  1. Yes as the guys have said a knackerd wheel bearing can wreck the stub axle as I myself found out, twice in just one week!. Good luck with the trip and the swing away idea looks great and practical too.
  2. I myself have used baby oil with good results, better than tyre/ plastic shine, but have also been told that peanut butter (smooth obviously) clean engine oil or swarfega works just as well.
  3. Mine looked ok too until I picked at it lightly then it came away very easily, to be honest I'd remove the existing seal, clean it all up and make a good new seal. I found removing the headlining and sunroof cartridges quite a simple job but I'd only want to do it once so made sure they were sealed properly. Oh by the way I found out the hard way tiger seal is a real PITA to remove from the paintwork so be careful with the excess lol!.
  4. Try these guys, http://www.glynwood.co.uk. no personal experience as of yet but two members of the club I'm in have said there was a massive saving on their previous insurers and no one else could quote anywhere near them. Quotes from club site:- (1) Is your truck insurance up soon?....Try these guys they made a massive difference to our premiums on both trucks... Shogun down from £600 to £300 Discovery down from £205 to £117 http://www.glynwood.co.uk/ (2) Had a quote £216 fully comp in my name!!! With NO ncb!! (this guy is 23-24 years old)
  5. Haynes manual says rear left, front right, rear right, front left, did a complete fluid change on mine last weekend, also looked at rave witch just said bleed brakes ie. Gave no order.
  6. Fitted the Bearmach blue HD springs along with their tuff back shocks about 6 months ago and have not noticed it leaning in any direction. I was worried that it didn't sit level like all my friends discos, seems lifted more at the rear but the 235/85/16 BF MT'S don't rub. Everyone said I got the springs mixed up I.e. Front ones on the rear because they were made to take the weight of the engine so with no weight would lift the rear too much and the front would be lower as the rear springs fitted to the front were not made to take the weight. Went over to Bearmach as I only live about 10 mins from the main depot and was assured by them and 2 other customers who said their discos were the same after fitting the kit, the Bearmach rep said that it was higher because they were HD springs meant for loads/towing and what would happen if it were level and then you loaded it up or towed something heavy?. Made sense and all 110s/90s especially MOD vehicles seem higher at the rear to me, but sorry no lean to either side on mine.
  7. I live within 10 mins of Bearmachs main depot in Caerphilly and recently went there for a cyclone breather hose for my disco 1 300tdi, I didnt know what the part was in the first instance and no matter how well I described where the pipe came from and where it went to, even sketching it out, no one behind the counter knew what I was on about. Fair enough I thought maybe it's me, so got my laptop out and showed the guys behind the desk the picture of what I wanted from the rave cd, still nothing, until as a stroke of luck the delivery driver past and asked if he could help, part reconised within seconds and a price of £46.95 + VAT quoted but they would have to order it, at this point my jaw hit the floor so I rang another local supplier (Foundry 4x4) they knew what I wanted straight away but also didn't have stock, would take a day to come in at £12.59 Inc VAT. Guess who's got my business now and Foundry 4x4 haven't paid me a penny other than in savings. Bearmach customers beware don't automatically assume they're the cheapest source of parts just because they advertise that they are and are well known suppliers.
  8. I have a '96 UK spec Disco 1 ES and this has the air con unit fitted in the same place described by James NZ, behind left dickie seat, I am also looking at the possibility of removing both the seats and unit as the compressor has been removed by a previous owner, it would free up quite a lot of the load space. Can't bilieve no one has come across this before, it must be factory spec as all the panels fit perfectly, as good as LR would have done anyway lol.
  9. I've been told that the rubber 'doughnut' on the rear prop shaft of the 300Tdi is a common failure made worse by lifting the suspension and general off road use, I've also been told that the cure is to do away with it by fitting the rear prop from a 200Tdi, is this information correct? What are your opinions/experience?
  10. I have the 3Gs hopefuly the 4 in a month or two. Where did you get the info from? Just asking as I've searched myself and can't find anything regarding the issue. If you can't post the info or link here could you PM me with it?. 60m is a lot more inaccurate than I'd hoped for, ok if theres only one track as you can't really go wrong but any lanes criss crossed with bridleways etc. could work out to be a nightmare.
  11. Currently having the same problem with my 300 Tdi Disco, no matter what we can't budge the crank bolt, tried sleaveing the wrench with a long bar resulting in a bent bar, fitted wrench against chassis and flicked the key, nothing!, let me know how you get on, or anybody else that can make a suggestion before I go and heat it up and have to change the pully and all the oil seals.
  12. I have just bought MM and found that my GPS unit is not compatible with the vista environment on my PC so am unable to sync them, I do however have an iPhone but am wondering how well MM works as a lot of areas I go I get the 'No Service' message in the top left of the display, now some people have told me that this just means I have no phone/3G signal but should still be picking up GPS signal, so I am just trying to find out if anyone has any experience of this as I dont want to waste money on the app only to find im back to reading a map as it's spending too much time with no signal.
