Anderzander
I've just fitted a RR LT230 to my Td5 and the transducer won't fit the drive - the plastic drive is a little too big. Reading around everyone seems to say they just plug in - though I've found one thread with someone saying the same happened to them. No resolution listed for it though. Any suggestions? Do I file down the plastic drive (carefully) or can I pop the drive out and replace it?
tacr2man
Two options . I just filed down the transducer spigot evenly on each face to keep centralised , its working fine for several years. The other option would be get the td5 version of the drive gear , they just slide fit , there is an O ring on the sleeve . ps the drive ratio might need changing depending on the tyre size any way
Anderzander
That's helpful thank you. How do you get them out ? Just lever them up from the groove ?
western
the speedo drive gear housing can be levered out carefully [don't bust the alloy flange]
Anderzander
Are the flanges fragile ?
western
it's a alloy housing so just prise it out with care, don't be to BFH brutal or you'll be buying a new housing photo here http://www.johnrichardssurplus.co.uk/land-rover-lt230-lt85-transfer-box-speedometer-drive-housing-frc3286.html
dailysleaze
Here's a photo of the difference between a Discovery (left) and a Defender one. I presume the RR would be similar to the Disco... You can swap these pretty easily.
Anderzander
Thanks everyone - I'll have a go tomorrow and report back.
V8 Freak
Should be able to swap with the one from your old t/box Use penetrating fluid liberally and gradually get the whole thing to spin in the hole and then start to lever it up slowly, ideally while still spinning the whole unit. Mo Murphy
And is really really much easier if you remove the handbrake back plate because it may well be very very stuck and you'll need all the room you can get ? Good luck Mo
Anderzander
I always seem to make hard work of setting up drum hand brakes ....... Which was part of the reason I went for an x-brake on the last one.....
oneandtwo
The housings are not alloy, they are steel so you can and may have to get brutal if required!
Anderzander
Old one out - made a start on the one on the car, tried leaving the drum on - but. It clearly needs to come off. Rain has stopped play for today though. I'll see if I can get some time on it tomorrow.
Mo Murphy
Leave the cable attached Stephen, and just unbolt the back plate and leave it hanging. No adjustment necessary then ? Mo
Anderzander
I can't be accused of rushing things ... But I've finally got back to this - swapped it with the one from my old LT230. Getting it to spin, as Neil said, was definitely the key to getting them out. Pulling the hand brake off, as Mo suggested, was also definitely the way to go. Thanks Chaps.
