CwazyWabbit
I noticed from a few places that there is a recall notice on some of the Pumas for a faulty weld on the front axle that in extreme cases can lead to the wheel detaching. Just thought I'd mention it here so anyone that may be affected can check. More details on http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic33029.html I've attached the pdfs here for convenience P047 Recall Notice P047.pdf P047 Service Instruction P047a1.pdf P048 Recall Notice P048v2.pdf P048 Service Instruction P048v2-a1.pdf P047/48 Q&A P047a3~0.pdf
Bowie69
Not relevant to me, but this phrase from the recall notice had me laughing: 'If the wheel hub assembly and the suspension collapse or detach from the vehicle, the vehicle stability will be compromised and the degree of directional control compromised, this significantly increases the risk of an accident.' FridgeFreezer
I was expecting this recall to be "Land Rover have realised they've accidentally fitted a Ford Fiesta dashboard"

CwazyWabbit
Actually I think they had a committee come to that conclusion
Daan
Nice, inspired by F1 tethers, so the suspension corner doesn't depart from the car. I'l have a go and check my front axle tonight, just to make me feel better. Daan
thirstybeast
A photo of failed front axle on a 2011 model. vehicle had about 44000 miles on the clock when it failed in January 2014. The driver assures me that you can feel something in the steering!!
CwazyWabbit
I'd imagine the steering does feel slightly vague afterwards ..... Did it cause an accident?
thirstybeast
No Accident, this occurred on a gravel road at modest speed (around 40mph), along with the vague steering there was a lack of drive as the half shaft popped and the wheel locked up bringing it to a halt...

Bowie69
That looks like the axle-side swivel flange has come away from the tube -these were friction welded in place IIRC?
Maverik
Thanks for the heads up Barry, one of my MRT vehicles needs the special retaining brackets fitted, so she's booked in for next week!
Bluericky
Sorry to resurrect this post , I’m a defender2 member but struggled to find anyone with a similar experience . My 2009 axle just let go on the weld whilst traveling at 30 mph on tarmac very close to home. The concern is that this vehicle wasn’t in the Recall Action P047/048 !! It’s a 110 DCPU , attached is a photo It’s done 130k but is well looked after and isn’t abused in anyway , not that it’s relevant as clearly it’s s manufacturing fault. thank goodness I wasn’t going 60 on an A road with my three kids in when it went as all control was lost when it happened and it would have veered straight into oncoming traffic.