  13. Was a sad day when me and a friend went up there on the first day it should have been open this year to find the signs showing the dates that the TRO was in force had been removed, I was always told that as long as the signs were there, regardless of what any parks authority or council told you, you could drive it as they are legal road signs telling you that it can be driven within the dates shown, now you dont ring the council every time you come across a sign for a one way street to check it really is one way do you?, the same type of signage is also posted on the Sarn Helen route. As regards to the Gap when I first drove the lane (only last year) I'd heard about all the so called damage and was expecting it to be in really bad condition but I have seen far worse, a friend managed the blown bridge section in a standard frontera and another in a fourtrack they just had AT tyres on. Ok the steps could have done with a bit of attention but were by no means impassible, last thing I heard from the club I'm in was that the council had told the guy that organises the trips that it had a one way TRO on the lane so the steps could only be driven downwards in order to lessen any damage, what would have been wrong with keeping it that way?. Just another good lane with stunning views lost to some busybodies.
  14. I love the people who can't be bothered to indicate at roundabouts but when they get to the slip road to join the motorway or trunk road they start indicating right, LIKE THERE'S ANYWHERE ELSE TO GO!.
  15. 242. Do not overtake on the left or move to a lane on your left to overtake. In congested conditions, where adjacent lanes of traffic are moving at similar speeds, traffic in left-hand lanes may sometimes be moving faster than traffic to the right. In these conditions you may keep up with the traffic in your lane even if this means passing traffic in the lane to your right. Do not weave in and out of lanes to overtake. Exactly the point I'm trying to make, if I can pass on the left quicker than the traffic on the right simply because there IS NO traffic on the left due to someone traveling in the middle lane refusing to move over or keep a decent motorway speed causing everyone to move to the right to pass doesn't that make the outside lane congested? so in keeping motorway speed in an empty left hand lane am I really doing anything wrong? Im not talking about doing 100 mph and weaving in and out of lanes here. Sadly it will probably be me who's given a tug by plod rather than the guy sat in the middle lane doing 55-60 mph overtaking nothing but White lines for mile after mile and causing afore mentioned congestion.
  16. Agreed and btw my normal/everyday car IS an Audi, always has been since I passed my test and always will be as long as I can afford them, Land rovers are for fun, but I'm still curtious to other road users who don't have or in the case of lorrys can't put the 200+ bhp to use like an Audi quattro can. As for middle lane hoggers I rightly or wrongly just undertake them, you know after seeing their behaviour, body/car language, that there's gonna be no danger in this manoeuvre as the observed vehicle has no intention of pulling over until they reach their exit which could be hundreds of miles away. Before anyone tells me this is illegal doesn't the highway code also state that the left hand lane should be used whenever possible?
  17. Had to change a stop/tail last weekend on my 300 tdi disco with air con (air con removed but all gubbins still in the load space). Had quick look in the Haynes manuel (ok for small jobs) and it said to remove the dickie seat for 'better access', well obviously I ignored this, removed the cover and got my hand in there only to find I could reach the plastic wing nut affair but due to lack of room could not turn it. Next I removed the trim above, the bit with the speaker in, only to find that although near enough the same level as said wing nut there was other stuff in the way. Re-fixed panel and speaker. Used a set of pipe grips to undo afore mentioned nut, worked due to the offset head, and pried the light cluster itself from the body using the biggest flat head screwdriver in my box. After changing the bulb and putting it all back together which took the best part of two hours, a lot of this time spent laughing at how stupidly difficult what should be an easy, even routine job had been I did begin to wonder if maybe it would have been easier to remove the dickie seat after all ;-).
  18. If it doesn't let water in and oil out it isn't a Land Rover, if it stops leaking it's empty.
  19. As a van driver (yes it's White and yes I'm a builder, but it's not mIne it's a company vehicle) lorrys and other vans flash their lights to let you know your past them and are safe to pull in and there's no need to stay in the outside lane holding the rest of the world up, I appreciate this when I'm in the van as it can be a great help, transits like landys are not the fastest mode of transport, I also appreciate it when I'm in my car and someone in a van/lorry gets flashed in so they get out of my way! Lol. It's also courteous to then indicate right then left to thank the flasher for flashing you in.
  20. Yeh Mo's bang on there, I got the snorkel and wading/breather kit thinking that going that 'bit' deeper would be fun and he's right it was until I had smelly cow mud water pouring through the air vents in the footwells and the dash vents doing a pretty good impersonation of a clothes steamer that lasted an hour or two meaning I needed to have all the windows open on top of a welsh mountain in the drizzle in the middle of December made it less entertaining than first thought, then there was the knackerd wheel bearings. Strangely I don't tend to bother too much now.
  21. As sutty, they seem like caps as they appear to be loose when you fiddle with them but they are the wheel nuts not caps that's why you can't remove them I thought the same as you when I first got my disco.
  22. I had to change a rear stop light earlier today and dropped the little plastic wing nut, when retrieving it I brushed my hand against the edge of the sound deadening which seemed damp so I lifted the corner and stuck my fingers under to find it absolutely sodden. Now I know I have a small leak from the front sunroof I intend to sort if I can in the summer (a dribble down the front screen in heavy rain) but can't imagine it causing this much damp. Could it be from the alpine windows? Or I'm thinking maybe from when I pressure wash the muck from underneath after playing in the mud, are there any rubber grommets/ plugs in the floor that may be perished or missing? If so where are they? I don't really go wading so it hasn't come in through the door seals but I know if I don't sort it the floor will turn to dust and knowing land rover quality it will be sooner rather than later lol. Thanks in advance.
  23. Yeh a few around my parts wave, flash lights etc. But you wave to some folk and they just look at you as if your from the moon, then you go on a laning trip some where you've never been before and nearly everybody waves, strange.
