  1. The great thing about this forum is that the 'to and fro' of the debate sometimes distils the real essence of the question What I realise is that: I want a set of tyres that will grip on the sheet Ice that coats the very steep windy single track road I uncontrollably slide down on my way to work when its freezing. best tyre to brake on sheet ice
  2. Should have said - everything about the engine (touch wood) in fine (and most other things are not! )
  3. Winter Tyres on a Land-rover? I put the winter tyres on the VW camper that my daughter drives (It came with 2 - the previous owners used it to go Skiing in France) and was asked by a work mate if I intended to do the same to my Puma 110 CSW My immediate response was that all 4X4 tyres were winter tyres, but is that true? I realise that a thin/narrow tyre with aggressive tread will dig down through thin snow coverings to find the traction surface underneath, and a fat / wide tyre might get on top of the surface of a deep snow fall so you could travel over it (maybe) And if you wanted to float over the top you possibly wouldn't want an aggressive digging tread? but what about Ice? We do get Snow, in 2009 we got 12" overnight - the 110 was fine, but we get much more ice than snow, snow is rare, but you can get ice for weeks on end. there must be some value in winter tyres, the Americans are very fond of them - and in Germany they are a required fitment by law I have a fairly hair raising ride to work when its icy, - 4 wheel drive is great to get up the hills, but sliding down the hill on ice you have four wheel brakes - same as everyone else, only you have about 1/2 tonne of additional heavy metal! - so should I be thinking of Winter tyres, and do they make them for Defender fitments - anybody got any ideas? I used to swap road tyres for the 'Mud Campaigners' to go off-road but I got old and lazy and bought a 2nd 110 (old but with a V8) and put them on that, but because it was old - its now having new chassis (and new everything else it seems!) I certainly don't want to look out the window and have to choose between light snow tyres , deep snow tyres , Ice tyres , summer on road tyres , mud tyres , etc - and I no longer have 5 different land-rovers to put them all on!! And lastly (promise) If I was having 2 New Tyres, on my 110 CSW should they go on the front or the Back (the other pair are good at about 75% tread
  4. my 1989 110 V8 Truck cab was carted away yesterday to start the process of new Chassis, Maybe new Bulkhead, new Gearbox and clutch - the removal promoted my daughters to ask whether there was anything I wanted for Christmas towards the rebuild?? I was so surprised my mind was blank (again) Any Ideas? items below £100 and stocking fillers (below £10) Cheers
  5. SO if you have an older 110 Truckcab - Pick-up with a V8, and had already put vented discs and EBC pads on the fornt, but it still had drums on the back axle, would your advice be not to bother upgrading to discs all round?
  6. I would really appreciate your pictures if you can retrive them. Thanks
  7. The North Off Road one is now £114 – and is the kind of thing I’m looking for, though it seems that it fits a cut-down full length hard top rather than an in-fill or stretch piece for a Truck-Cab. I seem to be having some difficulty negotiating the North Off Road website I’d like to see some pictures of what it looks like fitted if anyone has any that would be brilliant cheers
  8. Thanks ejparrott I do agree the the Foley kit offers the best looking solution - but the cost is insane It is how I want to go though! Tanuki - To be honest that aspect had passed me by - Id be quite happy to make sure ot was done 'properly' but would be worried by the expense of the properly qualified insurance-assessor have you (or anyone else) had experience of this? cheers
  9. great picture Mike - thanks - Did you use a HardTop / Van roof mated to the back of a Truck cab roof - and how hard was it to do? Do you have any more pictures? cheers
  10. You may think I'm nuts but I feel the need to stretch, lengthen or extend the Truck Cab on my 110 pick-up by about 4" or 100mm. For 20 years I was very happy in my van bodied Hardtops and Truck Cab Pick-ups, then we bought my wife a 110 CSW - then a few more - now I'm a 110 CSW driver then we discovered MudRails. Now I don't drive my V8 110 Pick-Up because I don't like the cramped Hunchback doubled over driving position. One solution would be to extend the Truck Cab by 4" and move the bulkhead back to allow the seats to be relocated - A huge amount of work you say - and you are right - but if it transforms the vehicle, and I go back to using it as my daily driver then maybe its worth the effort. Does anybody have pictures - has anyone done this, anybody got any useful advice? I personally don't like the look of the crew cab / double cab - It seems the worst of both worlds, and I've looked at using a cut down hard top - but I would prefer a stretched truck cab - I realise that one you have made the effort to stretch it by as little as and 4" there is very little additional cost or effort in stretching it 12 " or more - but I'd like to keep the look of the truck cab, and not get 'greedy' and spoils the lines by stretching it too far. Cheers
