a knackered turbo ....... ........ Retroanaconda
Yes I would imagine that the conrod (#3 or #4 I would say from the relative location of the starter solenoid) is on the road somewhere! Certainly explains the rough running, 3 cylinders never sounds good
CwazyWabbit
I had a sports bike engine do that on the motorway after an oil blockage. It left the crankshaft blue and actually melted through the conrod end cap ..... I still have the bits of conrod and piston somewhere. western
certainly looks like a rod or the lower part of the bigend cap has succesfully escaped.
mmgemini
Many many years ago I had the big end cap escape from an Austin A40 engine. BANG, bang, tinkle, tinkle I stopped and a passer by picked up the big end cap passing it to me saying "This fell off your car, is it important? "
Maverik
"This fell off your car, is it important? " Hahaha i remember doing something similar but the driver of the car said to me "is that important" as i handed her half a cv joint and half shaft after one her wishbone ball joints had given way, Impressive the lady managed to stop the car in a straight line with her front nearside wheel wedged perpedicularly into the wheel arch/wing. We had a catapillar big high speed diesel throw a rod a few months ago.
Diablo
Bet that made a fair old bang! Is the disco turbo the same? Or will I still need to recon mine, assuming I get a disco lump and convert it to a defender style one? I'm also finding it hard to convince myself it's a good idea to buy an engine, be it from ebay or a breaker, without seeing it running in a vehicle. Roverdrive
@Maverik Those pictures look familiar. Is that the Havilla engine room? I am working offshore though thankfully not with Cats!

Jack, No difference in the turbos, as far as I know. The only difference is their location/orientation on the engine. The disco one is very tight to to the inner wing, as its lower than the defender one. This is off the top of my head, so I am willing to stand corrected. Diablo
I knew about the different location, hence I wasn't sure. It's mainly that on some parts websites, it states the part number, ETC8751, as for the Defender.
Maverik
If my devious plan goes ahead, I'll be able to tell you if there is a difference first hand, I'd like to say no difference, but I'm not a 100% sure. Mav
