  1. A standard military hoop won't fit with a hardtop, it mounts to the top of the cappings where the side panels fit. Harry
  2. Hi chaps, I'm looking for the part numbers for a few different gaskets for a 1989 90, I have the old ones but they are all knackered. I had a shifty round on the internet but my internet is useless so can't open an online parts catalogue. 1. The round gasket that fits between the the fuel filler tube and the tub 2. The foam strip that runs between the seatbox and the tub 3. The large foam seal between the heater and the plastic heater intake 4. The square foam gasket between the heater and the bulkhead Many thanks, Harry
  3. To keep costs down on my 90 I went for a combination of terrafirma springs/shocks, britpart radius arms and everything else was from the gwyn lewis kit. The set-up works really well and the back flexes a lot. The ride on the road is also much better. The apparent problems are that the shocks don't seem to damp quite as well as my mate's 90 that has OME kit, however this could be partly down to my rear springs being too stiff. Also the front end doesn't flex equally to the back, something that I am looking into at the moment. As said above, it is worth speaking to gwyn lewis, he is very knowledgable and always happy to help. Harry
  4. Dad's 90 has a 3.9 with a TD5 dash/clocks, IIRC that has a variable resistor in it. I don't know anymore than that, just that I asked the previous owner how he got the 2 to match up. Harry
  5. Glad to hear you got it back! Between my housemates and the lads next door we have 6 defenders outside, the pikeys have tried twice in the last year! They failed the first time when we saw them and chased them...the second time we caught one of them...they are yet to return We now box all of them in with modern cars overnight when possible and park them in the uni car park under cameras or lock them in the workshop if left for longer periods.
  6. Sorry just seen your Q. On my 300tdi i took a very strong bit of wire and bent the end into a hook. Feed through the top slat in the grill and pull the cable towards you, once it's close enough you can reach it with your fingers. If you pull the outer cover hard enough then it will pop it open.
  7. I presume the reason that the fob has stopped working is due to the dead vehicle battery and not any other reason? If so then I've had the same problem. There is a way to open the bonnet from outside the vehicle, once open, charge up the battery and the fob should be able to open the central locking once again. Harry
  8. Thanks for the advice everyone. I think in order to keep the bed low enough, drive-overs for the rear wheels will be required, otherwise the ramp will end up being very steep and the loaded vehicle's centre of gravity high also. Smaller wheels do make sense but if we can keep standardised parts throughout it would be preferred. The ramp can be fairly steep because it won't be used for low cars but we may look into making a ramp with a hinge in the middle, much like the HGV trailers for plant equipment. At the moment this is purely an idea we came up with in the pub, it certainly won't be started in the next couple of months! Looking around on e-blag a transit is pretty cheap but the load capacity isn't big enough. Also we quite fancied making something a bit different from the norm. Harry
  9. I've done the same to mine, very easy/cheap conversion and it makes replacement at a later date a lot more pleasant! Also it's one less spare to keep in the shed! Harry
  10. It may also be worth checking your bushes, A-frame ball joint and axle internals for wear. It is quite easy to change a prop UJ, off the top of my head you need a hammer, circlip pliers, grease, a couple of sockets to use as drifts and a punch or 2. A vice makes things a lot easier too. Last time I did one, the UJ cost me about £15, a lot cheaper than a new prop. Harry
  11. It's a shame people feel the need to do this, I used to drive the Fosse regularly and have seen people trashing the SSSI several times. The hens teeth have been dragged around the river and the banks heavily damaged. At the first ford coming from Kemble, I've even watched people winch a tree stump out of the way so they can trash a farmer's field! I'm not sure about Foxham, but Minety has been shut for over a year now http://www.minety4x4.co.uk/index.php Harry
  12. Hi all, a friend and I have come up with the ridiculous idea of trying to but a beavertail-style load bed onto a defender or disco. So far we either thought of using a 130 truckcab or taking an old discovery, cut it down to a truck cab and then extending the chassis. Is this possible (IVA etc permitting)? The only other thing we could see being a major issue would be the permitted load capacity but this could be increased by adding a 3rd axle behind the existing one in the case of the discovery. It wouldn't need to be 6x6 so it seems relatively straight forward. The vehicle would be used to carry a 90 to challenges and play days. Thanks, Harry
  13. I would go with a southdown, they are very strong, few joints that need sealing up and go through the top of the wing not the side. Harry
  14. I've had the QH ones on for 2 years now, (they were the cheapest in the local car place) despite several P&P days and plenty of road use they have worked well...just grease them every month with the props. Harry
  15. Thanks VB! On a different note, what is the legality with towing with this set-up i.e. does it need some kind of approval? Mine's a 1989 90 if it makes any difference. Harry
  16. Apologies, that will teach me to jump to conclusions! All the best to Spencer's wife, I'll wait a few weeks before I give him a ring. VB is there any chance you could stick a few photos up? Particularly how it mounts to the crossmember/chassis rails? Sadly my friend has now sold his 90 so I can't go and look at it. Harry
  17. It's not a brilliant picture but they fit on the galvanised capping where the tailgate antiluce pins attach. There should be a couple of holes the right distance apart, drill rivets out, hold part over and rivet back together. Harry
  18. http://myworld.ebay.co.uk/guardian..offroad..products/ No products listed at the moment...have they shut down? Harry
  19. A friend of mine had a guardian version on his 90, it was a very well made piece of kit and I shall probably buy the same soon. Just trying to find their website though and it seems to have disappeared
  20. I'm in the process of re-making my side exit because I wasn't happy with it first time round. Here's what we've done so far... Harry
  21. I'm very pleased with my snap-on one. New they are pretty expensive but I got mine 2nd hand in mint condition for £150 Harry
  22. I've got no silencers in my 90 but there is room to fit one if I decide to. You want piccys? Harry
  23. Is it a bush that is rattling? You may be able to drill/tap a hole and fit a grease nipple. Harry
  24. I've tried a few different paints (albeit not POR15) and i've gone back to red oxide and hammerite. As Retroanaconda said, it's easy to touch up and pretty cheap. This time I've also applied some new stuff that is waxoyl and hammerite in one pot. I've put it on over the top of the normal hammerite and it seems to be good stuff, it is very thick (you can turn the can upside down with no lid!) and it's meant to resist stone chips etc very well...It's also half the price of plain hammerite in Halfords. http://www.rimmerbros.co.uk/Item--i-RX1024 I've done a whole chassis and the underside of the tub with less than a litre Harry