  11. Thanks for all the helpful comments guys I need daylight to check this but I'm sure mine is the split case LT85 version Thanks
  12. Gearbox LT85 - rebuild or swap for R380 ? I need to get on with re-building my 1989 110 V8 Pick-up It needs a new Chassis, (Galv from Richards) and the clutch is gone - so its going to be in pieces. I have an Santana LT85 gearbox that howls in all gears except 4th / straight through. Id quite like to keep the box, but I also have a GKN Overdrive (new and in the box) and As I understand it I cant use that with the LT85? Or should I fit an R380 with lower ratios in the transfer box and use the GKN Overdrive? I had a GKN Overdrive on my 110 300 Tdi and it transformed the vehicle, especially when towing - and yes it was unreliable (still is) but I can live with that. I don't want an autobox! Cheers
  13. I think this is a very interesting idea - and well worth following-up especially if you were to use LED bulbs (to reduce the heat - 21W bulbs seem to severly reduce the the lifespan of a light fitting if left on - for example if you used a rear stop & tail fitting as a rear fog light)
  14. I agree that is a nice looking 110 - and even if it wasnt an AA van on the back - The simple thought that the tables might have been turned - gave me a wry smile!
  15. While not really a fan of DLRs I have always driven with my lights on, Scandinavian style (or at least sidelights) My 11 mile daily drive includes of single track roads, blind corners, hidden dips, and large agricultural assets (and sometimes agricultural asses) coming the other way. I think that if you go out of your way to make yourself visible, then you are reducing the likelihood of being involved in a collision. (but I'm always happy to hear views to the contrary) My last three 110 CSWs (300 Tdi. Td5 and Puma) have had their DimDip units fail so I'm considering fitting DLRs instead. I'm having trouble imagining how or where you might mount them so as not to spoil the lovely lines of my Landy, so Id be very pleased to see pictures from anyone who has done this. At the same time I’d pleased to hear the opinions of others regarding any aspects of DLRs including buying installing and wiring, or anything else relevant – some times you just don’t know what it is you don’t know! Thank you
  16. This might sound unlikely (and maybe I’m loosing it) but I cant seem to find any reasonably priced, reasonable quality, surface mounting, interior lights. Ideally they would be 12 V, LED and have a switch Any advice / links gratefully pursued
  17. Shrunken Tilt – what can I do? In the summer of endless rain (2012) I got re-married and my best man and I decided that our Series Ones would make fine Wedding Cars. However with 10 days to go, and no sign o the rain stopping, I panicked and bought a new tilt, and then panicked further and bought a set of hoops. (it being a truck cab – sort of) Naturally the moment the tilt arrived the rains stopped, (well worth-it in itself – we could cut the hay and put the tents up!) the big day dawned – all went swimmingly, and the happy coupled departed on honeymoon. No sooner were we gone, then the monsoon season resumed, we were blessed with a great group of friends and relatives who cleared-up, including some enterprising souls who had a real good go at putting the tilt over the hoop frame and fastening it all. It saved the old girl from a though soaking, as the rainy season retuned. (and all these words will convey a sence of the monotony of the rain) To the point: It seems that while being stretched over the frame and continually soaked, the tilt has shrunk. It will no longer fasten securely – it just isn’t long enough. What can I do to fix this situation? I can confirm that it is the correct Tilt for the 1955 86” Series One Thanks
  18. These sound like what I need - anybody know where to get them? my ebay search skills have deserted me cheers

  22. Well I hesitated before posting it - but it is pretty funny (I think) - and to be fair it implies she paid $160,00.00 - Not that its worth $160,00.00, elswhewre it says that Defenders are rare and havnt been made for 20 years - But the one thing they did get right: It is a very cool truck!
