Snagger
Cyclonic breather still allow a lot of oil vapour through, so if the breather connects to the induction system before the filter, it'll get the filter pretty dirty. I have this on my 109, with a 200Tdi and 19J filter (which is why I use a K&N).
sighnbox
Thanks there just taken me six weeks what was meant to be a few days
sighnbox
Thanks Snagger so its nothing to worry about then .......Just more regular cleaning of the filter then to keep air flow at a max
western
Where did you buy the cyclonic breather to air cleaner hose from Please ? my 200tdi could do with a new one.
sighnbox
Western I had it made
western
I see, thanks.was it a reasonable price ? I'll keep looking, the factory one is between 45 to 95 quid new. higher price being the genuine LR part.
sighnbox
Yes £30 so lots cheaper than a Landy one if that's what they charge
western
Thanks for the PM & info, will see what I can get to replace the old hose, it' was new in mid '94 original when my 200tdi was new & fitted.
dave88sw
If i were you, i'd re-route the breather hose into an oil catch tank before the air filter. I've done this to a friends defender and his air filter now stays perfectly clean, he just empties the can back into the engine once a month. It was about £20 off ebay. sighnbox
Inst that what the cyclone is supposed to do-is ??????
western
Yes, but some oil mist still makes it into the filter, it isn't a big problem, as thats the way it's designed to work.
sighnbox
Ok so forget the extra Oil catcher thing then ....last thing I want is to have even more pipes made...Just wondering if I can fit some sort of mini filter or oil catching gauze in the pipe as it comes of the cyclone or just as it attaches to the air filler housing......so that gets oily not my air filter and then keeps the filter air flow at a max ....will do some research unless any one knows of something that would do the job ???? Ok Ebay and found this OK I'm thinking if I fixed this Inside the air box where the oil breather pipe attaches ..its lug pushed up into the pipe lug on the air box ....My thinking being it would catch all the oil mist and get oiled up rather than my main air filter.........(they come in different sizes so should find one that fits) Can any one see any problems in doing this ???????? jackbw28
I must say, that is a damn clean engine bay! bloody good job. As for the oil in the air intake system... I think the only way to do it properly is fit an extra oil catch thing. I finally settled for the Provent 200. It really is superb and drains the oil back into the sump so is maintenance free which is nice. But I understand after all that work you don't want more pipes! Perhaps the K&N thing might work... If it's cheap try it!I'll upload some photos of my installation when I can compress the image file size a bit!
Mo Murphy
Can you plumb the cyclonic filter directly back to the sump ? Mo Edit. Doh moment, it already is isn't it.
sighnbox
Hi Jack I like the look of that ProVent 200 ....Just thinking of where I could fit it without to much alteration to my pipes .....The mini oil filters are £3 on ebay and washable against £120 for the ProVent plus more silicone pipes ...So think for now I will try one of the filters and that will give me thinking time of where and how to fit a ProVent........Jack have you any pics of yours fitted please and how its piped in ??? Diablo
Looks good! I too am thoroughly fed up with oil in the filter housing, and have been tempted with Provent type oil catch tanks, until I see the price.. Maybe it's worth it though to keep the mess out of the filter and intercooler.
sighnbox
Diablo I have all so found these which are small discreet and should just fit between the cyclone and current pipe ...Its basically a spray gun water filter Of course can fit it neater then the top one I all so found this one which seams a smaller version of the ProVent 200 BUT the top can is screwed on so you can angle the out pipe in one of four directions.. jackbw28
Ok Folks, here are some photos of my ProVent 200 install. I think I found a pretty neat place for it as it's nicely out of the way. Only downside is the long pipe across the engine bay. There are a couple of extra little brackets I made to hold the pipes and stop them flexing to much or rubbing against anything. It's close but all fits with no touching. The pipes are made from off the shelf items ( a few 90 degree bends, a couple of 45 degree bends a reducer and a few joiners). It is a bit fiddly setting up but the results are good. The drainpipe tee's into the drainpipe from the original cyclone filter then goes to the sum. I installed a check-valve to stop any oil going up the pipe, but this probably isn't really needed. Sorry the photos are so huge, I did 'downsize' them considerably... Edited September 17, 2014 by jackbw28
jackbw28
Also, I have now done approx 10,000km since the instal and rebuild - and i can say that it really does work! I've just pulled a couple of hoses and found the hose from the standard cyclone filter a bit oily. It probably shouldn't be with only 10,000Km on a rebuilt engine but thats the way it is! The output hose from the ProVent is completely dry. Which is fantastic its working as intended. On a different note I did notice some oil leaking out of the turbo output pipe... Not very impressed and its definitely not coming from the crankcase! A quick twiddle of the compressor revealed considerable radial play in the turbo shaft! This was rebuilt with the engine... oh dear!
Diablo
If it's working that efficiently then I may well be sold...
steve1387
Hi I’ve come across the picture of your engine bay on searches for hoses for my 200tdi. Could you tell me where you got them all? I’ve currently got the head off the defender and would like to fit them on the rebuild. Cheers Steve
Mo Murphy
Have a look at MKperformancehose on ebay. HTH Mo

The one I got from Turbo Technics in Northampton is a very different story...
