qwakers
my disco has finally had it, all the seatbelt mounts have gone, its not going to go through another mot and the body shell is twisted where i smacked it in to a tree, sideways. so i decided to do something fun with it... trayback it. im going to let the pics do the talking mostly, but i'm making good progress, less than 3 full days into it now. im awaiting a steel delivery. all pics are thumbnails, click to enlarge. pic set one pic set two and as it sits atm... getting on. Soren Frimodt
Progressing good, now comes the time consuming part! Loosing that overhang is really going to help its offroad capability, it is without a doubt the biggest hindrance when offroading any disco or RRC. Just make sure to add a lot of weight on there or it's gonna behave like a pig offroad. Sparewheel, fueltank, batteries, winch(es), Hi-Lift etc springs to mind. If you look at my Jeep cherokee build in this section you can see how far back I fitted everything to retain a decent balance in the car, but still it was quite nose heavy. And with a 101" WB they are somewhat comparable. Also post up some specs on your Disco so we know what kind of beast it is! And most importantly, keep up the good work! qwakers
Its a mpi, so not exactly powerful but still a laugh. at the moment its got a (half fitted..) 2" lift (body lift pending) 13000lb winch, sump guard, diff guards, welded rear diff (when i get round to it) insa turbo dakars, marine grade fuel tank and in line pump, and a load of steel to build a roll cage out of lol. plans for the back include a winch (at some point) a lockable box to stick the recovery gear in, and of course the fuel tank, spare, high lift etc. its gonna be fun
discomark10
Looks good so far, your going to want to change the rear springs, mine with +2's was stupidly high. I ended up going with LR Yellow/Red springs, they work well and are the longest springs with that sort of spring rate.
qwakers
yeah im thinking theyre too hard, may get someone to wind me a pair custom. the build is getting on now.. injury's to date took corner of finger off on sharp edge whilst stripping bodywork burn on left arm whilst welding up the back..... put torch down, lent across it to grab hammer. you can guess the rest. burn on right hand whilst welding upside down (nahhh i wont bother with the glove for that 1" long weld... and worst to date is the 2" long gash on a finger where i caught it on my angle grinder when i wasnt paying attention........ might have to get that one looked at in minor injurys tomorrow.... its not looking healthy. these pics are 3 day old. havent taken todays. qwakers
today. having finished painting it (yesterday) i got on with the rocksliders/rollcage bottom front mount. should be solid, just gotta bend some pipe up and were there.
Nigelw
Did you weld any flat bar or small gauge box across those flat panels? I know from experience that the drumming from flat panels drove me bonkers!!! Looking really good there now. You bending the cage up yourself or getting one made for you? qwakers
yeah, 2x 1" box across the width. will fit vibration dampening sections if i need to, im bending the cage up myself. steep learning curve, i can tell ya.
bishbosh
You might want to consider some rear visibility - it will be a pig at events with only door mirrors to see out of!
qwakers
maybe. but i'll play in it for a bit and see. not imo worth the effort or cost.

Orgasmic Farmer
Not sure if you have seen my thread from some years ago. Could give some ideas? http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=15261&hl=trayback
qwakers
lust spent a hour or so examining that thread. thanks. interesting way of doing the snorkle. cage is nearly done, just need to finish welding it up, put the loops over the roof and put the second 'cross' in the hoop. then rip it off, paint it and stick it back on. 22/3/2014 26/03/2014 29/03/2014
qwakers
and yes, i know one side of the hoop's wonkey. Mildly miffed off but not remaking it. its only 5mm out, would you believe.....
qwakers
30/03/2014 03/04/2014 04/04/2014 today... and about done except putting trunking round the fuel lines and wiring to the fuel pump.
qwakers
im also gonna get a couple of lockable boxes to shove on there and sort out the spare wheel mounting. but it can wait for my credit card to stop screaming in pain!
Soren Frimodt
Great progress! I bet your looking forward to the first test in the dirt eh? If you do get too annoyed from the lack of rear view, a mate of mine has a back up camera in his Rangie and it works just fine, should be a whole lot easier than fitting a window. (though probably a bit more expensive) Lastly, I've made a little drawing for you Its just something that caught my eye, your cage would benefit hugely in strength if you fitted these two pieces of straight tubing: Where you have those double kinks it is very likely to become flat if you put it on its rough, this would spread out some of that force to the rocksliders, just an advice, feel free to use it or not! RedLineMike
Is that a join in the rear hoop? One in the middle & 2 either side?
qwakers
no just areas i cleaned up to weld attachments to and then changed my mind.

elbekko
Looks like it could do with a bar over the bottom of the windscreen too.
Bowie69
Diagonals in the B-hoop really need to go to the chassis, otherwise it will just fold at the lower section if you flop onto it.
