  1. Hiya, Dont know if this will help, last year at the Peterbrough show we helped a guy who had a similar problem to yourself. After he messed around a bit we discovered that the little plunger things that turn on the courtesy light and also act as a sign of entry for the alarm/immobiliser had become stuck, so the trucks brain constantly thought it was open, little bit of wd40 and it worked again. Dont think that will have anything to do with the burnt wire issue, that could be completely coincidence? Paul
  2. Hi again Finally got around to start of the refurb with the trailer, does anyone know what replacement brake shoes I need to replace the old ones? I have took one to my local car parts place and he has searched bit to no avail? I have been td that some peoe rub N these trailers without brakes, is this an option? Paul
  3. Hiya, I have a nato hitch directly bolted to my rear cross member, inside there is a steel plate abpout 4 mm thick which the bolts go through and the plate is a few inches wider sideways, my sankey sits slightly upwards as i have a three inch lift, the drop plate arangement is as far as i am aware only needed if you have the ball arrangement which is a lot lower
  4. we have just had a mates fail MOT with a leaky box, so deffo fix it before MOT time, I know sometimes its a dirty word but Paddocks do i think a fair exchange deal. the box will cost you around 180-200, but then they give you 100 back when you take your old box back Paul
  5. Dude for what it costs a roll of masking tape, couple of cans of undercoat and two or three cans of top coat you will get a much better finish. Leave it until a warmish day and that will improve the shine on the wheels or take them inside to dry, mask around the rim and try to get it behind the lip of the rim, when you get all the way around then lay sheets of newspaper on top of the tape and stick that down also to cover the tyre. tape the valve up and spray away
  6. As i have found with any injuries to hands the knuckles are most prone to damage as that bugger of a nut lets go, as man medicine goes and i think you will agree this is the best format for medication? 1. injury occurs 2. some swearing may follow? 3. the hand that is damaged is securely placed between your legs, just below the testicles and you tighten your thighs to ease the pain 4. a tribal like jump/bounce/dance is performed whilst the hand is firmly in place with afore mentioned soft bits whilst a kind of speech, mmmmmmfuuuuuuuuuaaaahhhhhh may emit from the vocal cords 5. your mates have a look and call you a knob 6. 1 fag later, back to work, only to continually hit the injured part excactly in the most painful bit 7. have some beer 8. day two after the injury, it will be ok or amputation is always an option??????????? hope u feel better? Paul
  7. Hi V8 I just bought some brand new General Grabbers AT2 33x12.5x16 fitted to new modular black rims with a 40mm offset(negates the use of a spacer)all balanced and ready to go from Paddocks £540, including a set of locking wheel nuts, which I thought was a good price? Paul
  8. Hiya I will check this out as it sounds a good idea? I have a mate who is going to be using an american product called "Brown Bread" supposed to be the mutts bits, we'll see? Its £13 per roll 600x1000mm and sounds similar to the quote I have already lined my doors with an improvement, I used some floor underlay we had left over, its about two or three mm polysterene and has has foil face Paul
  9. Are you fitting Larger tyres? If so have a look at paddocks, they do wheels that have a 40mm offset which negates the need for spacers. Paul
  10. Hi all Could anyone tell me if a sump pan on a 1991 J plate defender, with a genuine 200td1 engine is the same as a disco 1 pan? Cheers Paul
  11. hiya, I did the same as jason few months ago, with two half metre strips, it does light the back up but not enough, i think as with Jasons my headlining is black and that tends to kill some of the light? I think to be able to find something you will need at 2am in the pitch black its not enough? I think next Hong Kong order will be maybe 2 x 2 metre strips so it goes all the way round the rear roof line. The LED scene has come on no end, b4 anyone tells me its illegal, I know, but I am in the process of changing my exterior lighting to LED, we have already done it to a mates truck (which passed an MOT with all except front lights changed to LED)and he has daylight 24/7, the only thing different I am awaiting to drop on my doorstep is hopefully a replacement of a 68 LED bulb for the spot lights, if that fits then whohooooo, i will have the power of the sun in an 8 inch lamp. To add to this I drive a 60 plate Astra and I still think other road users have brighter lights, so much so that I am wary of overtaking, it may be my eyesight but I have always had this? I find it very annoying that the imports can sport these LED lamps as standard and dont really get to see what its like from behind when you have a BMW or Audi up your trumpet with no where to go. 12. Hiya, Personally I wouldn't remove the door at all, change one hinge at a time and don't fully tighten the bolts up, there is adjustment in the hinges where they sit in their captive bolts in the bulkhead in all directions. The problem as I understand is that when your door is shut it doesn't fit flush with the rear panel? If this is the case there are two screws that hold the striker to the door pillar by having two captive/welded nuts on a plate, once you have loosened the screws you can also adjust this so you can pull the door in, up or down here to. Hope this helps Paul
