  1. Just back from a run down to Lot et Garonne to collect some of my workshop machinery that has been gathering dust for nearly 3 years. So loaded up the faithful Ifor Williams (weighed it at 3.5t) and loaded the car with wine (as you do), must have been pretty well up to the max permitted, and set off for Cherbourg and the ferry. No real problems on the run except that when presented with an incline the cruise control did its best to maintain progress and the box kicked down and the temperature went up sometimes into the red. I started to manage it by dropping out the cruise and slowing more, staying in the middle gears if possible, rather than rev the nuts out of it, but the red light came on briefly at one point even though I was down to about 20kmh. As soon as the hill was crested and the revs dropped the temperature went down very readily (happily). Weather and ambient temperatures were quite 'English' and not the cause. Coolant is fresh and level stayed good. Just wondering about the best way to test the viscous fan and I'll set about flushing the rad I guess.... just wondered whether folks had any other good tips about what to look for please? I know it was working hard but I have done much the same in warmer weather with a Td5, probably nearer 7t all up and the needle never moved, I think it should have handled it really. I will say that with the air suspension we were much more comfortable on the trip though!
  2. Sounds like the answer is 'LR4x4', when you decide on a price ...... I bags 3rd dibs
  3. Well, I watched it through and I much prefer 'SOUP'. I wonder what the budget was. ........
  4. I tried to start a small compressor once with a 4kva generator, it didn't get close. Pay attention to the specification,... the headline capacity and the actual rating are often very different, also unless you can tuck it away somewhere the noise becomes a strain, (neighbours?) so then easy to start and stop is nice to have.
  5. Thanks, I guess when I saw the word broadcast I assumed tv and I couldn't see it in the Radio Times! From my point of view that counts as narrow casting. I suppose I must not be the target audience?
  6. Lets assume that it is of interest and we want to watch it........ broadcast how/where/what channel at 8pm BST?
  7. Just tumbled across this thread, ..... I asked my step son about Evoque a little while back when he was working as general sales manager at a JLR dealer in NSW down under. In the dealer statistics the range had the lowest repeat business index of the whole JLR catalogue. (ie nobody buys a second one).
  8. I did an oil change on mine (auto box I presume? don't know what oil the manuals use) with a little help from the forum, after I had done it I did come across a flushing sequence somewhere on the www but it was for a Merc vito, ..... the guy doing had effectively made up a special adapter so that he could circulate fluid through the rest of the oil ways and (?) the fluid flywheel. There is no doubt a benefit but would it warrant the pfaff? if your oil was bad then I wonder if a couple of closely spaced oil changes would achieve 99% of the result with a much simpler process? There'll be someone who knows along shortly I am sure but that is my 2p; I guess to a large extent it depends what facilities you have available, if you are working on the floor as I was with basic facilities then the additional oil change must be favourite
  9. P38 DHSE 2001. Been having a shuddering wobble in the transmission getting gradually worse, about 25mph it starts. Today is the first day I have had a chance to crawl under and I can see that the front propshaft UJ's are toast. Now I happen to have a pair for a D2 Td5 of similar vintage on the shelf, anyone know if they are the same please? Cheers
  10. Sorted now, it was UNF, I need to re-dress the points of my vernier caliper I think. The screw pitch gauge turned up and so did the UNF bolts. (BSF were ordered first but still haven't arrived. )
  11. I have just seen the price of that Rust Bullet mentioned above, ......... strewth it would have to be better than good at that rate !!
  12. Curiouser and curiouser.......... the parts book I ordered turned up yesterday and they are indeed listed as UNF but counting threads on the bolt I have I get just under 26 TPI (I only have 5/8ths to work with, and the screw pitch gauge hasn't arrived yet), UNF should be 28TPI. I have ordered both now so I have to see which one suits, ... and then I will have known comparisons to hand so it should help the next time, I don't want to be ordering 2 or 3 of everything! I think 1/4 is probably the trickiest? hopefully other sizes won't be so bad.
  13. This forum is just the best,....... I spent a lot of yesterday on this on and off (when you start going round and round in circles on the net it gets frustrating). Straight away though TSD comes up with that LR part number scheme, which is great. FF neatly summarizes where I got to, (perhaps I should have waited!) I learned that the major diameter is key and ordered some tables; and Peaklander throws in the tip about LR Series. which means I am now much more confident about the whole subject. ... Result. In case anyone has the same difficulty I am pretty sure they are 1/4" BSF x 5/8" long , I am off to check out the availability, thanks all.
  14. Just getting to grips with the new toy, an old 2 door Range Rover from 1980. Just having a hoover out and stripped out the carpets to dry it out. I realised the rear seat brackets have been removed and only put back with a single bolt (instead of the usual 4) each side. It is one of many disappointments with this vehicle! As the nuts are captive in the side frame the bolts must be the correct ones. I am no expert on thread forms although I know that Land Rover use most of them over the years so I was looking at thread pitch gauges that are available and whilst I can find metric and Whitworth in abundance, the likely candidates of UNF and BSF seem much harder to find and there is little or no detail on the thread range covered. Does anyone know what these bolts are and or have any tips for good gauges to look out for please?
  15. Well thanks for posting, I quite like the look of it.... much nicer than a Bentago,.......... I'll add it to the list of things I will go shopping for when I win the lotto :)))))
  16. Had the same thing a while back, turned out to be a loose tappet had thrown a little round disc out.... Easy to check.
  17. Can't help I'm afraid but really interested to know the answer. ...... I heard that they can't be rebuilt due to the way the main bearings are manufactured, and that's what gives rise to the trade in enginesfrom scrap jags etc.
  18. I reckon I found something that suits me, ..... 3.3m between the posts! fired off a query to see if they do it as a 'clear floor' model Twin Busch 2 post
  19. On the subject of recovery from mud the very best lesson I learned was patience. ....... apply the force you have available be it 2 or 3 or 4 tons and wait. .... then go again, don't be in a hurry and bit by bit the vehicle (in my case a digger) can be coaxed out. Just my 2p......
  20. Love the timber frame, very impressive. There are actually plenty of artisans in France that do that sort of work still, with French oak, and the more modern laminated timber products;... in fact I have been known to dabble myself. Now in Ireland I opted for the quick and easy Meccano kit approach, only it turned out not to be that quick, the builder doing the walls might turn up next week if I am lucky; it was supposed to be last October! Second snap shows a workshop and 'carport' I did for a mate a few years back, good Landy that too, wish I'd kept it.
  21. I am all up in the air over this now...... I was thinking 2 post, just for the footprint really, but when the thread got into it's stride I thought maybe 4 post would be safer and nearly as versatile. I am thinking that for me the obstruction to the front doors would be the big issue with 2 posts (not being a 32 waist any more!) so I am wondering, do the higher capacity lifts, 4000 or 4500kg which I assume are made for larger LGV type vehicles, have any useful extra width between the posts?? Anyone use(d) such a lift?
  22. Bump........... G'day down under........... I just looked up this thread because I had a trailer idea floating round and round and I remembered the drive over mudguard/fender format De Ranged had going, . ....and I'm glad I found it. Its been a while, could be there's another thread I haven't found???? any updates?
  23. Car tax is much worse in Ireland ! €1080 for a Td5 or anything 2.5 litres that is pre 2008.
  24. Miggit is spot on, usually the nipple pulls out of the handle and the handle fixing bracket gets bent..... it will normally have been stiff for some time before hand. If the cable is snapped then the problem is that there is a security guard over the latch that makes life very difficult.
