SPendrey
After a couple of hours of getting really annoyed I've left the old a-frame ball joint in place. I can't shift the rear-most of the two long bolts through the a-frame bracket. Everything else came of with a little persuasion, but that rear bolt was not moving! Even managed to cause the threaded end to reshape like a bulb with repetitive hammering. Impact wrench doesn't want to break what I guess is a rust/corrosion bond. Breaker bar just bends like I've never seen it bend before. Haven't tried using a jack and the breaker bar yet, for fear of just snapping the bolt and being really screwed. Any other suggestions? Thanks in advance, Scott
steve200TDi
I guess the next step is maybe to remove the ball joint and the two bolts that hold it to the chassis (hopefully they'll come out too!) and take the whole A-frame to a vice, or a press, or someone who can separate them! pete3000
take one of the a frame bolts out of the chassis and use the half of the aframe as a lever to give it a twist? to break the rust around one half?
landroversforever
Scott, if you can come over to mine tomorrow (any time before 2:30pm) my big impact gun will shift it. Both of mine weren't going anywhere with the big breaker bar, I just popped the biggun' on it and out they came!
landroversforever
Ah, that's assuming you have the A frame off the car!
DavidW
Can you get a drill to the nut?
SPendrey
It's the bolt that stuck in the bracket and a-frame, the nut came off without too much grunting.
daveturnbull
Take the whole A frame off the car, stick it in the vice, empty much WD40 in and around the bolt, come back a few hours later with a very large hammer.
dirtyninety
warm it up with a gas axe and give it more hammer.
SPendrey
Warm what? The bracket or the bolt?

JeffR
Having just changed an axle on the family hack, been there done that. Ended up taking the whole a frame off and despite battering the bejesus out of one of the bolts with a 14lb mell, the bugger was/is still there. sacrificed the ball joint housing in the end. No way was that bloody bolt coming loose, it is simply rust welded in place. Luckily had another ball joint housing kicking round. there is now enough copper slip on my vehicle to warrant weighing it in for scrap...