  13. Hiya, I would be careful, I have heard of an instance where someone bought a disco from Scotland and got it all the way home to find it was a scrapper, once you leave and cross the Scotish border you have no legal comeback within English Law. Paul
  14. Hiya, I have just renewed my insurance with PBIS (Peter Best Insurance)and i think i got a great deal, and the pemium has gone down from last year, last year £240 this year £193 fully comp!!! My truck has mods which i declared 3 inch lift 33x12.5x17 wheels Disco engine Light bar A bar with spots Rear work light Straight through side exit exhaust Mud dash Tinted Black windows in rear and sides(not wind up windows) My £193 includes breakdown and recovery(including greenlane)my partner is 24 and i am 43, so my age helps but hers drags us down as she is under 25. Didn't like to put the number up, a web search will find them or pm me. Adrian Flux wouldnt touch me and two other large companies wanted £560 and £707 P.S. a mate uses them aswell he has 9 points on his licence and pays £240 he is 38 Cheers Paul
  15. As promised, results I didnt in the end change my axle as it became apparent (havin a mate dangle out of the window whilst wobbly at 50mph) that when my steering shook, so to did the wheels????? I had checked the bearings using the 6 and 9 o'clock method but nothing that was noticable, could have been the jack moving it was really hard to tell? but before i invested in the axle and a weekend under the truck i took off the hub and first hub nut, to my delight the inner hub nut could be tightened by hand at least one full turn, joy! same on the other side, hey presto no wobble, my truck is a proper gent on the road now, im back in love with it again.............until next time? Mates 110 also cured, turned out that the steering drop arm he put on to the recon box wasnt tight enough (idiot!) even i tried to tighten it, because of its location its difficult without the correct sized socket and the biggest thing we had was an adjustable, which with its bulbus head didnt help, so one shopping trip later and a new shiny 32mm socket, again presto all good. Hope this helps Paul
  16. Hiya, Just to give you an insight of what I have done so far to cure my death wobble on a 90, firstly steering damper, improvement? yes, this has tamed the wobble so it isnt so scary and you dont have to slow down, but brought it down from 60 ish down to 45? Next track rod and both ends and drag link (not sure I got the right bits named there, but its not the panhard rod) New shocks all the way round and Hawk eye laser wheel alignment only thing that is slightly out after this is the caster, which is due to a lift. Tyres and wheels are brand new and balanced, only a month old and the wobble was there before. So next thing is there is slight play in the diff and maybe the bearings in the wheels could do with changing or nipping up? Well for the work that is involved I have found a defender front axle which comes with diff and hubs, so im gonna bang that on at the weekend, hopefully it will go? A mate with a 110 and has the same parts fitted, again all new and alignment done, the only difference is his truck has normal bushes at the mo, his problem is heavyish steering and the truck just wanders wherever it wants to, he has already fitted a recon steering box, new pump and new joints on steering rack the setup we have is very similar but problems are different? He is going to fit castor corrected front arms and new poly bushes, so i'll let you know if that does anything? Paul
  17. Hiya, wondered did anyone know the size of the six bolts that go through the chassis to hold the rear gearbox mounting plates for a 1987 Landrover 90? Cheers Paul
  18. Hi all Could i get a few opinions please. What would be the best approach for replacing shocks on a defender with a 2-3 inch lift 1. extended damperss 2. lowered rear and front mounts and standard length dampers The ride in this truck is very hard and there is a lot of feedback from bumps etc on the road at the moment it has standard length shock at the rear and unknown at the front, but they are aftermarket as they are orange and black, turrets at the front look to be standard height also. Any feedback most welcome. Cheers Paul
  19. For my pennys worth I have run 31x10.5x15 BFG's AT since having the truck, recently though I changed over to General Grabber AT2......Wow, what a difference, they are a larger tyre so whether that has an influence Im not sure, they are now 33x12.5x15 but there is less road noise and the truck on-road is so much more polite in its manners. Also if your looking for new I paid £540 for 4 all balanced and ready to go on new black modular split rims with a 40mm offset which negates the need for a wheel spacer, think for once Paddocks did a good deal? Paul
  20. Hi all, Could someone confirm something or advise part number for me, just taken off a knackered 4 bolt steering box on a defender 1989, on the tie bar that comes out of the cross rod mounting bracket should there be a bush in here? cant find any reference to one in Haynes or on the web, but the hole that the bolt fits through is huge, the bolt is about 5-6mm thick and the hole is about 30mm across, surely crying out for a bush. Oh there wasnt one in there when it came off, but that means nothing really, could have been previous owner? Paul
  21. Hi again, unfortunately more news, another truck went from this area last night, it was a red 110 with a cream roof, nothing special not new or full of off road goodies only a winch and a roofrack, any one who has been following this will need to know that the number plate has been checked by the police and is completely false and not registered to anything so it may be one they have made themselves? or perhaps by a garage where they are breaking them? Paul
  22. bump, see above more info
