  1. I take issue with this. The 2 pin diff in my 100" only lasted 230k of hard sustained abuse. I was furious when it failed (I was left foot braking in a gravel river-bed, whilst trying to winch BBC out, after his V8 ingested mud and died). Poor workmanship! I wrote to Land Rover requesting a replacment (and a replacment halfshaft) and they didn't bother to respond. Typical.
  2. Is the D2 rear windscreen the same as the D1? Asking for a friend
  3. I have stuck with MT's for years - to match the requirements of the vehicle. In the last three years I have also been using the vehicle as my DD, so road miles have gone up by 20k a year. My last set of Hankook RT03's wore rally quickly, so I was going to swap to AT's. Then I discovered Falken Wildpeake MT01's. Pretty much unstoppable off tarmac, unless you are buried. Excellent on tarmac - quiter, handle far better (and RT)3's are pretty good), better fuel economy. Price is good as well
  4. Winch Max winches are actually pretty well made. Go for big numbers - ie over 10k. The gearing is slower, but that means you use less juice and there's less strain . Get a spare exactly the same model/make. Strip the winch down when you get it. Clean all the grease off and regrease with decent quality. If you fancy a trip to Somerset, I'll do it for you. Gratis For rope, don't use the chinese copy stuff, it's very unknown in reliable quality. This guy is excellent https://www.facebook.com/pages/category/Product-Service/The-Cheapest-Rope-Company-100921071734477/ SK95 at good prices - 98is slightly stronger, but 95 is pretty damn good. Big hooks. Easy and simple... Goodwinch (speak to Will; he'll probably give you a deal) sell well priced tested soft shackles. Cheap untested soft shackles are a liability
  5. I think you are worrying too much about getting stuck. I built a 110 up for a friend, who then proceeded to do over 40k around Europe, Russia, the former USSR, Turkey and Scandinavia. he got stuck once. Ten minutes walk from a village. When I did his training, he was adamant he wanted to take a Come Along winch for recovery. We got the vehicle deliberately stuck and I let him have a go with the come along. The lesson he learnt is don't push the vehicle too far. One stuck in 40k, including over 30k on poor and unsurfaced roads.
  6. When 'vehicle dependent travelling' it's worth checking out local enthusiast clubs. In Portugal, for instance. the Portugese Land ROver club are amazing, incredibly friendly and always happy to help https://clubelandrover.pt/
  7. I take it you are in Cyprus. So long distance motorway driving isn't an issue, but spares and reliability are... Depending on how much you want to do, options include VW 1.9Tdi, various Merc Diesels, Peugeot 1.9 XRD, Mazda 2.0 and 2.5 TD If you can get the parts and were happy with the OE, then rebuild it - but bigger bore exhaust and tweak the pump
  8. Obviously I no longer drive a 110/100/90 I find with my 1.22 gearing that even running 235/85x16's I could use an overdrive - if I ever find a cheap, working GKN, I'll look to go that way. I whole heartedly agree about retaining the OD and not going for the 1:1 I use/abuse my vehicle a lot more than you do. I have upgraded to four pinion 24 splines on front and rear - I think progressive upgrading to improve is essential on a Land Rover. If I had the money I would upgrade to LSD's in the diffs. I have no interest in swapping one in to the T Box - I see no point, as I have a lever that locks it and unlocks it. That works. I don't need to up grade to LSD's as I have a near perfect suspension set up (for what I use the vehicle for) and near perfect tyres. But, I like an LSD and the way it effects the driveability of the vehicle.
  9. Service the TBox, service the axles The rest is nice and shiny, but for what you do and a whole lot more, simply spending money for something you don't need
  10. Spain has a no wild camping rule now - but Parking overnight is fine. I've wild camped all over Spain and have never been questioned/fined, I think the Guardia Sevil have more important things to do
  11. I know that cemetary, up above Burgos in the National Park. There various bits of GBU film sets in Almeria, Andalucia and Aragon. We drove through one of the sets on the Baja Aragon, back in 91. If you like unspoilt spain, I would reccomend the Picos De Europa, Monserat (in Catalonia, and not far from the lovely Savi and Phil at Spanish 4x4) and the Sierra De Barbanza (loads of wild horses). The mountains along the coast between Malaga and Almeria, on the the south side of the Alpujarra valley are amazing. The valley itself was one of the last bastionsof the Moors in southern spain, then the last bastion of the Communists in the Spanish Civil War. It's a truly amazing place
  12. France was excellent and still has good bits - the expert on here is Arjan
  13. Bad spelling, that's what - I meant to write Baetics. It's a system of mountains that runs all up through the South of Spain, from Gib up through Andalucia and Valencia Also know as the Cordilleras or the Beticas. It includes the mountain range north of Ronda, the Sierra De Las Nieves (a personal favourite and where we used to take the Porsche Cayenne owners club, back in the day). I even have routes in the Parque Natural Los Alcornocales (form my days working for Toyota Gibralta I love Spain, as long as I'm no where near the tourist hotspots on the Mediteranian Coast. So many mountains, so few 'wild campers', so many legal routes to drive
  14. Next weekend - not this, refurb rear brakes on the Disco, including new Discs and pads and prepare for MoT Feb, after 29 years my Disco needs it's first new boot floor. Well not 'need', as I could patch it. But, with the help of YRM, I am replacing the boot floor in it's entirety, including the underfloor cross members. After chatting to my MoT man, I'm going to make the floor removable. Parts should be here tomorrow. Everything will be media blasted, etch primed, primed and painted, prior to fitting In March I will start on the body restoration works for my T4. Wheel arches first, then sills. Hopefully looking to take it for a re-spray in July; or alternatively sell it get another Vitara
  15. My trips to the Sierra Nevada are a joy. I'm only pre-running routes for a 'tour' company, but the majority of the customers are French or Dutch, so generally have a better attitude towards 'off tarmac driving' (although not all), meaning they want the journey not the challenge). Over the years I have logged well over 700kms of routes in the Sierra Nevada and the Beatics....
  16. Something often discussed amongst Discovery 1 owners.
  17. I consdiered packing it in. After I resigned from my positions within GLASS. I stayed a member for a few months then didn't bother to renew. I tried ATUK, became an ambassador for Somerset and Devon. That lasted a year. My Heart simply isn't in it. I'm still chair of the Somerset LAF (the only vehicle representative Chair for any LAF in England....woohoo), but I shan't stand again when my present term is up. I go laning occasionally. Mainly in Dorset. I stay away for the popular places. The whole Glass politics thing killed it for me, although the icing on the cake is, without doubt, the new wave of wuckfits
  18. That's completly the opposite of my understanding, but sounds sensible - thank you Moseph I felt it was much smoother, rather than more power. But I interprested it the wrong way as I had misundertodd (completly) how
  19. It was my understanding, not necessarily correct, that they retard/advance (can't remember which) the pump timing to allow a smoother power delivery through the gears - 'no quite shutting off the pump as much' was how I had it explained. I don't have one fitted, but I've driven a few vehicles with one fitted and it's a marked difference in power delivery. I wonder if the 'sticking' is a lack of fuel at the time of demand. But that could be timing, 'on boost demand' not being right. Or alternatively I might be completely misunderstanding what Mav origionally said
  20. Reverse bleed the only way to do it - and even dealer practice in the olden times Then just top up the reservoir
  21. I would live with it for the time being, whilst undertaking diagnostics. Even recording ambient temp
