  1. Treadlightly UK Project – Evidence Based Decisions – Investigating the positive impacts of vehicular use on biodiversity. Dear All, As part of my involvement with Glass and Treadlightly and following on from my Dissertation on the culture or Greenlaning and its relevance as a contested use of a resource for my undergraduate degree I am currently driving this Treadlightly project which I hope some of you may be interested in helping support. Preface There is a lack of serious scientific evidence surrounding the effects of Vehicular use on Greenlanes and the biodiversity of that lane. Previous works have implied a positive relationship due to Greenlanes functioning as wildlife corridors. Establishing this link is of increasing importance owing to the contentious nature of vehicular use on Greenlanes. Objective The create a body of substantive research ultimately leading to a series of peer reviewed academic pieces which can contribute to evidence based decision making. Initially this Treadlightly UK project will seek to work with a Masters Student at the University of Exeter linking with the Environment and Sustainability Institute (ESI). This will give the basis then to undertake larger studies as well as providing evidence for funding applications to drive larger studies. How can you help? In order to undertake this, a suitable set of Greenlanes needs to be found ideally in Cornwall where the ESI is located or Devon. They need to be similar in composition and include lanes that are both vehicular and those that are no longer vehicular. If you have any local knowledge of the area please do get in touch. Secondly as with everything in this world money does unfortunately play a part. With this especially for the later years we are going to need to secure some funding in order to access multiplier funding such as the Heritage Lottery Funding. Therefore if you are in a position to provide some funding either as a company or individually please can you get in touch.
  2. Were popping over Sunday for a few hours. Got my sunglasses and flip flops at the ready
  3. Parking doesnt seem a strong point for the locals there no.
  4. You mean these rear lights? As I spotted in Haverfordwest yesterday on my way back from seeing the other half. Looked good though you could tell that it was longer than a normal Range Rover and sitting lower when you noticed it was there as it didnt actually look as obvious as its size would suggest.
  5. Personnally I would go down the second hand route. As said give it a lick of paint and it will be good as new at a fraction of the cost of new.
  6. Isnt something rolling around in your boot area/back seats? I remember thinking I was going to haft to go search for the cause of a knocking noise and turned out to simply be an errand water bottle
  7. Guys do any of you have these numbers? My MOT is due shortly and under the new rules I need to get this sorted (I know it really affects how the car runs) assuming by going to a 4 indicator relay that will see the proper indicator light flashing on the dash rather than the trailer one?
  8. Be aware there are a fair few issues in the lakes with regards landslips on various lanes in the area so best check for any VRs etc with the routes there are also a couple with 1 ways which I believe are findable in the Hierarchy of Trails from memory. Ta
  9. Running my BFG KMs the same size and pattern but not a remould I normally run 32 front to 36 rear adding around 4/5 PSI for a long motorway run and then taking a bit off when off road i.e. to the mid 20s. Having said this I found my front left at 18psi yesterday which I thought was a puncture and it hasnt relost pressure and its been checked out by the garage. Obviously not as fussy as I thought
  10. Likewise being able to "see cracks" in the timing belt is more of a worry as its contained in the timing case? Do you not mean the serpentine belt that powers all the Aux components like the water/power steering pumps/alt/air corn etc and is held in tension with a simple tensionar that is easy to release so the quick change?
  11. A clunk in taking up drive could be anyone of a number of mechanical things, I'd start by checking your props both the UJ's and the splines as the first and easiest port of call and most central to the box. Also is this something that happens just when taking up drive in reverse or is it something that occurs whenever the drive is picked up i.e. picking up out of a junction. If its just when taking up reverse then it maybe a mount or something loose around the gearbox thats being moved as drive is being taken up. Perhaps it would be worth getting underneath and making sure everything is tight around the box mounts to remove this possibility?
  12. It passed the MOT with no welding needed
  13. Cheers Western, hopefully this will tighten up my diff lock mechanism a bit!
  14. Right I get you, learn a new trick everyday there No, I found that changing to BFG MTs seemed to solve things. I still get a wobble on large pot holes but nothing that I am too concerned about to go delving in there before I need to renew the swivels anyway which is fairly soon. You wobble you describe sounds more like a slightly loose panhard rod in that you need to slow down. Unfortunately there is a lot of links in discoveries that could all cause problems. Is there perhaps a club member of some club near you who could offer an hour of poking around to try and track down a likely culprit? Ta
  15. Dear All As above, I am after the part number/a source for the 4 nylon bushings that are used in two pairs on the diff lock mechanism of my 200tdi discovery. Kind Regards Ryck
  16. But would you not be fighting against the steering damper and box at this point in which case there would be resistence their anyway so as to not reveal if the pre-load was insufficent.
  17. Have you also looked at the swivel pre-load? This wouldn't be picked up in any of the above or by the MOT but could be a cause. Does it become unsettled when you hit a pot hole? Ta
  18. I would agree with BogMonster that the condition is probably the most important thing as either one could be a complete dog and you could easily spend a lot more than the difference putting either one right. A few other points would be - You do have all your off road bits for the 300tdi so it would be worth factoring that in as a cost which you would save compared to buying/sourcing new parts for the td5 even if they were offset by selling your tdi parts. - Certain parts on the td5 which would be fairly consumable in the off road environment are much more expensive for the td5 than tdi. I am specifically thinking hub bearings here as a sealed unit on the td5. This maybe something to consider in terms of running costs perhaps?
  19. Yes there appears to be plenty of cheap ones about on ebay but how do they perform and will I be left wanting for the lack of my current 8" spots on the front. @M&S aren't the Rally Giants around the same size as the 8" Wipacs or is there a smaller size that I haven't come accross yet? I'm not sure what I would do with mine, I feel that postage is going to stop them being sellable really so they'll probably go in the back of the shed for future use. All the best Ryck
  20. Dear All, I'm going through the processes of fitting my winch to the front of my discovery. However due to the nature of the winch with its solenoid and also the freespool selector I'm unable to retain my nice 8"inch Wipac driving lights due to the lack of space within the A bar on my discovery, so I am looking for some smaller driving lights. I have found these Hella FF50 which look promising as I am looking around 4inches of so ideally to fit well. Does anyone else have any product recommendations on this or ways they kept their driving lights with fitting a winch to their discovery front. All the best Ryck
  21. I saw that as well, such a shame. Hopefully someone bids on all the parts and puts them back together to a degree
  22. Hi Guys As above I am removing my 200tdi disco clutch system damper and stupid pipe and am going to replace it with the flexi hose from the 300tdi defender and a new made section of pipe. Whilst one end of the flexi pipe goes nicely into the slave cylinder the other end needs a journal which doesn't match the conventional ones I have in the garage. Does anyone know this thread type and perhaps even where I can pick one up? Ta Ryck
  23. Not sure of the part numbers but you can easily get to the springs in the top of the gearbox just go in through the top by removing the centre centre console. Ta
  24. Filled in and a pretty nice survey as they go. Haven't seen any news of this one yet which is interesting as its been ongoing since December. Rare chance to potentially influence a County Council policy document as they don't renew them very often.
  25. Very scary indeed. I shall add that the Scorpion Racing one that I picked up (Not at the full price of nearly £400 I hasten to add) doesnt have this join in the middle to my knowledge and has taken some nice tree scalps on the outer sides (even filling itself with the edge of an old of a tree stump) with no problems. The recovery point on that is also bolted through the bumper and onto the rear cross member so is supported by both the bumper and the chassis. Regards Ryck
